>> REALLY NOTHING TONIGHT OTHER THAN WELCOME TO CAN'T WAIT FOR THE OFFICIAL INTRODUCTION OF OUR NEW HIRES AND GREAT APPRECIATION TO SOME OF OUR VETERANS MOVING INTO NEW ROLES. THANKS, GUYS.
>> ALL RIGHT. TRUSTEE HEREDIA?
>> PRESENT. I JUST HAVE TO SHARE SOMETHING REAL QUICK.
I'M GOING TO EMBARRASS HER, BUT I HOPE SHE DOESN'T GET TOO EMBARRASSED.
SO 20 YEARS AGO, I HAD THIS PHOTO HERE AND IT WAS GIVEN TO ME BY THE STUDENTS THAT I TAUGHT AT SAC STATE IN THE CREDENTIAL PROGRAM.
THIS WAS THE BMEP PROGRAM, BILINGUAL MULTICULTURAL TEACHER ED DEPARTMENT THAT I CHAIRED.
THERE'S ONE PERSON IN HERE IN THE AUDIENCE TONIGHT THAT WILL BECOME THE PRINCIPAL OF THE HEREDIA-ARRIAGA SCHOOL, AND SHE IS HERE TONIGHT TO MEET US, AND SO I'M NOT GOING TO SAY MUCH MORE BECAUSE I KNOW THERE WILL BE OTHER PEOPLE THAT ANGELA WILL PROBABLY TALK ABOUT IT.
BUT WHAT AN HONOR FOR ME TONIGHT? THIS IS JUST ONE OF THOSE MOMENTS OF WORKING IN A DISTRICT WHERE I HAVE MANY OF THE STUDENTS TEACHERS THAT HAVE WENT THROUGH THE PROGRAM, THE BILINGUAL TEACHER ED DEPARTMENT, AND JUST THE MASTER'S PROGRAMS AND WHATEVER.
OVER THE COURSE OF MY CAREER, I AM PROUD OF ALL OF THEM.
BUT I'M ESPECIALLY PROUD WHEN I HAVE THEM WHEN THEY'RE WORKING IN THE THOMAS UNIFIED, COMMITTED TO SERVING THE STUDENTS IN OUR DISTRICT.
THANK YOU, AND IT'LL BE SO GOOD TO SEE YOU UP A LITTLE BIT CLOSER LATER. THANK YOU.
>> MOVING ON TO TRUSTEE MORA IS ABSENT.
[V.d. Superintendent's Report]
[00:05:01]
>> WELL, WELCOME TO THE '24/'25 SCHOOL YEAR.
IT'S COME UP REALLY QUICKLY, BUT VERY EXCITED.
WE KICKED OFF OUR ANNUAL LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE THIS WEEK, AND SO IT WAS SO GREAT TO SEE ALL OF OUR LEADERS BACK FOCUSED ON GETTING READY FOR OUR SCHOOL YEAR.
WE'RE SO EXCITED FOR THE MEMBERS WHO ARE JOINING OUR TEAM, SO MUCH TALENT AND SO MUCH THAT THEY HAVE TO BRING TO OUR DISTRICT AND CONTRIBUTE.
WE'RE EXCITED TO INTRODUCE TODAY, AND WE KICKED OFF WITH A THEME OF TARGET SUCCESS.
WE'VE WORKED ON GOAL SETTING AND ALSO HAD A LITTLE BIT OF FUN AS WELL, AND SO WE'LL CONTINUE THAT THROUGHOUT THE WEEK.
I'M ALSO LOOKING FORWARD TO OUR BACK TO SCHOOL FAIR THAT IS THIS SATURDAY FROM 10:00 AM-12:30.
HOPEFULLY, OUR FAMILIES WILL GET AN OPPORTUNITY TO COME BY AND SEE ALL OF THE SERVICES, THERE'S FOOD, THERE'S FUN, AND ALSO THE KICKOFF OF OUR WELCOME CENTER, WHICH MR. ORR WILL TALK ABOUT IN A LITTLE BIT.
EXCITED FOR THAT. I'M JUST REALLY EXCITED TO KICK OFF YEAR 2 AND THE START OF SCHOOL ON AUGUST 8.
[VI.a. Introduction of New NUSD Administrators]
>> TIMES WHEN WE HAVE NEW HIRES AND WE'RE NOT SURE WHO THEY ARE, AND SO NOW WE GET TO SEE EVERYBODY UP CLOSE HERE.
THE INTRODUCTION OF THE NEW NUSD ADMINISTRATORS, SO I'M GOING TO INVITE ANGELA HERRERA TO THE PODIUM TO LEAD THIS INTRODUCTION.

PLEASE JOIN US AND WELCOME THEM TONIGHT.
I'LL INTRODUCE EACH ONE, HAVE THEM STANDING WITH ME AS I TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THEM, AND THEN THEY'LL RETURN TO THEIR SEAT AND WE'LL HAVE THE NEXT PERSON COME UP, AND I BELIEVE WE'RE ENDING WITH A PHOTO.

WE WANT TO WELCOME KRYSTLE TO OUR TEAM.
[APPLAUSE] NEXT, YOU MAY KNOW HER, AND YOU'VE DEFINITELY HEARD HER.
[LAUGHTER] THAT WAS IN MY OUT LOUD VOICE.
I'M JUST KIDDING. [LAUGHTER] MY KIDS ARE LASTING AT HOME RIGHT NOW.
[LAUGHTER] CASSANDRA POOLE IS OUR NEWEST PRINCIPAL AT PVS, PASO VERDE SCHOOL.
SHE CAME TO NUSD SEVERAL YEARS AGO AND ACTUALLY STARTED OUT WITH A BACKGROUND IN EARLY EDUCATION AND INSTRUCTION, AND SHE WAS A CO-TEACHING TOSA.

[APPLAUSE] LAST, DEFINITELY NOT LEAST, I'M GOING TO ASK DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENT WILL YOUNG TO COME UP AND INTRODUCE ONE OF OUR NEW LEADERS IN FACILITIES AND STRATEGIC PLANNING.

[APPLAUSE] WE WILL NOW ASK THE BOARD TO COME TO THE STAGE FOR A GROUP PHOTO OF OUR NEW ADMINISTRATORS WITH THE TRUSTEES AND SUPERINTENDENT CASTILLO.
[BACKGROUND] EXCITED TOO. [LAUGHTER]
>> THAT'S MY JOB, TAKE THE HEAT OFF.
>> FORGETTING THINGS AND MOVING AHEAD.
>> PRESIDENT HEREDIA LIKE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE CONSENT CALENDAR.
[VII. CONSENT ITEMS]
WOULD YOU CALL THE ROLL, PLEASE?
>> AYE. MOTION CARRIES FOUR, ZERO.
NOW, I AM GOING TO TURN THIS PRESENTATION OVER TO
[VIII.a. Start of Schools Report 2024-2025 Part I and Context Slides]
OUR ASSOCIATE SUPERINTENDENT DOUGLAS ORR WHO'S GOING TO TALK ABOUT PAINT. NO. [LAUGHTER]>> YEAH. I'M ACTUALLY NOT GOING TO TALK ABOUT PAINT TODAY.
>> NO, THE SCHOOL. SORRY. [LAUGHTER]
>> NORMALLY, I WOULD BE HERE TO TALK ABOUT PAINT, BUT I COULD BE TALKING ABOUT FLOORS DRAWING, BUT THAT'S DONE. THANK YOU.
REALLY HAPPY TO BE BACK TO TALK ABOUT THE START OF SCHOOLS.
FORTUNATELY, MOST OF WHAT I HAVE TO SAY IS IN THE BOARD REPORT.
SO IF YOU WANT TO KNOCK YOURSELF OUT, YOU CAN READ TO YOUR HEART'S CONTENT.
TODAY, I JUST HAVE A FEW HIGHLIGHTS TO SHARE FROM THAT REPORT.
WE ARE GOING TO SERVE APPROXIMATELY 17,500-18,000 STUDENTS IN A THOMAS THIS YEAR.
THAT INCLUDES OUR CHARTERS, PRESCHOOL, ADULT ED.
THAT'S WHAT WE THINK FOR EVERYTHING ALL IN.
BACK IN FEBRUARY, I STOOD RIGHT HERE AND WE TALKED ABOUT PROJECTIONS AND WE ARE BELOW PROJECTION CURRENTLY.
WE ARE CURRENTLY SITTING JUST ABOUT WHERE WE ENDED THE SCHOOL YEAR LAST YEAR, WHICH MEANS FROM THIS POINT ON ANY STUDENTS THAT ENROLL WILL EITHER BE REPLACING STUDENTS THAT DON'T SHOW UP OR IT WILL BE GROWTH.
THAT'S GOOD NEWS. LOOKS LIKE WE'LL BE UP. I JUST DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH YET.
WITH THAT, WE ARE LAUNCHING THE WELCOME CENTER OVER AT OUR SVC, WHICH IS A SERVICE CENTER, WHERE THE FORMER CLINIC WAS.
A LOT OF STUFFS HAPPENING OVER THERE.
IT'S PRETTY EXCITING. WE'VE GOT NEW CONCRETE GOING IN.
IT WILL BE DRYING TOMORROW IF YOU WANT TO SEE SOMETHING DRYING.
CONCRETE WILL BE DRYING, AND WE HAVE A NEW PAINT AND A WHOLE NEW PLACE FOR FAMILIES, AND THE GOAL IS FOR IT TO BE OPEN ON SATURDAY.
IT'LL BE ONE OF THOSE EXTREME MAKE OVER HOME EDITION THINGS WHERE EVERYTHING MAY NOT BE PERFECTLY RUNNING YET, BUT IT WILL INVITE PEOPLE IN TO TAKE A LOOK. WE'RE REALLY EXCITED.
ALL THE SERVICES THAT ARE LISTED THERE WILL BE THERE FOR US TO SERVE OUR COMMUNITY.
WE STILL HAVE SOME SPACE AVAILABLE, TRANSITION KINDERGARTEN.
[00:20:04]
WE HAD PLANED TO ADD ABOUT 4-5 CLASSES THIS YEAR, SO FAR WE'VE ONLY HAD TO ADD A COUPLE.WE'LL SEE KINDERGARTEN AND TK ENROLLMENT IS MUCH SLOWER THAN EXPECTED.
WE ARE ADVERTISING, DOING A LOT OF SOCIAL MEDIA.
CAFE IS OUT THERE PUMPING THE MESSAGE, BUT WE THOUGHT WITH COVID THERE WAS GOING TO BE MORE KIDS SHOWING UP BECAUSE OF THE GROUP.
THIS IS THAT AGE GROUP THAT'S THE KIDS THAT WERE BORN DURING THAT TIME, BUT AS OF RIGHT NOW, IT'S SLOWER THAN WE THOUGHT.
WE'LL SEE PROBABLY NEXT WEEK, I THINK THINGS WILL TICK UP AND WE'LL GO FROM THERE.
BUT WE ARE PREPARED IF MORE STUDENTS SHOW.
WE HAD OUR FIRST ENROLLMENT NIGHT LAST NIGHT AND WE HAVE TWO MORE COMING UP.
THEY'RE LISTED HERE FOR FAMILIES.
HAPPY TO HELP PEOPLE NEXT WEDNESDAY AND THEN AGAIN, MONDAY, THE MONDAY THAT WEEK SCHOOL STARTS.
MUCH, MUCH BETTER PLACE THAN LAST YEAR BECAUSE WE'VE REALLY DONE A LOT OF WORK TO CRACK DOWN AND MAKE SURE EVERYONE HAS THEIR IMMUNIZATIONS GOING IN THE SUMMER, TONS OF MESSAGING.
HOWEVER, AS OF MONDAY, WE STILL HAD 269 STUDENTS.
MOSTLY IT'S KINDERGARTEN AND TK, AND THEN SEVENTH GRADERS. SEVENTH GRADERS NEED THIS.
UNFORTUNATELY, THEY HAVE TO GO GET ANOTHER SHOT, THEIR TUTOR SHOT.
THAT'S WHO WE'RE CHASING DOWN RIGHT NOW AND MESSAGING FAMILIES.
BUT THE GOOD NEWS IS WE HAVE CLINICS FOR THEM.
THEY CAN COME ON SATURDAY AND WE HAVE OUR MOBILE HEALTH FAN THAT YOU GUYS HAVE INVESTED IN.
HERE'S A FLYER OUT THERE THAT WE PUT IN HERE FOR FAMILIES ABOUT WHERE THEY CAN COME TO GET SOME ASSISTANCE WITH THAT.
THEN WE ALSO HAVE OUR BACK TO SCHOOL FAIR, WHICH WE TALKED ABOUT EARLIER.
THIS SATURDAY, WE'RE GOING TO BE ROLLING OUT THE RED CARPET FOR FAMILIES, ALL KIND OF SERVICES.
IF YOU KNOW ANYBODY THAT NEEDS A JOB WORKING FOR NATOMAS UNIFIED, THEY SHOULD SHOW UP AND WE'LL HAVE ALL THE SERVICES LISTED THERE AS WELL.
REALLY HAPPY TO WORK WITH EVERYONE.
THERE'S A FREE FARMERS MARKET.
STAFFING. STAFFING IS TIME FOR A STAFFING UPDATE.
AS OF FRIDAY, THERE WERE 35 CERTIFICATED VACANCIES, AND 26 OF THOSE WERE FOR CLASSROOM POSITIONS.
HOWEVER, HR HAS BEEN DOING A LOT OF WORK AGAIN THIS WEEK.
JOB FAIR EARLIER THIS WEEK AND EVEN TODAY, DAN MENTIONED THAT WE HAD SIGNED THREE TEACHERS JUST TODAY ALONE, SO THIS NUMBER HAS DROPPED QUITE A BIT.
WE ALSO HAVE 17 CLASSIFIED POSITIONS THAT NEED TO BE FILLED.
THERE'S A LOT OF WORK HAPPENING RIGHT NOW, EVEN AS WE SPEAK TO FILL THESE POSITIONS AT THE LAST MINUTE AND A LOT OF PLANS BEING PUT INTO PLACE FOR CONTINGENCIES AND THINGS IF WE STILL HAVE VACANCIES WHEN SCHOOL STARTS.
LAST YEAR, AT THIS TIME, WE HAD 49 VACANCIES THAT WE'RE TRYING TO COMPARE.
SO YOU CAN SEE THE DIFFERENCE THERE.
THEN HERE'S AN UPDATE FOR PEOPLE.
IT'S ALSO FOR ADVERTISING OF WHAT WE HAVE AVAILABLE FOR PEOPLE TO BE HIRING.
WE DID HIRE A SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER TODAY, SO THAT'S GOOD NEWS.
BUT YOU CAN SEE THE OTHER POSITIONS THERE.
FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS, NP3 STARTS AUGUST 1ST, NEXT WEEK, AND THEN WE HAVE NATOMAS CHARTER AND WEST LAKE STARTING ON THE 7TH, AND THEN WE START THE NEXT DAY ON THE 8TH.
OUR START TIMES WE LISTED OUT HERE FOR OUR FAMILIES.
NOTHING'S CHANGED ON OUR START TIMES COMPARED TO LAST YEAR.
WE HAVE A SAFETY AND SAFE SCHOOLS UPDATE.
WE ALREADY HAVE THE UPDATED '24/'25 COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL SAFETY PLANS, WHICH INCLUDE OUR NEW MAPS THAT ARCHITECT HELPED US WITH.
WE'LL BE DOING A PRACTICE SITE EMERGENCY DRILL COMING UP HERE BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS, AND WE'LL BE DOING A LOT OF COMMUNICATION OUT USING PARENTSQUARE.
NUTRITION SERVICE WAS BUSY THIS SUMMER.
A LOT OF SUMMER MEALS, 30 SITES THROUGHOUT SACRAMENTO.
WELL, AT POP UP EVENTS, LIKE YOU SEE, THEY'RE GOING TO BE OUT AT THE FAIR ON SATURDAY AND JUST EXCITED TO GET THINGS GOING.
WE HAVE A LOT OF NEW EQUIPMENT THAT CAME THROUGH, A GRANT THAT'S GOING INTO THE SCHOOL SITES.
THAT'LL BE THERE FOR KIDS WHEN THEY RETURN.
THAT'S GOOD AS WE MOVE FORWARD BACK TO MORE OF A FULL SALAD BAR MENU THAN WE HAD BASED ON MOVING OUT OF THE PANDEMIC.
STUDENT SCHEDULES, LIKE ALWAYS, HIGH SCHOOLS, THEIR COURSE LISTS.
WE GIVE OUT STUDENTS COURSE LIST OF WHICH COURSES THEY'RE ENROLLED IN.
ACTUALLY ON THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOLS WHEN THEY GET THEIR ACTUAL SCHEDULE WITH WHICH TEACHERS, WHICH PERIODS, AND THAT'S BECAUSE COUNSELORS ARE DOING A LOT OF LAST MINUTE SCHEDULING.
WE LET KIDS KNOW WHICH CLASSES THEY'LL BE IN, NOT NECESSARILY WHICH PERIOD THE CLASS WILL BE UNTIL SCHOOL STARTS, AND THEN ELEMENTARY AND K CLASS ASSIGNMENTS ARE GOING TO BE POSTED FRIDAY AUGUST 2ND.
IT'S ALSO BEING SHARED IN THE PRINCIPAL'S LETTERS.
THOSE ARE SCHEDULED TO GO OUT ON FRIDAY, WELCOMING EVERYONE BACK AND SHARING ALL THE INFORMATION ABOUT THE EVENTS AT SCHOOLS.
OUR SCHOOL OFFICES OPEN AUGUST 1ST AT 1:00 PM AFTER THE SECRETARIES COME TO A MEETING.
WE HAVE A LOT OF UPCOMING TRAINING GOING ON FOR STAFF.
WE HAVE OUR LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE THIS WEEK, AS WAS MENTIONED.
WE HAVE OUR NEW TO NUSD ORIENTATION NEXT WEEK, AND WE HAVE A BUNCH OF NEW TEACHER INDUCTION SERIES THINGS KICKING OFF, AND WE'LL HAVE OUR PRE-SERVICE DAYS.
LEAP ACADEMIES ARE BUSTING AS IT SEEMS RIGHT.
[00:25:04]
WE'VE GOT A LOT OF PEOPLE SIGNED UP AND READY TO GO, IT WILL KICK OFF THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL.WITH THE FULL ROSTER AT EACH SITE, THERE IS ALREADY A WAIT LIST, AND ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS ARE GOING TO BE IN SHORTLY AFTER THE START OF THE SCHOOL YEAR.
THERE'S ALSO AN ADDITIONAL POSITION FOR A COORDINATOR THAT'S POSTED RIGHT NOW, WHICH WAS ON THE SHEET YOU SAW EARLIER.
IF YOU GO THERE, BIG THING FOR CAFE.
GOOD JOB CAFE. DEFINITELY CHECK THAT OUT.
RIGHT ON THE TOP, THE BIG PINK BUTTON FOR ENROLLMENT IS RIGHT THERE, YOU CAN'T MISS IT.
IF ANYBODY'S LOOKING TO ENROLL, THAT'S WHERE THEY CAN GO.
PARENTSQUARE, WE'RE ENTERING YEAR 2, SO IT'S JUST SKY'S THE LIMIT FOR PARENTSQUARE, AND WE'LL KEEP PUSHING THAT OUT. STUDENTSQUARE IS UP.
STUDENTS WILL BE UTILIZING THAT ONCE AGAIN.
WE JUST POSTED THIS HERE FOR FAMILIES.
IF THEY HAVE QUESTIONS, COMMENTS, CONCERNS, AND FOR YOU GUYS TO SHARE WITH FAMILIES FOR OUR PATH OF SUCCESSFUL COMMUNICATION.
IT'S BEEN UPDATED WITH ALL THE NEW ADMINISTRATORS THAT WE JUST TALKED ABOUT.
HERE WE HAVE IT IN DIFFERENT LANGUAGES, AND THEY CAN ALWAYS CONTACT CCS. THAT'S WHAT I HAVE.
THE REST IS IN THE BOARD REPORT.
EXCEPT FOR THE PAINT DRAWING THAT YOU JUST HAVE TO SEE.
>> I JUST WANTED TO SAY THE WEBSITE I WENT THROUGH, I SCROLLED THROUGH AND LOOKED AT THE DIFFERENT SCHOOL SITES AND WHAT WAS ON THE WEBSITE.
A LOT OF INFORMATION, IT'S LIKE YOU CAN'T MISS IT.
[LAUGHTER] I KNOW THAT WE WILL BE ASKED FOR THE INFORMATION, BUT YEAH, VERY COMPREHENSIVE INFORMATION AT THE SCHOOL SITES.
THANK YOU. YEAH, IT LOOKS GREAT.
>> YEAH, KATHY DID A GREAT JOB.
>> THEY DID A GREAT JOB, ESPECIALLY WITH EVERYTHING GOING ON.
>> THIS IS GREAT. I ASKED EVERY YEAR, I JUST GET THE INFORMATION ON THE STUDENTS THAT HAVE MEDICAL EXEMPTIONS ON THE IMMUNIZATION PART.
>> AS FAR AS WHO IS EXEMPT FROM THE THING?
>> GOT YOU. I UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU'RE SAYING.
>> THAT WAS ACTUALLY GOING TO BE MY QUESTION WITHIN THAT AMOUNT, ARE THERE MEDICAL EXEMPTIONS OR DO WE NOT KNOW YET?
>> NOT YET. THERE'S A LOT OF ENROLLMENTS WE'RE WORKING THROUGH.
SO WE WON'T KNOW THAT PROBABLY TILL AFTER SCHOOL'S GOING.
WE'RE CLEARING ALL THAT UP. A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE OUTSTANDING IMMUNIZATIONS, THEY NEED TO BRING US THEIR CLEARANCES AND ACTUALLY HAVE THEIR IMMUNIZATIONS.
THEY JUST HAVEN'T TURNED IN THE PAPERWORK, ETC.
>> YEAH, THAT'LL TAKE A WHILE TO SORT THROUGH. THANK YOU.
>> THANK YOU. [LAUGHTER] THERE WAS NO ACTION FOR THIS AGENDA ITEM.
MOVING ON TO OUR NEXT AGENDA ITEM,
[IX.a. Approve Secondary Education Specifications]
APPROVED SECONDARY EDUCATION SPECIFICATIONS, AND I'M GOING TO TURN THIS OVER. THERE WAS NOBODY.>> THANK YOU. [LAUGHTER] SOMEBODY.
>> LET'S KEEP IT MOVING. [LAUGHTER]
>> TRUSTEE GRANT, TRUSTEE DOSICK, CALL THE ROLL.
>> ARE THERE ANY PUBLIC COMMENTS THIS EVENING? I DIDN'T SEE ANY SMS THAT THAT CAME IN FRONT OF ME.
I AM GOING TO ADJOURN THIS MEETING THEN IF NOBODY ELSE HAS ANY BUSINESS BEFORE THE FLOOR.
I'M GOING TO ADJOURN THIS AT 5:43 PM. THANK YOU.
>> THANK YOU.
