WITH STUDENTS PARTICIPATING IN VARIETIOUS SPIRITUAL ACTIVITIES INCLUDING SOCIAL MEDIA TAKEOVER AND STAFF INTERVIEWS. NATOMAS IS SOARING INTO THEIR TRANSITIONAL MODEL AND IN THE SPIRIT OF REOPENING STUDENTS ARE USING ALSO CLASS COMPETITION, BACKDROPS FOR INDIVIDUAL SELFIES, ATHLETICS CONTINUE TO GROW IN EXCITEMENT WITH COMPETITION AND FULL SWINGS FOR WOMEN'S GOLF, A THIRD HOME, FOOTBALL GAME COMING UP AND NEW SEASONS APPROACHING FOR MANY OF THE PARTS -- RESPONSIBILITIES. PANTHERS STUDENTS ARE RETURNING TO CAMPUS FOLK JUSTIFIED ON GETTING THEIR STUDENTS ENGAGED WITH A VARIETY OF CLUBS AND EVENTS.

ALL WHILE STAYING SAFE AND SOCIAL DISTANCING.

SAFETY OF ALL OF OUR I'M HERE TO RESPECTFULLY REQUEST THAT THE NATOMAS UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT SEND LETTERS HOME EVERY YEAR TO ALL PARENTS TO EDUCATE THEM ON THE NEED TO SAFELY STORE ALL FIREARMS THAT MAYBE PRESENT IN THE HOME. NEW DATA FROM THE F.B.I.'S NATIONAL INSTANT CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK SYSTEM 4.3 MILLION BACKGROUND CHECKS WERE CONDUCTED IN JANUARY, JUST THE MONTH OF JANUARY 2021.

THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF CHECKS EVER CONDUCTED IN A CALENDAR MONTH. 60% MORE THAN THE PREVIOUS JANUARY WHICH ITSELF WAS A 64% INCREASE IN GUN SALES FROM THE PREVIOUS YEAR. THAT TRANSLATED TO AN ESTIMATED 2.1 MILLION GUNS SOLD THIS PAST JANUARY.

AN INCREASE OF 80% OVER LAST YEAR.

THE RISK OF GUN SUICIDE IS PARTICULARLY HIGH RIGHT NOW DUE TO COVID-19 ISOLATION. KIDS SPENDING MORE TIME AT TIME COMBINED WITH THE SURGING GUN SALES.

THIS IS PARTICULARLY CONCERNING AS A C.D.C. REPORT FOUND THAT ONE IN 4 YOUNG PEOPLE HAVE SERIOUSLY CONSIDERED SUICIDE DURING THE PANDEMIC INCLUDING MY GRAND DAUGHTER. A TRAGIC AND DANGEROUS TREND AT A TIME WHEN THE FIREARM SUICIDE RATE HAS ALREADY INCREASED 56% FOR YOUNG PEOPLE BETWEEN THE AGES OF 10-24 YEARS OLD OVER THE LAST DECADE.

WITH 90% OF SUICIDE ATTEMPTS WITH GUNS, RESULTING IN DEATH, THE IMPORTANCE OF SECURE GUN STORAGE CAN ALSO PLAY A CRUCIAL ROLE IN PREVENTING CHILD GUN SUICIDES. NEARLY 700 CHILDREN IN THE U.S. DIED BY GUN SUICIDE EVERY YEAR AND MORE THAN 80% OF CHILD GUN SUICIDES INVOLVE A GUN BELONGING TO A FAMILY MEMBER. PLEASE PUT THIS ON AN UPCOME BOARD AGENDA. THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES AN ESTIMATED 13 MILLION HOUSE HOLDS WITH CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 18 CONTAIN AT LEAST ONE GUN. OKAY.

APPROXIMATELY 4.6 MILLION CHILDREN LIVE IN A HOUSEHOLD WITH AT LEAST ONE GUN STORED LOADED AND UNLOCKED.

EVER YEAR NEARLY 350 CHILDREN UNDER THE AGES OF 18 GAIN ACCESS TO A FIREARM AND UNATTENTIONLY SHOT THEMSELVES OR SOMEONE ELSE. OVERALL MAJORITY OF UNINTENTIONAL SHOOTINGS BY CHILDREN COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED HAD THE GUN BEEN STORED SECURELY.

A STUDY SHOWED THAT NEARLY 90% OF UNINTENTIONAL SHOOTING INJURIES AND DEATHS AMONG CHILDREN UNDER THAGES OF 18 OCCUR AT HOME. GUNS SHOULD BE STORED UNLOADED, SEPARATE FROM AMMUNITION SECURED WITH CABLE LOCKS AND LOCK BOXES. ALTHOUGH THOSE STATISTICS ILLUSTRATE WE HAVE THE POWER TO PREVENT CHILDREN FIREARM DEATHS. THEY STILL REMAIN A TRAGEDY.

AGAIN I WOULD LIKE TO REQUEST THIS BE MOVED ON TO THE AGENDA SO IT CAN BECOME A DISTRICT WIDE ENDEAVOR.

SCHOOLS UP AND DOWN WASHINGTON ARE ADOPTING A SCHOOL RESOLUTION ON SAFE STORAGE SIMILAR TO THE ONE WE E-MAILED YOU SEVERAL WEEKS AGO.

LOS ANGELES UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT DID IT A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO, THEY ARE THE LARGEST SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN THE U U.S. AND SAN DIEGO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT THE SECOND LARGEST DISTRICT IN CALIFORNIA PASSED A RESOLUTION A MONTH OR TWO AGO, AS HAVE MANY OTHER SMALLER SCHOOLS UP AND DOWN CALIFORNIA.

MAKING IT EVEN MORE IMPORTANT THAT FIREARMS HAVE STORED SECURELY. SECURE GUN STORAGE PRACTICES INCLUDING STORING HOUSEHOLD GUNS LOCKED UNLOADED OR SEPARATE FROM THE AMMUNITIONS OR ASSOCIATED WITH REDUCED RATES OF CHILD FIREARM SUICIDE.

INTERESTINGLY, WHAT SOME OF THE THINGS THAT DISTRICTS WERE DOING TO TRY TO FIX WHAT WE FOUND WITH SOME OF THE LARGER DISTRICTS WAS THEY WERE BECOMING LAND LORDS. THEY WERE BUYING UP HOUSING UNITS AND RENTING THEM OUT. PROVIDING THEM FOR THEIR STAFF AND THEY WERE DOING OTHER THINGS AT A VERY LARGE SCALE WITH CREDENTIALING PROGRAMS. RECOGNIZING WE MAY NOT BE AS BIG AS SOME OF THESE OTHER DISTRICTS, WE HAD TO BE CREATIVE AND SCALE THINGS TO WHO WE ARE IN NATOMAS. SO AS A RESULT OF THE PLANNING, WE STARTED LOOKING AT OUR NATOMAS UNIFIED GRADUATES. WE WANTED TO FIND PEOPLE WHO REFLECTED OUR COMMUNITY AND WHO BETTER THAN THOSE WHO GREW UP IN OUR SCHOOLS? ONE OF THE THINGS ABOUT IT IS WE HOPE THERE WOULD BE A MORE LIKELY INVESTMENT AND INTEREST IN THEIR PART IN GIVING BACK TO THEIR COMMUNITY THAT SUPPORTED THEM AND HELPED THEM GROW.

THE OTHER THING TO KEEP IN MIND MULTIPLE TIMES THE NEW YORK TIMES HAS IDENTIFIED US AS A SECOND MOST DIVERSE DISTRICT IN THE NATION. SO AS A REMINDER SOME OF THE INCENTIVES FOR THE PROGRAM ARE OUTLINED ABOVE.

I'M GOING TO GIVE YOU AN UPDATE ON THE PARTICIPANTS AND THE THINGS THEY'RE ABLE TO KEEFE FROM -- RECEIVE FROM THIS. WHAT WE DID IN A ONE-YEAR CREDENTIALS PROGRAM WE PAID 80 PERCENT OF THEIR TUITION IN ADDITION WE WANT TO GIVE THEM AN NUSC LAPTOP, WEEPED THEM TO BE FAMILIAR AND COMFORTABLE.

WE FIGURED THEY COULD USE THE TECHNOLOGY WHILE THEY'RE IN THE PROGRAM. IN ADDITION WE WANT TO FOSTER THE IDEA THEY WERE' CONNECTED TO COMMUNITY EVEN BEFORE THEY STEPPED FOOT AS A TEACHER ON CAMPUS, IF THEY WERE' WILLING TO RELENTS AND LIVE IN THE NATOMAS COMMUNITY WE OFFERED A RESIDENT ALLOWANCE, THERE WERE' TWO INCENTIVES WE LOOKED AT.

ONE WAS A DIVERSITY INCENTIVE AND ONE WAS FOR HARD TO FILL POSITIONS. THE DIVERSITY INCENTIVE I WANT TO BE CLEAR ABOUT THAT. WHAT THIS ENTAILS WAS IDENTIFYING CANDIDATES WHO HAD AN INTEREST IN WORKING IN OUR COMMUNITIES AS DEMONSTRATED THROUGH COURSE WORK THEY TOOK IN COLLEGE. AREAS OF STUDY, WAYS THEY WERE WORKING WITH UNDERSERVED POPULATIONS THROUGHOUT THEIR TIME IN COLLEGE AND BEYOND.

AS WELL AS BEING BILINGUAL. AND IF THEY LIVED IN A ZIP CODE SIMILAR DEMOGRAPHICALLY TO NATOMAS UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT. THAT IS HOW WE'RE LOOKING TO IDENTIFY STAFF WITH DIVERSITY.

THERE ARE SOME POSITIONS HARDER TO NIL THAN OTHERS SO WE WANTED TO ENCOURAGE PEOPLE, MAYBE PURSUE SOME OF THE HARDER TO FILL POSITIONS.

SO THESE ARE THE DOLLAR AMOUNTS ASSOCIATE AND THE TRUSTEES APPROVED ALMOST $850,000 TOWARDS THIS INITIATIVE. WE ANTICIPATE THAT HAD THAT IT WAS GOING TO TAKE US ABOUT THREE YEARS TO IMPLEMENT THE PLAN AND USE THE MONEY.

WE ESTIMATED AT THAT TIME IT WAS PROBABLY GOING TO BE ABOUT 45 PARTICIPANTS AND MAYBE ABOUT $18,000.

VERY FOR DUTY TRULY WE WERE ABLE TO GET EXTENSIVE ADVERTISING THROUGH MEDIA REACHING OUT TO US WHEN THEY HEARD WHAT THEY WERE' DOING BECAUSE OF' DIFFERENT.

WE HAVE TO BE CAREFUL AND AWARE ABOUT THOSE THINGS SO THAT IS INFORMATION THAT WE COLLECT UPON EMPLOYMENT WITH THE DISTRICT. I WANT TO SHOW SOMETHING TO YOU TO MAKE A COMPARISON AND HOPEFULLY A POINT FOR WHAT THIS PROGRAM IS DOING FOR US.

CERTIFICATED STAPH FOR THE YEAR, YOU WILL SEE BLACK OR AFRICAN AMERICAN IS I'M ROUNDING UP TO 7%, WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE DIVERSE FUTURE TEACHERS YOU SEE IT'S 22%, THREE TIMES.

YOU LOOK AT THE HIS PANIC OR LATINO FOR THE DISTRICT WE ARE AT AT 11.2%. FOR DIVERSE FUTURE TEACHERS WE'RE AT ALMOST 28%. OVER TWO TIMES.

WHAT I'M SAYING IS FOR THE 18 TEACHERS THAT HAVE ALREADY COMPLETED THE PROGRAM AND ARE NOW EMPLOYED IN OUR DISTRICT, THEY ARE REFLECTING WHAT WE ARE SEEKING TO DO WITH THE PROGRAM.

I THINK THE REALITY THAT ALSO NEEDS TO BE UNDERSTAND IS WE'VE ABOUT 640 CERTIFICATED STAFF MEMBERS.

SO WHILE WE MAY HAVE A GOOD DISTRIBUTION OF DIVERSE FUTURE TEACHERS, IN THIS CHART, IT ALSO IS GOING TO TAKE TIME. PROGRESS OVER TIME.

IT'S TRULY NOT SOMETHING THAT CAN HAPPEN OVERNIGHT BECAUSE YOU ARE WORKING WITH SMALL COHOARSE THAT HAVE TO AFFECT A VERY LARGE DENOMINATOR.

I WANTED IT TO SHARE THAT INFORMATION WITH YOU WHILE WE'RE SAYING WE BELIEVE THIS IS PROGRESS, WE'RE NOT SAYING IT'S. COMPLETE VICTORY AND WE'RE DONE. IN ADDITION I WANTED TO SHARE WITH YOU ABOUT 60% WERE NUSC GRADUATES.

HARD TO FILL POSITIONS LITTLE UNDER HALF.

AGAIN THOSE ARE VERY HARD TO FILL POSITIONS AND THERE IS NOT AS MANY PEOPLE THAT ARE GOING THROUGH THOSE CREDENTIALS PROGRAMS. THE RES ACCIDENT ALLOW ARRANGES 3/4 OF THEM CHOOSE TO LIVE IN NATOMAS OVER THE COURSE OF THEIR PROGRAM. JUST THINK ABOUT THAT.

THEY'RE IN THE GROCERY STORES, MAYBE LIVING IN THE SAME APARTMENT COMPLEX INTERACTING WITH THE STUDENTS OUTSIDE OF THE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT AND THERE IS RECOGNITION HOPEFULLY. ONE OF THE THINGS WE DISCOVERED ABOUT THE PROGRAM, REMEMBER WHEN I SAID WE'RE HOPING IT WOULD BE ABOUT 45 PARTICIPANTS AT ABOUT 18,000 EACH. WE WENT TO QUITE A FEW H.V.C.U.'S WHICH I'LL SHARE WITH YOU IN A MOMENT AND THEY ALSO WERE WORKING WITH US TO SUPPORT THOSE STUDENTS THAT WERE IN THE DIVERSE FUTURE TEACHER PROGRAM BEFORE THEY WERE HIRED. TRYING TO GIVE MORE COMMUNITY SUPPORT SO THAT THEY HAD POINTS OF CONNECTION AS THEY WERE GOING THROUGH THE PROCESS.
