[X.b. Natomas Teachers Association (NTA)]
NTA. WELCOME, MAURA.>> LEARNED THINGS IN THELAST COUPLE YEARS. GOOD EVENING .
SO FIRST NTA WOULD LIKE TO WELCOME AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH WAS STARTED THE SAME WAY I ALWAYS DO WERE HOPING WILL SEE YOUR MEETING START THIS WAY, TOO.
BUT I JUST WANT TO START TONIGHT WITH THE LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT.
[00:05:03]
RECOGNIZING AGAIN WE ARE HERE ON THE (NAME?) LAND THIS LAND WAS NEVER LEGALLY EXCEEDED SO WE WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE GENERATIONS THAT WERE HERE PRIOR TO OUR ARRIVAL.SECRETION IT'S A SIKH APPRECIATION MONTH OUR MEMBERS, COLLEAGUES, STUDENTS BRING IS SO MUCH DIVERSITY AND SO MUCH JOY IN THE CLASSROOMS IN OUR SCHOOLS.
SO HERE TONIGHT WITH ALL OF THE TEACHERS BEHIND ME ASKING THE DISTRICT TO MOVE FASTER IN ADDRESSING CONCERNS THAT WE BROUGHT TO YOU NUMEROUS TIMES OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS.
YOU TO REPEAT THINGS THAT I SAID BEFORE I'M DOING AT THIS TIME WITH THE TEACHERS WHO ARE FEELING THE DIRECT IMPACTS EVERYTHING DAY. THEY HAVE ASKED ME TO BE THEIR VOICE AND TO SHARE WITH YOU WHAT IT'S LIKE RIGHT NOW AT AGE ALAN HEIN, POTOMAC PARK, WITTER RANCH, NATOMAS HIGH SCHOOL ALL OF OUR SCHOOLS ARE IMPACTED BY OUR SHORTAGE.
I HAVE TOLD YOU BEFORE THAT WE ARE DESPERATE FOR SUBSTITUTES. WE ASK YOU MULTIPLE TIMES GOING BACK TO LAST YEAR TO RAISE THE DISTRICT'S OVERPAID TO SOMETHING COMPETITIVE IN THE REGION. WE STILL HAVE THE LOWEST SUB PAY THE IMPACT AS OTHER TEACHERS AND STUDENTS ARE GOING WITHOUT. I AM NOT SURE IF YOU ALL KNOW AND I DON'T KNOW IF THE PUBLIC KNOWS THE IMPACT BUT WE HAVE NO SUBSTITUTES IN OUR CLASSROOMS. AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL RIGHT NOW WE DON'T HAVECOVERAGE THAT MEANS THE STUDENTS ARE DIVIDED INTO OTHER CLASSROOMS . THIS ONLY PUSHES THE STUDENTS UP BUT IT MEANS THAT TEACHERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MIXED GRADE LEVELS. THE IMPACT OF THIS ON OUR STUDENTS IS VISIBLE EVERY DAY. THERE'S AN INCREASE IN NEGATIVE BEHAVIORS BECAUSE THEY ARE UNCOMFORTABLE AND UNSURE OF WHERE THEY ARE ESPECIALLY OUR YOUNGEST STUDENTS WHO ARE TAKEN OUT OF THE ROUTINES, SPLIT INTO SMALL GROUPS AND OTHER CLASSROOMS FOR THE DAY.
THERE ARE TEARS, CRYING, THERE'S ABSOLUTE DISCOMFORT FOR THOSE KIDS.
BUT IN THE SITUATION LOSES A DAY OF INSTRUCTION AND TEACHERS 'S HAVE SOMEWHERE BETWEEN 45 AND 90 MINUTES FOR THE ENTIRE WEEK HAVE TO COME UP ON THE FLIGHT WAS SOMETHING TO INTEGRATE THE STUDENTS INTO THE CLASSROOMS. SOMETIMES THEY CAN'T EVEN DO THAT WE TALKED BEFORE ABOUT MULTIPLE SPLITS WERE STUDENTS GET TO 50 OR MORE IN THE CLASSROOM. THE COMPENSATION FOR THIS SPLIT FOR THE TEACHER IS A MAJOR SUB PAY WE HAVE DIVIDED AMONG THE TEACHERS THAT ARE SHARING IT SO THAT'S 20-$40.
RIGHT NOW, SUBSTITUTE PAY AND OTHER DISTRICTS IS UP TO DOUBLE WHAT NATOMAS UNIFIED PAYS SACRAMENT OF CITY IS PAYING $335 PER DAY THERE ARE IMMEDIATE, TWIN RIVERS ARE OTHER IMMEDIATE NEIGHBOR IS --. DAY, 200, SCENE ONE IS 200, ELK GROVE IS 210 AND NATOMAS IS 165. WE LOOKED AT ALL OF THIS INFORMATION AND WHAT IT'S ALL DISTRICT OR ADVERTISING TO THE PUBLIC. OUR LONG-TERM SUBS ARE MAKING LESS THAN THE DAILY RATE THAT SUBS MAKE IN A NEIGHBORING DISTRICT.
ANOTHER PART OF THIS CONVERSATION WE HEARD NUMEROUS TIMES FROM PEOPLE IN THIS OFFICE AND PEOPLE WHO REPRESENT HIS OFFICE ON OUR SCHOOL SITES IS THAT WE HAVE BEEN TOLD THE REASON WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH SUBS IS THAT WE HAVE A CULTURE THIS DISTRICT WHERE TEACHERS ABUSING THEIR SICK LEAVE. THIS HAS BEEN TOLD TO US IN A WAY WHERE IT FEELS LIKE WE ARE THE ONES BEING BLAMED FOR THE PROBLEM. I WANT TO REMIND EVERYBODY HERE THIS IS NOT THE FAULT OF OUR EDUCATORS BUT FORCING US TO GIVE UP PREP TIME TO TAKE ON ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES DOES HAVE AN IMPACT ON OUR MENTAL HEALTH.
EXHAUSTION IS A REAL THING. WE ALREADY LIVE AND WORK WITH UNREAL EXPECTATIONS THAN THEY GUESS LIKE THE TEACHERS BY SAYING IS OUR FAULT. OUR SOLUTION WE HAVE TALKED TO OUR COLLEAGUES IN OTHER DISTRICTS WHO CAME HERE TONIGHT BECAUSEFIRST OF WHAT HIGHER PAY FOR OURSELVES. NATOMAS UNIFIED SHOULD RESPECT THEM BY PAYING THEM A RESPECTFUL TO THEIR PEERS THEY ARE ASKED TO COVER PROPS, ASKED TO WORK ALL DAY AND HAVE NO BREAKS. THEY SHOULD BE COVERED FOR THAT, AS WELL JUST AS WE ARE.
SECOND IS THAT WE WANT OUR TEACHERS NOT TO BE PULLED FOR TRAININGS AND MEETINGS WHEN SUBS ARE NOT AVAILABLE. WE KNOW THAT THE DISTRICT DIRECTOR COMING UP WITH A STRANGE HAPPENING IN THE DISTRICT OFFICE SPLITTING CLASSES WE ARE STILL GOING TO TAKE THE TEACHERS OUT. THAT'S NOT APPROPRIATE. IF WE DON'T HAVE PEOPLE TO COVER THOSE CLASSROOMS WE ARE GOING TO GIVE THEM A DAY OF EDUCATION FOR THE STUDENTS.
SO WE CAN HAVE TRAINING TAKE PLACE AT THE DISTRICT OFFICE WE WOULD LIKE THAT FOR THAT TO STOP. WE KNOW THAT THERE ARE PEOPLE IN THIS OFFICE THAT HAVE CREDENTIALS. IN WASHINGTON UNIFIED AND SAN JUAN UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT AND OAK GROVE THEY ARE CALLED ON BEFORE WE LEAVE USE TEACHERS FROM BETTER CLASSROOMS AND HAVE
[00:10:03]
BACON CLASSROOMS. OUR CONTRACT STATES THAT UNLESS THERE'S AN EMERGENCY SITUATION IN WHICH A CLASS OF STUDENTS WILL GO WITHOUT COVERAGE TEACHERS WILL NOT BE ASKED TO SUBSTITUTE MORE THANTWICE A WEEK. THIS HAS TO BE AN EMERGENCY .AN EMERGENCY IS NOT SOMETHING WE CREATE BY PULLING PEOPLE OUT AND BRING TO THE DISTRICT OFFICE. EMERGENCY IS SOMETHING WE REALLY WERE TO THE DISTRICT A LOT DURING COVID TO COVER CLASSES BECAUSE HE UNDERSTOOD TEACHERS WERE GETTING COVID THEY WERE OUT FOR 10 DAYS, THAT WAS AN EMERGENCY. WE DON'T CREATE EMERGENCIES FOR OURSELVES. WE HAVE ACTUALLY NEVER SEEN A SUPERINTENDENT "DECLARE AN EMERGENCY" WE JUST CONTINUE TO COVER THE CLASSES. IN HIGH SCHOOL THE SAME THING IS HAPPENING WERE WORKING ON THE SUBTREE SYSTEM SO THERE PULLED MULTIPLE TIMES A WEEK SO WITH THE PROPER MULTIPLE TIMES A WEEK ASKING TO BE COVERED MULTIPLE CLASSES.
IN THE END REALLY WHAT WE WANT TO DO IS HAVE TO STOPASKING FOR THIS OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
ALL OF THESE TEACHERS SHOWED UP TONIGHT BECAUSE THIS IS SO IMPORTANT FOR ALL OF US .
IT'S AFFECTING OUR STUDENTS WE FEEL LIKE IT'S TIME FOR THIS CHANGE WE SHOULD TAKE TWO YEARS TO GET IT. THANK YOU. [APPLAUSE]
[X.c. Student Board Member]

[X.d. Board Members]
>> TRUSTEE GRANT. WHAT'S GOOD EVENING, EVERYONE. I WANT TO THANK NTA LEADERSHIP FOR HOLDING ASSESSMENTS FOR THE TRUSTEES IN NOVEMBER IT TEACHES AN OPEN ATMOSPHERE AND WENT HAD SOME IN-DEPTH CONVERSATIONS WITH TEACHERS AND SOME INVALUABLE INSIGHTS INTO CULTURE AND CLIMATE AS WE TACKLE CHALLENGE WILL BE FOR TOGETHER.
THIS WEEK, WOULD LIKE TO SHARE SOMETHING I AM GRATEFUL FOR ITS SKIPPING NEXT WEEK.
I LIKE TO TELL A SMALL STORY WHEN I WAS A KID MY FATHER BECAUSE TURNED DIRT AS PUNISHMENT IF WE MOUTH OFF OR SAID SOMETHING RUDE. ONE DAY I SAID SOMETHING RUDE TO MY FATHER AND AS YOU GUESSED HE MEDIALLY SENT ME OUTSIDE TO TURN SOME DIRT.
I WAS A STRAPPING TEENAGER AND I FIGURED I WOULD FINALLY STAND UP FOR MYSELF AND SAID DAD I'M NOT TURNING DIRT ANYMORE. I ASKED HIM TO REPEAT MYSELF I GREW SOMEWHAT.
IT WAS TOO LATE TO TURN BACK AT THIS POINT AND I COMMITTED TO THE POSTURE AND SAID THAT HE HEARD WHAT I SAID. I'M SURPRISED I'M ALIVE TO TELL THE STORY.[LAUGHTER] AS WAS THE CUSTOM HE GOT UP OUT OF HIS CARE CHAIR TO CHASE ME AT THIS TIME.
THE SHORTCUT TO ESCAPE HIM BY JUMPING THE FENCE ON THE SIDE OF THE HOUSE AND SKIPPING TO A LOCAL PARK. FOR SOME STRANGE REASON I DID NOT FEEL HIS PRESENCE BEHIND ME AS I WAS RUNNING THINKING I WAS IN THE CLEAR GOING TO LEAP OVER THE FENCE AND AS I LEFT A HUGE DIRT PLOT HIT ME IN THE BACK OF THE HEAD COURTESY OF MY DAD. THE MOMENTUM OF THE DIRT SENT ME UPSIDE DOWN ON THE FENCE AND I STUCK ON THE FENCE BY MY JEANS.
FEARING MY DAD WAS COMING I SHOOK VIOLENTLY TO GET OFF THE FENCE AND RIPPED MY JEANS OFF AND THERE I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF SOUTH-CENTRAL IN DENTISTRY IN MY UNDERPANTS.
I STAYED OUTSIDE FOR A FEW HOURS IN MY UNDERPANTS WITH SHEER EMBARRASSMENT OF THE SITUATION THINKING THE ISSUE WOULD BE WATER UNDER THE BRIDGE BY THE TIME I RETURNED HOME.
WHEN I GOT HOME MY MOM SAID YOU FOUND MY JEANS BY THE SIDE OF THE FENCE AND GIVE ME A WHIPPING. AFTERWARDS MY DAD RETURNED HOME FOR LOOKING FOR ME FOR ALL THOSE HOURS AND GAVE ME A WEAPON IN A LECTURE ABOUT KEN ABILITY.
SO I'M GRATEFUL THIS THING SKIPPING FOR NEW JEANS AND THE LIFE LESSON AND BE MORE THOUGHTFUL ABOUT MY COMMUNICATION. SO AGAIN NEXT WEEK IS THANKSGIVING WEEK AND IT'S A GRANT CUSTOM WE OPEN OUR HOME TO COMMITTEE TO CELEBRATE WITH US SO IF YOU DON'T HAVE A PLACE TO CELEBRATE WITH A PAIR OF JEANS OR YOU'RE LOOKING FOR INTERESTING EXPERIENCE IN JAMAICANCUISINE WERE MORE FASCINATING STORIES LIKE THIS GREAT FAMILY WELCOMES YOU . [APPLAUSE]
>> I DON'T HAVE A REPORT JUST A FEW THINGS TO SAY. I MIGHT COME AND I'LL BRING MY OWN JEANS. SO I JUST I HAD A LOVELY MEETING WITH CEO FOUNDER MICHAEL WHO IS HERE TOMORROW I ALSO THE OPPORTUNITY ALONG WITH FELLOW TRUSTEES AND SUPERINTENDENT TO GO TO THE ROUTINE BREAKFAST TO LET US KNOW, OH, EVERYONE IS LEAVING, BY.AND I TALK, LOOK AT THAT. HAD A GOOD MEETING WITH PRINCIPAL JOHN IKE'S AND ONE.
THIRD DISTRICT PTA MIXER. WAS NICE TO SEE ALL THE NEW P PDAS MIX WITH THE OLD ONES AND IS MY GOAL TO GET APTA IN EVERY SCHOOL .
>> I WAS SLOW SO I DIDN'T CLAP AT THE END OF YOUR REPORT. IT'S ALWAYS NICE TO HEAR OTHERS REPORT ESPECIALLY OUR STUDENTS AND OUR EDUCATORS THAT REALLY HAVE THAT CHANCE TO LEARN AND TO HEAR AND TO OBVIOUSLY IT'S NICE TO SEE A FULL ROOM AND FOLKS THAT COME AND ATTEND THE MEETING. I WANTED TO HIGHLIGHT A COUPLE OF THINGS IN MY REPORT.
[00:20:06]
THE FIRST ONE IS THAT I AM REALLY LOOKING FORWARDTO ALL OUR CELEBRATIONS IN THE DIFFERENT THINGS THAT WERE RECOGNIZING OUR NATIONAL NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH, SIKH AMERICAN APPRECIATION MONTH AND OF COURSE I'D BE REMISS NOT TO DO AN EXTRA HIGHLIGHT FOR ONE OF THE SCHOOLS I LIVE REALLY CLOSE TO WHICH IS TO REVERSE ELEMENTARY AND THEY ARE BECOMING AN AVID SHOWCASE SCHOOL. ALL THE CONFETTI THAT YOU CAN PROBABLY PICTURE COMING DOWN JUST IMAGINARY CONFETTI. AND THEN SOME RECENT HIGHLANDS TO APPRECIATE SOME OF THE WORK HAPPENING IN OUR DISTRICT. OUR CONGRATS TO OUR NUTRITION SERVICES ON BEING EAT REAL CERTIFIED WHICH I THOUGHT JUST WAS AMAZING AND I THINK THE AWARDS NAME SPEAKS FOR ITSELF AND THEN CONGRATS TO THE START OF A NEW COURSE AT INTERCOM HIGH SCHOOL AND SPORTS EXERCISE ANDHEALTH SCIENCE . BECAUSE I THINK IT'S A GREAT EXAMPLE OF THE ENGAGING VARIETY OF COURSES THAT WE HAVE IN OUR DISTRICT.DEFINITELY MAKES ME PROUD TO SEE THINGS LIKE THAT. THE LAST THING I WANT TO HIGHLIGHT IS SEEN OUR DISTRICT PARTNER WITH LOCAL COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES INCLUDING ZACH ESTATE AND UC DAVIS TO RETAIN THE STUDENT TEACHERS, SOCIAL WORK INTERNS, SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGISTS, INTERNS AND SPEECH PATHOLOGY INTERNS BECAUSE I KNOW THAT THE SHORTAGE OF EDUCATION WORKERS IS AT THE FOREFRONT OF EVERYONE'S MINDS.
AND THEN SOME EVENTS I HAD A CHANCE TO ATTEND INCLUDED 1300 CAMPAIGN LAUNCH UPDATE FROM IMPROVING YOUR TOMORROW. THE AMERICAN LEAGUE FULL FESTIVAL WHICH THEY HAD A STUDENT RUN HAUNTED HOUSE AND I DIDN'T THINK IT WOULD BE TOO SCARY BUT I WAS DEFINITELY A LITTLE SCARED. YOU SHOULDN'T ASK ANYONE ELSE THAT WAS THERE BECAUSE THEY WOULD SAY I WAS A LOT SCARED. AND ONE THING I WANTED TO SHARE IN MY BOARD REPORT IS I AM THANKFUL TO HAVE BEEN ABLE TO COMMISSION THE MASTERS IN GOVERNMENT SERIES OF TRAININGS PROGRAM TO THE CALIFORNIA SCHOOL BOARD ASSOCIATION. I THINK BEING A LITTLE BIT INTO MY ROLE AS A NEW BOARD TRUSTEE I DON'T KNOW HOW LONG I'LL BE ABLE TO SAY NEW TRUSTEE AT THE COME COMING UP ON ONE YEAR NOW. BUT THAT INFORMATION IS REALLY, REALLY HELPFUL SO I AM JUST THANKFUL TO EVERYONE WHO HELPED ME BE ABLE TO GO AND LEARN ALL OF THAT.
AND ALSO, I ATTENDED THE FOSTER FAMILY NIGHT HERE AT THE EPICENTER WHICH WAS REALLY, REALLY IMPORTANT AND IMPACTFUL FOR STUDENTS BUT ALSO THEIR GUARDIANS AND JUST KNOWING ABOUT SUPPORTS THAT EXIST. AND THAT CONCLUDES MY BOARD REPORT.
>> THANK YOU. SO JUST TWO THINGS I WANT TO SHARE.
THE TRUSTEES OF ALREADY MENTIONED MY COLLEAGUES APPEAR ABOUT THE 1300 CAMPAIGN.I THINK WE HAVE A LONG HISTORY OF SUPPORTING AND WORKING WITH MAGGIE LYNCH AND OTHERS IN THE PROGRAM. BUT TO GO AND VISIT THE CLASSROOMS IN WHICH ALL THE STUDENTS COME TOGETHER AT THE END OF THE DAY FOR SUPPORT OR FOR THEIR PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT TRAINING FOR TRAININGS ALWAYS VERY MOVING. IF YOU HAVEN'T SPENT SOME TIME AFTER SCHOOL I REALLY ENCOURAGE ANYBODY IN THE AUDIENCE TO DO THAT IT'S VERY INSPIRATIONAL.
I ALWAYS WONDER ABOUT STUDENTS FOR WHOM THERE IS NOT A PROGRAM.
SUCH AS THIS PROGRAM. BECAUSE THERE ARE SO MANY KIDS LIKE THE STUDENTS WHO ARE IN THIS PROGRAM WHO MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT IT BUT ALSO JUST FOR SOME REASON ARE NOT AWARE OR CAN'T SPEND THE TIME AFTER SCHOOL FOR OTHER REASONS. SO THESE KINDS OF PROGRAMS ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO ME BECAUSE THEY SPECIFICALLY ADDRESS THE STUDENTS THAT CAN FALL THROUGH THE CRACKS. THEY ADDRESS THE STUDENTS CONTRIBUTE TO OUR NUMBERS OF DROPOUTS IN THIS COUNTRY OR CREDIT DEFICIENCY AND A WHOLE HOST OF THINGS.
I'M ALWAYS VERY APPRECIATIVE. I KNOW THAT THIS BOARD WILL ALWAYS BE COMMITTED TO BE WORKING WITH THAT PROGRAM. I DID HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY MP3 SCHOOL TO WALK THE CAMPUS AND
[00:25:03]
TO SEE WHAT THE CAMPUS IS LIKE NOW VERSUS MANY YEARS AGO WHEN MY YOUNGEST WAS ON THE CAMPUS AND THERE WERE ACTUALLY TWO SITES ON THE CAMPUS, TWO DIFFERENT SCHOOLS, TO SEE THE GROWTH OVER THE YEARS OF HOW MUCH IT'S GROWN AND JUST THE PROGRAMS. I VISITED AS MANY PROGRAMS AS I CAN AND AN HOUR AT A FAST SPEED.AS YOU ALL KNOW TRYING TO GET AS MANY AS YOU WANT TO SEE EVERYTHING IN A SCHOOL SITE BUT I THOROUGHLY ENJOYED THAT VISIT AND LOOKING FORWARD TO ADDITIONAL VISITS.
[X.e. Superintendent's Report]
>> ALL RIGHT WELL GOOD EVENING. A LOT OF THINGS HAVE HAPPENED SINCE OUR LAST BOARD MEETING ONE OF MY COMMITMENTS IS TO GET TO KNOW OUR COMMUNITY AND OUR SCHOOL SITES AND SO TO COMMUNITY THINGS. I HAD A MEET AND GREET WITH SENATOR ASHLEY SO I'M GRATEFUL TO HER AND HEAR ABOUT HER ROLE IN THE DISTRICT. I MET WITH THE AMERICAN RIVER CULTURAL PRESIDENT DOCTOR LISA WHO IS NEAR THERE SO WE HAD A NEW GREAT LUNCH AND CAUGHT UP PEOPLE HAVE TWO SONS HAVE OTHER THINGS IN COMMON SO IT WAS GREAT TO GET TO KNOW HER.
SEVERAL TRUSTEES MENTIONED THE 1300 CAMPAIGN SO I VERY MUCH ENJOYED THAT AND ACTUALLY THE SITE VISIT TO DISCOVERY HIGH SCHOOL I SAW A STUDENT AND MENTOR MEETING AND SO AS YOU MENTIONED IT WAS GREAT TO SEE THAT IN ACTION. WE HAD A QUARTERLY LEADERSHIP MEETING HERE AT THE ED CENTER IT'S A NEW THING THAT I'M STARTING SO THAT I CAN GET TO KNOW THE LEADERS IN THIS BUILDING HAS PEOPLE IN THE HALLWAYS ALL THE TIME BUT WASN'T ALWAYS GETTING A LOT OF QUALITY INTERACTIONS. SO PART OF THE PURPOSE OF THE MEETING WAS TO BRING EVERYBODY TOGETHER SO COMMUNITY AND TEAMWORK AND CONNECTEDNESS TO BUILD OR LEADERSHIP INDIVIDUALLY AND COLLECTIVELY AND TO INCREASE COMMUNICATION.
IT WAS AMAZING THAT NOT EVERYONE WAS EVEN AWARE OF ALL THE DIFFERENT THINGS THAT HAPPEN WITHIN THIS BUILDING SO IT WAS A GREAT TIME TO COLLABORATE GET ENOUGH.
I ENJOYED ATTENDING THE SECONDARY SHOWCASE ALL OF HER SECONDARY PROGRAMS AND THE CHARTERS WERE THERE SO PARENTS COULD WALK THROUGH WITH THEIR STUDENTS AND LEARN ABOUT THE DIFFERENT PROGRAMS AND OPPORTUNITIES WITHIN THE NATOMAS UNIFIED.
WE HAD OUR HELLCAT ADVISORY FIRST MEETING IT WAS A GREAT MEETING OUR PARENTS WERE SO ENGAGED THEY HAD GREAT INSIGHT ASKING LOTS OF QUESTIONS AND SO IT WAS REALLY WONDERFUL TO EXPERIENCE THAT MEETING WITH THEM. SITE VISITS I WENT TO NATOMAS HI GOT TO ATTEND THE FRESHMAN WORDS NOAH WAS TALKING ABOUT EARLIER SO IS GREAT TO SEE KIDS RECOGNIZE FOR ACADEMICS AND ATTENDANCE . DISCOVERY HIGH SEEN THE CLASSROOMS AT HERON TO PARTICIPATE IN TWO MORNING MEETINGS IN TWO DIFFERENT CLASSROOMS AND ONE OF THE MEETINGS THEY ASKED ME TO PLAY A GAME WITH THEM SO THE PRINCIPAL AND I WERE PLAYING A GAME AND THE PRINCIPAL GOT ME OUT IN THE GAME AND THE KIDS THOUGHT THAT WAS HILARIOUS . IT WAS LIKE BIG TROUBLE YOU GOT THE SUPERINTENDENT OUT IN THE GAME. SO THAT WAS FUN. I WENT TO LGA AND I GOT TO EXPRESS THEIR IN MINISTRY OF TEAM MEETING AND SEE PRINCIPAL RODRIGUEZ BACK THERE ARE REALLY APPRECIATED THAT TIME AND THE FOCUS THEY HAVE AND WHAT WAS MOST IMPRESSIVE WAS PROBABLY NOT LESS THAN 50 TIMES I HEARD WHAT IS BEST FOROUR STUDENTS ? AND THAT'S VERY INSPIRATIONAL AND GREAT FOCUS THERE. I ALSO GOT THE OPPORTUNITY TO GO TO PBS AND ATTEND A STUDENT COUNCIL MEETING AND PRESIDENT KEVIN THERE WAS AMAZING. I ALREADY TRIED TO RECRUIT HIM AS A FUTURE PRINCIPAL. HE WAS TAKING CONTROL, HE WAS TELLING THE KIDS IN THE BACK THAT THEY NEED TO FOCUS AND STAY WITH THE MEETING AND HE WAS VERY EXCITED ABOUT A RALLY WHERE HE WAS GOING TO GET PIED IN THE FACE. THAT WAS BIG AND I LATER HEARD THAT WAS A CAMPAIGN PROMISE HE HAD AND HE WAS GOING TO LIVE UP TO THAT SO THAT WAS A LOT OF FUN. KUDOS TO INTERCOM I HAD TO ATTEND ONE OF THEIR WATER POLO LAYOFF GAMES AND WHAT WAS SO IMPRESSIVE WAS THE LITERALLY LOST IN THE LAST SECOND WHICH WAS A BIG BUMMER BUT THEY WERE BEHIND BY 3-4 POINTS AT A TIME AND THEY DID NOT GIVE UP.
THEY HAD GREAT, THEY HAD DETERMINATION AND FOUR MINUTES THEY SCOREDTHREE OR FOUR GOALS THEY JUST DID WITH IT . A BEAUTIFUL FACILITY AND SOMETIMES WE LEARN JUST AS MUCH FROM OUR LOSSES AS WE DO FROM AWAITING AND I JUST REALLY COMMEND THOSE GIRLS BECAUSE THEY WERE IN IT THE WHOLE GAME AND VERY IMPRESSIVE. FOOTBALL IS STILL GOING LOOKING FORWARD TO FRIDAY AT POLSON. ATTENDED THE FAMILY NIGHT OUR FOSTER PARENTS WE HAD LOTS OF BOOTHS AND GAMES OUT HERE FOR THEFAMILIES AND KIDS PARTICIPATED IN, HAD DINNER ,
[00:30:02]
LEARNING ABOUT THE RESOURCES SO BIG KUDOS TO SHAYLA AND ANTHONY AND THE ENTIRE TEAM THAT PUT THE EVENT TOGETHER AND THEN THIS MORNING I MET WITH THE SUPERINTENDENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE. LOTS OF GREAT THINGS GOING ON AND JUST REALLY JOINED BEING HERE AND GETTING TO KNOW EVERYBODY IN THE SYSTEM AND ALL THE AMAZING THINGS.>> MOVING ON. IT'S ALWAYS GOOD WHEN YOU CLAP FOR YOURSELF, RIGHT?
[XI.a. Sikh American Awareness and Appreciation Month]
MOVING ON TO CELEBRATIONS. SO NEXT IT'S SIKH AMERICAN AWARENESS AND APPRECIATION MONTH AND WE HAVE MISSED DEIDRE POWELL. GOING TO LEAD US THROUGH THIS CELEBRATION.>> ALL RIGHT, WELL, GOOD EVENING PRESIDENT HEREDIA, TRUSTEES, SUPERINTENDENT, STAFF AND COMMUNITY. IN SUPPORT OF OUR CORE VALUE DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION WE ARE RECOGNIZING NOVEMBER AS SIKH AMERICAN AWARENESS AND APPRECIATION MONTH IN NATOMAS UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT. SOME OF THE WAYS WE ARE CELEBRATING IN THE NATOMAS UNIFIED IS WITH THE ADOPTION OF A RESOLUTION WE WILL ASKED TO APPROVE LATER IN THE MEETING FAMILY ENGAGEMENT AND EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES PROVIDED BY MOVEMENT AND ONE OF HER FAVORITES EASTON LEARN AT THE END USD TABLE. I'M GOING TO SHOW YOU WE LOOK TO MAKE SAMOSAS FROM WHATEVER FAMILIES HERE AT THE SCHOOL. I'M GOING TO PLAY THIS VIDEO THIS IS A RECIPE CARD THAT GOES ALONG WITH THE VIDEO YOU SENT OUT TO ALL OF OUR FAMILIES AND WE CAN SHARE WITH YOU. [APPLAUSE]
>> SO WE SHARE THIS VIDEO WITH OUR COMMUNITY ON SOCIAL MEDIA IN OUR NEWSLETTERS IS ALSO AVAILABLE ON OUR WEBSITE AND I HAVE SHARED PREVIOUSLY IT WILL BE INCLUDED IN THE NATOMAS UNIFIED COOKBOOK THAT WE WILL COMPLETE NEXT SPRING. IN CLOSING, WE WOULD LIKE TO RECOGNIZE OUR STUDENTS WHO ARE PART OF DIFFERENT HIGH SCHOOLS SIKH SOCIETY WAS ACTIVITIES THROUGHOUT THE MONTH TO TRY TO EDUCATE. AWARENESS TO SIKH CULTURE TO
[00:35:03]
THEIR PEERS AND SCHOOL STAFF AND WOULD LIKE TO GIVE A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL HEREIN FOR INTRODUCING US TO OUR FAMILY THAT WAS FEATURED IN OUR FEAST AND LEARN SERIES IS TRULY A PARTNERSHIP DOING THESE CULTURAL RECOGNITION FOR OUR STAFF, COMMUNITY AND STUDENTS. SO THAT CONCLUDES MY REPORT FOR SIKH AMERICAN AWARENESS AND APPRECIATION. [APPLAUSE][XI.b. National Native American Heritage Month]
>> ALL RIGHT, WHAT A LOVELY NIGHT AND IT IS MY HONOR TO ACKNOWLEDGE ANOTHER CULTURAL ADMISSION FOR OUR DISTRICT FOR NOVEMBER NATIVE AMERICAN PEERAGE MONTH.
WHILE IN NOVEMBER HAS BEEN DESIGNATED AS A MONTH TO INTENTIONALLY RECOGNIZE THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF NATIVE AMERICANS IN NATOMAS WE RECOGNIZE AND VALUE DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION ALL YEAR LONG. IN FACT, THESE ARE SOME PHOTOS OF STUDENTS ENROLLED IN OUR ETHNIC STUDIES COURSE WHERE THEY WERE ABLE TO ATTEND CALIFORNIA NATIVE AMERICAN DAY AT THE STATE CAPITAL. THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW.
WHILE THERE THEY WERE ABLE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT NATIVE AMERICAN CULTURE AND ENGAGE WITH REPRESENTATIVES FROM SOME OF THE LOCAL TRIBES. THIS MONTH, WE ALSO DID AT FEAST AND LEARN AND WE SHARE WITH OUR COMMUNITY AND NATIVE AMERICAN RECIPE THAT IS CALLED FRIED BREAD. FRIED BREAD IS NOT A TRADITIONAL NATIVE AMERICAN.
IT CAME TO ME IN THE 1860S AFTER NATIVE AMERICANS WERE FORCED TO BE RELOCATED TO LAND THAT COULD NOT SUPPORT GROWING VEGETABLES AND BEANS SO TO SURVIVE THE TRIBES USED FOODS GIVEN TO THEM BY THE US GOVERNMENT TO MAKE FRY BREAD SO WE'RE GOING TO FEATURE A DEMONSTRATION WITH ONE OF OUR FAMILIES HOW TO MAKE FRY BREAD.
>> ALL RIGHT, SO THAT WAS VERY FUN TO DO AND WE WANT TO THANK ISAAC AND HIS FAMILY FOR JUST ALWAYS BEEN A GOOD PARTNER AND HELPING US BE CULTURAL RESPONSIVE WHEN RELATED TO AMERICAN NATIVE AMERICAN CULTURE.ASTLY, I WANT TO SHARE IN SUPPORT OF LITERACY WE INTERVIEWED CHILDREN'S AUTHOR TRACY ABOUT HER BOOK HOW WELL DAY IS ABOUT A GIRL WHO WAS TO DANCE AT THE ANNUAL POWWOW DAY THE INTERVIEW IS IN THE FORM OF A PODCAST IS AVAILABLE TO
[00:40:06]
LISTEN TO HER WEBSITE APPLE PODCAST, I HEART AND SPOTIFY IN ADDITION WERE ABLE TO SECURE COPIES OF THE BOOK FOR THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS K-8 LIBRARIES.AND THIS IS MY REPORT FOR NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH.
[XI.c. Two Rivers Elementary AVID Showcase School Designation]
>> MOVING ON TO ANOTHER CELEBRATION SO THIS EVENING WE ARE REALLY PROUD TO RECOGNIZE TWO RIVERS ELECTRICAL TWO RIVERS WAS RECENTLY NAMED AND AVID SHOWCASE SCHOOL RECEIVING EXEMPLARY CERTIFICATION AND ADDED STRATEGY IMPLEMENTATION THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE SCHOOL.
OUR CHIEF ACADEMIC OFFICER ANGELA HERRERA IS HERE FOR THE CELEBRATION.
>> THANK YOU THIS HEREDIA WE ARE VERY EXCITED TO CELEBRATE AND RECOMMEND TWO RIVERS ELECTRICAL FOR THE WORK. WANT TO START ABOUT WHAT AVID ACTUALLY IS HIS CHANCE FOR ADVANCEMENT VIA INDIVIDUAL DETERMINATION. THE SYSTEM OF STRATEGIES HAS BEEN DEVELOPED TO ELIMINATE THE OPPORTUNITY GAP AND PREPARE ALL STUDENTS FOR CAREER BY TEACHING AND REINFORCING THE ACADEMIC, HIGHER LEVEL THINKING, THAT A RECORD THAT YOU CONSIDER COLLEGE STARTING AT A YOUNG AGE. AVID ONLY TWO SCHOOLS STUDENTS ARE DEVELOPING HABITS THAT NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN MIDDLE SCHOOL, HIGH SCHOOL COLLEGE AND AGE-APPROPRIATE CHALLENGING WAY. THEY LEARN ABOUT ORGANIZATIONS, STUDY SKILLS, COMMUNICATION AND SELF ADVOCACY ALL THAT REALLY ALIGNS WELL WITH OUR VISION.
SO A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY, IN MARCH 2019, A GROUP OF NUSD AT ADVENTURES THEY ATTENDED A AVID SHOWCASE ANOTHER DISTRICT. THAT INSPIRED THEY SAID I WANT THAT AT MY SCHOOL.
SO PROUD PRINCIPAL SHE DECIDED THAT SHE WAS GOING TO TAKE ON THAT WORK.
SHE KNEW THAT THE INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES AND REALLY CONSISTENT WAY ON CAMPUS WAS BOUND TO BE TRANSFORMATIONAL FOR THE STUDENTS. SO BY THE END OF THE 2019, 2020 SCHOOL YEAR SO MAKE NOTE OF THAT HEADING INTO THE PANDEMIC TWO RIVERS RECEIVED THEIR AVID CERTIFICATION SO THAT IN AND OF ITSELF WAS A REAL FEET. THE AVID CERTIFICATION PROCESS REALLY EXAMINES WHETHER OR NOT SCHOOLS ARE DOING THINGS AND DOMAIN, SYSTEMS, LEADERSHIP AND CULTURE. IT'S RIGHT IN MY EYES, I APOLOGIZE.
TWO RIVERS QUICKLY DID FULL IMPLEMENTATION AS A AVID LIMITATION DIRECTOR WANTING TO ENSURE ALL THE TEACHERS THAT TO HER OTHER AVID SCHOOLS WERE ABLE TO BE TRAINED TO IMPLEMENT THE AVID STRATEGY AT THEIR SITE SO SHE WERE BUT THOSE PRINCIPLES SO THANK YOU TRUSTEES YOU FILL THAT POSITION AS WELL AS THE ADDED SITE COORDINATORS TO PROVIDE TRAINING TO TEACHERS AT EACH OF THE OTHER SITES SO OUR AVID AND LEWIS.
VISITS CLASSROOMS AT ALL THE DISTRICTS OF THE ELECTRICALS TO MODEL DEMONSTRATION LESSONS FOR TEACHER AND CLASSROOMS I THINK IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT YOU GET TO SEE WHAT IS REALLY SHOULD LOOK LIKE. TWO RIVERS SAY QUARTERS, NOT HERE, OKAY.
ENSURES ALL TEACHERS MAKE ALL THE EVIDENCE FOR EACH INDICATOR ON THE INSTRUMENT THEY USE EVERY YEAR FORTIFICATION. SO ALL THAT BEING SAID, WE TALK ABOUT AVID SCHOOLS THAT DEMONSTRATE A MASTERY OF SCHOOLWIDE IMPLEMENTATION THEY CAN QUALIFY TO BECOME A AVID SHOWCASE SCHOOL. WHAT HAPPENS IS THESE SHOWCASE SCHOOLS THEY BECOME EXEMPLARY MODELS FOR OTHER CAMPUSES TO BE ABLE TO COME AND VISIT IF THEY'RE INTERESTED IN PURSUING MUCH LIKE WHAT HAPPENED AT TWO RIVERS. THEY HAVE TO GO THROUGH VALIDATION PROCESS AND THEY AGAIN IT'S NOT JUST THE SACRAMENTO REGION IT STAYED RIGHT IN THEORY PEOPLE CAN COME AND VISIT THE CLASSROOMS. SO WE REALLY ARE EXCITED TO CELEBRATE THE ENTIRE STAFF AT TWO RIVERS IT'S QUITE A COMPLIMENT. THINK THE THING THAT MAKES IT SO SPECIAL THERE LIKE THIS IS WHAT WE DO IT'S KIND OF OKAY IF THE TITLE BUT WHEN YOU'RE ON THE CAMPUS YOU SEE IT IN ALL THE CLASSROOMS. LOOK --EVEN THE CLASSIFIED STAFF WE TALK ABOUT THIS IN THE ADVISORY MEETING THEY UNDERSTAND WHAT AVID IS ABOUT ON THE CAMPUS. SO VERY PROUD OF THEM AND IS A COMPLIMENT.
I'M GOING TO ASK COLLEEN, BARRY, PRINCIPAL TO COME UP AND SEE IF THERE'S ANY REMARKS YOU
[00:45:03]
WOULD LIKE TO SAY.>> THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS HONOR I AM SO HAPPY TO ACCEPT ON BEHALF OF OF OUR STAFF AND OUR COMMUNITY AND TWO RIVERS. WHEN I BROUGHT AVID BACK TO OUR SCHOOL TO SAY THIS IS SOMETHING I THINK WE SHOULD DO FOR OUR STUDENTS OUR TEACHERS EMBRACED IT WHOLEHEARTEDLY AND WE ARE SO EXCITED TO LEARN MORE. MORE THAN HALF OF THEM WENT TO THE SUMMER INSTITUTE AND THEY HAVE NOT STOPPED LEARNING SENSE. THE IMPACT WE HAVE SEEN OUR STUDENTS IS REMARKABLE I AM SO PROUD OF THEM. I'M SO HAPPY WERE ABLE NOW TO SHARE OUR LOVE OF AVID WITH OTHERS BECAUSE THEY DID A THOROUGH JOB FOR BLENDING STRATEGY I WAS EXCITED TO BRING OTHER PEOPLE TO THE SCHOOL. SO THANK YOU IS REALLY SPECIAL.
>> PRESIDENT HEREDIA, WOULD YOU MIND COMING DOWN FOR A MOMENT. WE HAVE SOMETHING FOR YOU.
>> IT'S GOING IN THE FRONT OFFICE FOR EVERYBODY.
>> IN A SOLUTION OF TWO RIVERS AND ALL THE HARD WORK AND DEDICATION UNWAVERING BELIEF THAT WE CAN LEARN GIVEN THE RIGHT OPPORTUNITIES. THANK YOU.
[APPLAUSE] >> TRUSTEES, SUPERINTENDENT, IF YOU DON'T MIND COMING UP ON THE STAGE AND THE VIRTUE OF HER STAFF PLEASE COME ON UP.
WE WOULD LIKE TO TAKE A PICTURE.
>> GREAT NIGHT OF CELEBRATIONS AND WE HAVE WELL WE DON'T HAVE ANY MOTIONS TO MAKE IN THE NEXT
[XII. CONSENT ITEMS]
ITEM BUT THIS, YES WE DO, APPROVE THE CONSENT CALENDAR. MOVED BY TRUSTEE HARDEN SECOND BY TRUSTEE MORA CALL THE ROLE, PLEASE.>> GRANT, HARDEN, HEREDIA, MOR , GOMEZ.
[XIII.a. Pandemic Funds Report]
>> MOTION CARRIES 5-0. NEXT MOVING ON TO BOARD REPORT THIS IS THE REPORT WE ALL RECEIVED IN ADVANCE THE PANDEMIC FUNDS REPORT WAS POSTED ON THURSDAY THE NINTH.
>> JUST ONE QUESTION I THINK IF I READ IT CORRECT SOMEONE IN THE AREA OF 350,000 LEFT.
>> ACTUALLY, CLOSER TO A MILLION LEFT.
>> WELL, I CANNOT READ CLEARLY. FOR THE PUBLIC'S KNOWLEDGE WHAT WILL THIS BE USED FOR?
>> ANYTHING COVID RELATED OF ANY SPECIFIC FUNDS ARE TIED TO ACADEMIC RECOVERY, STAFF DEVELOPMENT, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND TECHNOLOGY. THINGS OF THAT NATURE AND THE BOARD HAS DONE A REALLY GREAT DROP ON INVESTING IN THAT SUPPORT OF THIS REPORT IS RECOMMENDING AN AMENDMENT FOR AN ACTION ITEM TONIGHT TO BUDGET ADDITIONAL DOLLARS IN
[00:50:06]
THOSE AREAS AND THE SPECIFIC AREAS. THAT INCLUDES LONG-TERM SUBSTITUTES AND COVERAGE FOR THAT LEARNING RECOVERY EFFORTS. THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND ALSO COVERING FOR ABSENCES, AS WELL.[XIV.a. Learning Recovery Emergency Block Grant Update]
>> NEXT ITEM IS ITEM 14 A LEARNING RECOVERY EMERGENCY BLOCK GRANT AND THIS HOUR CHIEF ACADEMIC OFFICER ANGELA HERRERA WILL LEAD THIS PRESENTATION.
>> BRIEF PRESENTATION TO TALK ABOUT HOW WE USED SPECIFIC MONEY NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH WHAT BILL WAS JUST TALKING ABOUT OUR LEARNING RECOVERY IS OUR EMERGENCY BLOCK GRANT.
HOW WE HAVE TRIED TO LEVERAGE THAT TO ALIGN WITH OUR VISION, VALUES AND LOOKING TO MAXIMIZE STUDENT GROWTH. AND ACHIEVEMENT. SO WHAT WE ARE TRYING TO DO TONIGHT IS TALK ABOUT THIS ONE-TIME FUNDING SOURCE THAT HAS TO BE EXPENDED BY JUNE 30 AND SHARE WHAT HAS BEEN ACCOMPLISHED AND THEN DISCUSS THE DECISION-MAKING PROCESS FOR THE ALLOCATION OF FUTURE FUNDS. TALK ABOUT HOW WE GATHER INPUT AND LOOK AT THE CYCLE CCL I FOR HOW WE MAKE DECISIONS AND THEN TALK ABOUT A TIMELINE FOR PROPOSED ACTIONS.
THERE IS NO ACTION REQUIRED OF TRUSTEES TONIGHT IS REALLY JUST INFORMATIONAL.
SO I'M GOOD TO GO WAY BACK IN TIME. AFTER COVID, WE RECOGNIZED THERE WERE SIGNIFICANT IMPACTS ON OUR STUDENTS SOCIAL, EMOTIONAL, PHYSICAL, ACADEMIC.
AND WE TALKED ABOUT AN 18 MONTH LEARNING RECOVERY PLAN WHERE WE GOT A LOT OF FEEDBACK FROM STAFF, FAMILY AND STUDENTS AND WE IDENTIFY AS WE RETURNED TO IN PERSON INSTRUCTION PHASE 18 THE CYCLES TO ASSESS WERE STUDENTS NEEDS WORK AND WE ACTUALLY FOCUSED A LOT ON THE EMOTIONAL ASPECT IN THE COMMUNITY. THEN WE MOVED INTO SUMMER LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES AND SHORTLY AFTER THAT REALLY RECOGNIZED AND WE HAD SAID THIS WE START WITH 18 MONTHS IT MIGHT TAKE US LONGER TO ADDRESS LEARNING RECOVERY NEEDS OF HER STUDENTS. AND SO, WE LEARNED SOME KEY LESSONS FROM THAT INITIAL 18 MONTH PLAN AND WE RECOGNIZED IT WAS NOT GOING TO BE BOUND BY TIME WE NEEDED TO TAKE MORE TIME A MULTIYEAR INITIATIVE THAT WE NEEDED TO SUPPORT FROM ALL OUR EDUCATIONAL PARTNERS TO HELP US MOVE FORWARD. AS PART OF THAT WORK WE TOOK THAT BUCKET OF MONEY THAT WAS AT THAT TIME ABOUT $14.6 MILLION IN RECOVERY EMERGENCY BRANDS IT HAS SINCE BEEN ADJUSTED BY ABOUT $2 MILLION REDUCED DOWN BY ABOUT $2 MILLION BUT LAST YEAR WE GET THIS APPROVED FUNDING CENTRALIZED ACTIONS AS WELL AS DECENTRALIZED SITE LEVEL ACTIONS FOR TEACHERS TO BE INNOVATIVE AND PRESENT IDEAS TO THE PRINCIPLES THEY WOULD LIKE FUNDING FOR AND GET STUDENT OUTCOMES TO DETERMINE IF THERE WERE EFFECTIVE AND SOMETHING WE COULD TAKE TO SCALE THAT A BROADER LEVEL OR IF MAYBE IT WAS BRINGING ABOUT THE OUTCOMES WE EXPECT. THAT WAS THE ACTION TAKEN LAST TIME.
WE PROVIDED UPDATES IN THE PROCESS. AND NOW HERE WE ARE WE TALK ABOUT PANDEMIC FUNDS I KNOW IF YOU CANNOT READ THIS I'LL PRINT THIS OUT FOR YOU.
WHAT IT REALLY IS TRYING TO DO IS BRING TOGETHER ALL OF THE DIFFERENT THINGS AND NATOMAS UNIFIED ENSURE THEY OVERLAP, INTERACT WITH EACH OTHER. AT THE TOP OUR FUNDING STREAMS ALL THOSE BARS ARE DIFFERENT FUNDING STREAMS AND THANK YOU, THANK YOU TO BILL AND HIS TEAM BECAUSE THEIR REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL OF THEM SO UNDERSTANDING HOW THEY CAN BE USED AND HOW WE BEST LEVERAGE THOSE FUNDS IS A SIGNIFICANT PART OF OUR WORK EVERY DAY.
AND THEN YOU LOOK AT SOME STRATEGIC PLANNING WE JUST ADOPTED NEW GOALS WERE DOING SOME PLANNING RIGHT NOW I'M ABOUT TO ENTER INTO NEW L CAMP IN NEW FACILITIES MASTER PLAN ALL OF THOSE REALLY THOUGHTFUL PLANNING TAKING PLACE. AND THEN WE LOOK AT THINGS LIKE OUR ADOPTIONS. IN RECENT YEARS THEY'VE ADOPTED SCIENCE WHEN THE PROCESS OF LOOKING AT LANGUAGE ADOPTION WE KNOW MATH ARE THE TWO CLOSEST IN CULTURE THAT WERE NEEDING TO CONSIDER FOR ADOPTION. AND THEN BELOW THAT JUST CORE WORK THAT WE ARE FOCUSED ON.
ALL OF THESE HOW DO THEY TIE TOGETHER? DO WE ASK FOR RESOURCES TO GET THE INTENDED OUTCOMES FOR STUDENTS? ON THE BACK OF THIS IS JUST A REFERENCE KIND OF A QUICK EXPLANATION OF WHAT THE FUNDING SOURCES ARE, HOW LONG WE HAVE
[00:55:02]
TO USE THEM IF THERE'S AN EXPIRATION DATE OR ONGOING AND SOME OF IT IT'S A LITTLE INTERESTING BECAUSE THE STATE DETERMINES THE LOCATIONS WE HAD A COUPLE OF ADJUSTMENTS OF FUNDING SOURCES AND ALSO KNOW WE HAVE SOME FUNDING COMING WE HAVE NOT SEEN IT YET.WE TRY TO BE THOUGHTFUL ABOUT PLANNING THAT WE CAN SPEND MONEY BEFORE WE HAVE IT.
THOSE ARE ALL THINGS WE HAVE TO TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION. WE TALKED ABOUT USING CCLI WE ARE PLANNING PROCESSES ARE WHAT WE DID TO IMPLEMENT HOW DO WE KNOW IF IT'S WORKING OR NOT AND THEN PROBABLY ADJUST ONCE WE LEARN FROM THE IMPLEMENTATION. IN EACH OF THESE AREAS THERE ARE THINGS IT'S A DIFFERENT WAY OF LOOKING AT THE MAJOR WORK IN THE DISTRICT.
YOU SEE ON THE PERMANENT OUTSIDE OF THAT MUNI ENGAGEMENT IS SOMETHING THAT REALLY ARE COMMITTED TO WORKING AT GETTING THROUGHOUT THE CCLI PROCESS AS WE ARE PLANNING, AND IMPLEMENTING TO SEE HOW IT'S GOING WE WANT TO MAKE IT A SUCCESS.
SO THIS IS AN OVERVIEW OF WHERE E HAVE THEM WITH TH. YOU CAN SEE THAT IT SHOWS AN 22-23 AT THE TOP TALK ABOUT THE BEGINNING BALANCE BEING $2.6 MILLION.
IF YOU NOTICE WHEN WE GET TO 23-24 THERE'S A STATE REVENUE ADJUSTMENT THAT'S THE ADJUSTMENT I WAS TALKING ABOUT IT'S ABOUT $2 MILLION TAKEN AWAY FROM THE OVERALL AMOUNT.
I WILL BE HONEST, MY TEAM THEY GOT A LOT OF MONEY TO SPEND AFTER TAKING AWAY THAT INITIAL ALLOCATION THE BOARD APPROVED LAST NOVEMBER AND REALIZED, WELL, WE REALLY INVESTED IN THE STAFFING IN THE NEXT COUPLE YEARS FOR OTHER POSITIONS WE REALLY TRY TO LEVERAGE THE INSTRUCTION IN THE CLASSROOM COVID PEOPLE FEEL EFFECTIVE IN THEIR ROLES.
SO WE ARE LOOKING AT THIS BUDGET AND WE IDENTIFIED PLACES.
THERE ARE ALREADY INVESTMENTS AND AFTER 24-25 WE ARE LEFT WITH 1.8 MILLION AND SO WE ARE LOOKING AT WHAT WE HAVE DONE, WORKING WITH OUR SITE PRINCIPLES TO GATHER FEEDBACK FROM THEM AND ULTIMATELY OUR MAJOR ACTIONS TIED TO OUR GOALS IS GOING TO BE FOCUSING ON IMPLEMENTING INSTRUCTIONAL FRAMEWORK. AND REALLY LOOKING AT HOW WE CAN DO THIS ACHIEVEMENT FOR ALL STUDENTS. WE WANT TO LEVERAGE THE SCHOOLS BLOCK GRANT FUNDING OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS AND REALLY TALK ABOUT ACTIONS THAT WE CAN LOOK AT TO HELP MOVE OUR STUDENTS FORWARD. SO AT THIS POINT THIS IS REALLY JUST KIND OF BRINGING BACK THE CONVERSATION HELPING TO UNDERSTAND WHERE WE ARE AT AND WHERE WE HAVE SPENT ALREADY. IN FEBRUARY, WE ANTICIPATE BRINGING BACK A REQUEST FOR BUDGET CONSIDERATION FOR HOW WE CAN SPEND SOME IF NOT ALL OF THE REMAINING FUNDS OVER THE NEXT COUPLE YEARS. REMEMBER, WE HAVE TO EXTEND THEM SPEND THEM BY 2028 SO WILL HAVE TO COME BACK AND MAKE SOME RECOMMENDATIONS FOR TRUSTEES ON BUDGET ALLOCATION.
VERY BRIEF JUST A TOUCH POINT ON WHERE WE ARE AT. ANY QUESTIONS?
>> I DO HAVE A QUESTION, ANGELA. IN A 2028, SO WE WILL DETERMINE TO DELINEATE WHICH FUNDS FOR WHICH EXPENDITURES AND I KNOW THERE ARE PARAMETERS ON EACH PLAN BUT DOES IT DO NOT ALLOW US TO MODIFY OUR PLAN ALONG THE WAY STILL? I JUST WANTED ASSURANCE.
>> I UNDERSTAND WE HAVE TO STAY WITHIN THE CONFINES OF HOW IT STIPULATED ONHOW WE SPEND .
I ALSO WANT TO MAKE SURE SOME LEEWAY THERE SHOULD DECIDE GIVEN NEW DATA GIVEN OUR PRACTICES ANOTHER TRUCK INTO ANOTHER BUDGET.
>> AND THAT'S WHY WE DIDN'T DO A PLAN FOR ALL 6 MILLION AT THE OUTSET BECAUSE WE KNEW WE NEED TO TAKE SOME THINGS AND LEARN.
>> ACTUALLY YOU ASKED THE SAME QUESTION I JUST WANT TO SEE HOW THINGS LOOK BY THE TIME WE GET THERE STUDENT WISE THE POPULATION WE DON'T KNOW WILL HAVE GOING ON BY THE THAT WAS THE ANSWER, THANK YOU.
>> THANK YOU. I DON'T THINK THERE'S ANY MORE QUESTIONS.
[XV.a. Present and Approve Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Supports and Resources for African American Student Success]
MOVING ONTO ACTION ITEMS. WAIT, I AM SORRY. ALL RIGHT, WANT TO MAKE SURE.[01:00:12]
ACTION ITEMS THE FIRST ONE IS PRESENT AND APPROVE THE DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION SUPPORTS AND RESOURCES FOR BLACK AND AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENTS SUCCESS.>> AS WE FOCUS ON THIS TOPIC OUR WORK IS GROUNDED IN OUR VISION HE WAS THE KIND OF OUR THOUGHT PROCESS FOR APPROACHING THIS CONVERSATION. AND OUR CORE VALUES.
AND WHILE ACTUALLY LOOKING AT HOW TO MAXIMIZE AN ACHIEVEMENT FOR STUDENTS I THINK YOU'RE GOING TO SEE THAT THIS DOES IT DO ALL FIVE OF THE GOALS. SO TONIGHT WE WANT TO TALK ABOUT INTENTIONAL ACTIONS THAT WE BELIEVE WILL HELP SUPPORT OUR BLACK AND AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENTS SUCCESS. I WILL TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHY THIS IN PARTICULAR.
WE WILL TALK TO DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION IN THE DISTRICT AND REALLY HOW THERE ARE SOME STRATEGIES IN PLACE AND ALSO PLANTED STRATEGIES THAT WE ARE LOOKING AT SUPPORTING FOR OUR AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENTS SUCCESS.
WHILE IT AT THE END LOOKING AT DEVELOPING A DEI AND WE HAVE A SCREENSHOT FOR THAT IN PROGRESS. SO WHY ARE BLACK AND AFRICAN AMERICANSTUDENTS SUFFERING ? I THINK WE ARE GOING TO SHARE SOME DATA TONIGHT AND I'VE SAID THIS MULTIPLE TIMES OVER THE YEARS TO THE TRUSTEES THERE ARE A LOT OF THINGS TO BE VERY PROUD OF IN THIS DISTRICT THE INVESTMENT THE COMMITMENT FROM THIS BOARD THE REGULATIONS FOR STAFF IT'S EVIDENT OVER THE LAST DECADE IN PARTICULAR THAT I CAN WITH THE DATA. WITH THAT BEING SAID I THINK IT'S OKAY TO CELEBRATE THE AREAS WHERE WE ARE SEEN SOME SUCCESS BUT ALSO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT WE ARE NOT WHERE WE NEED TO BE.HERE ARE SOME THINGS THAT NONE OF US SHOULD FEEL ARE AT THE RIGHT SPOT FOR OUR STUDENTS AND WHAT WE HAVE TO EVALUATE ON A CONSISTENT BASIS IS WHAT STUDENT GROUPS WHETHER IT'S ETHNIC OR OTHER STUDENT GROUPS CLASSIFICATONS ARE UNDERPERFORMING THEY ARE NOT PERFORMING AT THE LEVEL EXPECTED.
RIGHT NOW ONE OF THOSE GROUPS ARE BLACK AND AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENTS.
SO TONIGHT WILL HAVE A FOCUS CONVERSATION ON STRATEGIES AND ACTIONS WE ARE LOOKING AT IN THIS AREA. ONE THING I WANT TO START WITH AND YOU WILL SEE SOME DATA POINTS THAT SOME OF THESE STRATEGIES. WHEN WE DID OUR SORTING ACTIVITIES ON THE WALL WE TALKED ABOUT ALL STUDENTS GET WHAT SOME GET.
WE TARGET ALL STUDENTS ALL RELEVANT STUDENTS WE ARE TALKING ABOUT COLLEGE AND CAREER THINGS THAT'S NOT RELEVANT TO OUR ELEMENTARY STUDENTS.BUT ALL THOSE RELEVANT STUDENTS AT THAT GRADE SPAN THAT'S WHAT WE MEAN WHEN WE SAY RELEVANT STUDENTS.
THESE ARE THE THINGS THAT WE HAVE EITHER COMMITTED TO IN NATOMAS WERE THINGS THAT ARE ON THE HORIZON FOR US AND I WILL DELINEATE THOSE THAT WE BELIEVE WHILE THEY ARE GOOD FOR STUDENTS THEY ALSO ARE SUPPORT IN OUR BLACK AND AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENTS.
FOR EXAMPLE, OUR FOCUS ON USING I'M READY AND I EXCEL AS ASSESSMENT TOOLS THOSE ARE ACROSS THE DISTRICT AND THERE SOME DATA LATER THAT WE CAN ACCESS THE STUDENTS ACCESSING I READY AND I EXCEL YOU CAN SEE THE ALIGNMENT. BUT REALLY NOW STARTING TO USE THE DATA IN VERY TARGETED WAYS TO MAKE SURE STUDENTS PERCEIVE EQUITABLESUPPORT .
THE STUDENTS THAT ARE STRUGGLING MOST. IN ADDITION, CALLING OUT THE A 3G ACCESS FOR ALL STUDENTS. HOW WE DEVELOP OUR COURSES TO MAKE SURE THEY ALIGN WITH THE EXPECTATIONS. FOR STUDENTS TO BE ABLE TO CONSIDER FOR ADMISSIONS TO THOSE SCHOOLS THERE ARE CERTAIN COURSES THERE ARE REQUIRED SO THERE'S BEEN A LOT OF WORK DONE OVER THE DECADE TO MAKE SURE THAT HER STUDENTS HAVE EQUITABLE ACCESS TO THOSE COURSES. TRUSTEES YOU APPROVED THE COURSE TONIGHT TO OFFER TO STUDENTS. IN ADDITION, AS YOU LOOK AT REMOVING WHAT IS --A CONTINUED CONVERSATION WE'VE HAD OVER THE LAST FIVE YEARS OLD WE DEFINED AP SUCCESS FOR STUDENTS? OUR NUMBERS DO NOT MATCH WITH THE STATE DOES FOR PASSING AP EXAMS BUT WE ALSO HAVE REMOVED A LOT OF THE PREREQUISITES FOR STUDENTS TO ENROLL IN AP CLASSES WE HAVE A BOARD POLICY
[01:05:08]
THAT TALKS ABOUT REMOVING THOSE BARRIERS AND ALLOW STUDENTS WERE INTERESTED IN PURSUING THAT RIGOROUS COURSEWORK TO HAVE ACCESS AND PROVIDING SPORTS TO HELP THEM GET WHAT THEY WANT TO BE. SO THOSE ARE COUPLE OF EXAMPLES WE HAVE THINGS ON THE HORIZON AS WE ARE LOOKING AT OUR CALIFORNIA ACADEMY AT INTERCOM HIGH SCHOOL IS A DUAL ENROLLMENT PROGRAM. REALLY ENSURING THAT WHILE THAT IS AVAILABLE FOR ALL STUDENTS HOW ARE WE MAKING SURE THAT OUR BLACK AND AFRICAN AMERICANS TO THE POPULATION UNDERSTAND THE AXIS THEY HAVE TO THIS PROGRAM AND DO THAT INTENTIONAL OUTREACH.THERE IS A REALLY TARGETED WORK WE ARE DOING TO IMPROVE IN MATH AND THAT HAS JUST AT HAND THERE'S CERTAINLY NO DATA WE CAN TALK ABOUT RELATED TO THAT AT THIS POINT WE'LL TALK ABOUT THAT LATER DATES. THESE ARE EXAMPLES THAT WE BELIEVE IN THE SYSTEM BUT WE WANT TO TALK ABOUT SOME STRATEGIES THAT WE BELIEVE WE ARE INTENTIONAL FOCUS THAT WILL PBRING ABOUT IMPROVEMENT AND SUCCESS FOR OUR BLACK AND AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENT PPOPULATION. THESE ARE 10 STRATEGIES I WILL NOT READ THEM I WILL SHOW YOU HOW WE BELIEVE THEY FIT IN TO OUR VISION AND GOALS AND SO PUT THIS TOGETHER AND REALLY I WANT TO SPEND A LITTLE BIT OF TIME TALKING ABOUT SOME KEY ACTIONS IN KEY AREAS.
I BELIEVE YOU HAVE AND IT SAYS DRAFT I ALREADY IDENTIFIED SOMETHING THAT THE SHIFT SO THAT'S WHAT WE PUT DRAFT ON THIS IT'S SOMETHING THAT WE WANT TO FINALIZE VERY SOON AND SHARE PUBLICLY. ON OUR WEBSITE. HOW THESE FIT INTO OUR GOALS AND KEY ACTIONS. SO LET'S START WITH A LITTLE DATA IS MORE RELATED TO STUDENT ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS. JUST A LITTLE BIT OF CONTEXT YOU CAN SEE THE ENROLLMENT BY ETHNICITY FOR OUR DISTRICT OVER THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS. YOU CAN SEE THE SEVERELY CONSISTENT MAKEUP FOROUR BLACK AND AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENTS . IF YOU LOOK AT THE BREAKDOWN BETWEEN PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND CHARTER SCHOOLS YOU SEE IT'S THERE BUT INCLUDES THE CHARTER SCHOOLS BUT IT'S 70 PERCENT DISTRICT WIDE. SO AS YOU LOOK PARTICULARLY AT GOAL ONE SO HERE'S WHAT WE TALK ABOUT THE THINGS THAT MAYBE OUR SUCCESSES AND SOME AREAS THAT ARE NOT. WHEN YOU LOOK AT AT CASS YOU SEE THE BLANK AREA THAT'S 2020 AND 2021 SO PRE-AND POST-COVID WE WERE TAKING CASS ASSESSMENT. YOU CAN SEE WERE STARTING TO MAKE SOME INCREASES AND WE HAVE DROPPED BACK DOWN AND THAT GAP IS PERSISTENT FOR OUR AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENT POPULATION. WE ALSO TRIED TO LOOK THROUGH DIFFERENT LENS THAT MAYBE WERE THERE ARE SOME OPPORTUNITIES TO LEARN SO YOU SEE THERE ARE SOME SITES THAT HAVE A GREEN BOX AROUND THE NUMBER AND SOME OF THEM ALSO HAVE GOALS.
SO NINE SCHOOLS IMPROVED PERFORMANCE OF A BLACK AND AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENTS AT THEIR SCHOOL FIVE THAT ARE HIGHLIGHTED IN GREEN HAD LARGER INCREASES FOR THEIR STUDENTS THAN STUDENTS OVERALL. SO WE LOOK AT THEM AND THEN WE HAVE TO ASK OURSELVES THE QUESTIONS ABOUT WHAT DID THEY DO AT THOSE SITES WAS ANYTHING INTENTIONAL THAT WOULD ALLOW US TO LEARN AND THEN BRING TO SCALE? THESE ARE THINGS WITH THE DATA.
SAME THING FOR MATH. MATH A LITTLE HARDER I WAS TALKING TO SOMEONE TODAY AND ONE OF THE QUESTIONS THEY HAD NOBODY WOULD BE HAPPY ABOUT 11 PERCENT OF OUR STUDENTS DEMONSTRATING EFFICIENCY IN MATH. ONE OF THE INTERESTING THINGS IS THE ARTISTIC ONCE IN HIGH SCHOOL AND THEN THE CONTENT THEY ARE TESTED IS MATH THREE AND IT DOESN'T QUITE MATCH UP WITH WHERE STUDENTS MAY BE AT MATH TRAJECTORY IN THE COURSE OF HIGH SCHOOL AS WELL AS THE NUMBER OF YEARS OF MATH THAT ARE REQUIRED FOR GRADUATION VERSUS THE CSC YOU ADMISSIONS. THERE ARE SOME THINGS WE ARE LEARNING ABOUT HOW ABOUT HOW STUDENTS CAN BE PREPARED FOR THAT LEVEL OF MATH IS NOT TAKING THAT COURSE.
ONE OF THE THINGS WE TALKED ABOUT THE PRIOR AREA ESTATE ASSESSMENT IS COURSE EXAMS. WHATEVER COURSE HERE IN THE WAS THE ASSESSMENT AT THE BEGINNING OF YEAR AND IT MATCHED UP.
ONETHING WE HAVE TO LEARN IN THE PROCESS .
>> ONE MORE SLIDE. SO THE IMPROVEMENTS HERE IN THE GREEN AREAS ARE THESE SAMPLES REPRESENTATIVE IN THE SENSE THAT MAYBE IT'S NOT ONE OR TWO STUDENTS LIKE ESSENTIAL LIMIT
[01:10:05]
THERE LIKE 30 STUDENTS I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WERE NOT DRAWING CONCLUSIONS FROM TWO STUDENTS VERSUS A LOT OF STUDENTS AS THIS NUMBER IS MOVING BECAUSE THERE'S LIKE MIKE THE ONE BLACK STUDENT AND THEN OTHER SUITS ARE REALLY THERE.>> I WOULD SAY IF IT IS UNDER A CERTAIN NUMBER OF STUDENTS THAT IS NOT RECORDED.
>> FOR CONFIDENTIALITY PURPOSE .
>> IT HAS TO BE OVER AND AS PART OF THE WORK WE HAVE TO DO IS WAIT TO DIG IN THEN AND LEARN FROM THOSE STUDENTS HOW MANY STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE GROWTH.
THIS IS ALSO FOR SEVERAL YEARS. IT MAY NOT BE THESAME EXACT STUDENTS .
SO THE MATH WE HAVE THE SAME TYPE OF CONVERSATION AROUND HOW MANY SCHOOLS IMPROVED PERFORMANCE AND OF THE STUDENT GROUP AND THEN HOW MANY SCHOOLS HAVE A LARGER INCREASE OF BLACK AND AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENTS WHEN COMPARED TO OTHER SCHOOLS OF THAT SAME TIME PERIOD.
AGAIN, WHEN I SAY GROWTH SORRY SOMETIMES IT IS LESS DECLINE IN A FEWCASES YOU CAN SEE THERE'S LESS DECLINE . FOR ALL STUDENTS THEY MAY HAVE DECLINED BUT WERE LOOKING AT THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENT DATA FOR THE IMPROVED. THIS IS JUST A STARTINGPLACE FOR US TO THEN START ASKING QUESTIONS .SOMETHING TO BE PROUD OF.
WHEN WE TALK ABOUT HOW WE DEVELOP OUR COURSES IN OUR SEQUENCING FOR STUDENTS OUR AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENT POPULATION IN 2022 THESE ARE THE OFFICIAL GRADUATION OUTCOMES OUTPERFORMED THE ALL STUDENT GROUP. I WANTED TO CALL OUT NATOMAS HIGH SCHOOL SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE I THINK IT'S A BIT OF A MISNOMER WHEN YOU SEE A LOWER GRADUATION RATE AS YOU ARE WELL AWARE THEY HAD THE ADULT TRANSITIONS PROGRAM SO STUDENTS MODERATE, SEVERE DISABILITIES THEY WILL SOMETIMES GRADUALLY WITH WHAT'S CALLED A CERTIFICATE THEY MATRICULATE INTO THE TRANSITIONS PROGRAM SO IF YOU TAKE THAT INTO CONSIDERATION IT WOULD'VE IMPACTED THEIR PERCENTAGE OF THE GRADUATION RATE BY FIVE PERCENT IT WOULD'VE BEEN FIVE PERCENT HIGHER. IN ADDITION, BECAUSE OF THE PROGRAM AND ARE STUDENTS AT NATOMAS HIGH THEY REALLY RECENTLY JUST INTRODUCING SOME OF THE CLASSROOMS AND NATOMAS HIGH SCHOOL SO WE ANTICIPATE OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS GRADUATION RATES WE MIGHT SEE SOME ADJUSTMENT ON THAT BECAUSE INTRODUCING THIS PROGRAM.
WE WANT TO LOOK AT GRADUATION RATES WE WENT BACK TO ABOUT 2012 FOR OUR CORE FOR MAJOR ETHNIC GROUPS. SEEING HOW THEY PERFORMED. WHEN YOU LOOK AT OUR DROPOUT RATES AT THE BOTTOM THE DATA AROUND THAT PARTICULAR DROPOUT RATES FOR BLACK AND AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENTS BETWEEN 2011 AND 2016 USING THE SAME MANAGEMENT IT DROPPED ABOUT 2.6 PERCENT . 2.6 PERCENT FEWER BLACK AND AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENTS DROPPED OUT OF SCHOOL AND IN 2016 THAN IN 2011. NOW WERE SITTING IN 2022 AT ONE PERCENT IS A DIFFERENT CALCULATION SO IT'S NOT APPLES TO APPLES FROM 2016 TO 2022.
ANOTHER NOTEWORTHY THING FOR THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA THE DROPOUT RATE FOR AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENTS IS 14 PERCENT.
>> COULD YOU ELABORATE ON THE STATE CALCULATION. THIS IS A TIME FOR ME FOR TOUGH CONVERSATIONS WE NEED TO HAVE. WE CAN CATCH UP LATER ON IT BUT WHAT DOES THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA TO. AND THEN SHIP THE STANDARD TO WORK IN A LOWER THE STANDARDS, I'M GOING TO BE HONEST I'VE SEEN THE SYSTEM TO THE 2016-2017 IT'S EVER BEEN INSULTED. I FEEL INSULTED AS A BLACK MAN AND MY DAUGHTER WHEN WE SAY BLACK STUDENTS CAN'T REACH THESE GOALS AND WORK IN THE LOWER THE STANDARDS IT JUST TO MAKE IT LOOK GOOD ON PAPER. I WAS VERY CURIOUS AT SOME POINT WITH THAT STATE THAT SHE READS THE LOWER DROPOUT RATE IS A MOVE. BECAUSE STATE LEGISLATURE MOVED OR IS IT AROUND THE PROGRAMS?
[01:15:04]
>> IF YOU LOOK AT ARE A THROUGH G RATE THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA THE EIGHTH THROUGH G RATE IS 41 PERCENT FOR OTHER STUDENTS IT'S HIGHER THEY ALL STUDENT NUMBER AS WE LOOK WE ALSO LOOK OVER TIME BECAUSE WE UNDERSTAND THE GAPS BUT WE ALSO HAVE SEEN THAT FOR BLACK AND AFRICAN AMERICANS STUDENTS THE GAP OVER HERE IN 2022 IS LESS THAN IT WAS IN 2012.
I THINK IT WENT FROM 38 TO -PERCENT. THIS IS MORE VISUAL WE ARE TALKING. YOU CAN LOOK AT APA AND IT ENROLLMENT THAT SOMETHING WE ARE MONITORING TO ENSURE THAT AS WE LOOK AT OUR STUDENT GROUPS THAT THEY'RE GOING TO PAY ATTENTION TO ANY OF THOSE AND ANY DECLINE IN OUR BLACK AND AFRICAN-AMERICAN YOU BUT THE DIFFERENT PROGRAMS WE OFFER THE DISTRICT AND LOOK AT THE DIFFERENT STUDENT GROUPS THAT ARE IN THOSE THAT'S PART OF OUR POLICY AND 100. I'M JUST GOING TO HIGHLIGHT A COUPLE ACTIONS AND THEN I WILL FOCUS MORE ON THIS LATER INSTEAD OF ALL THIS.
YOU CAN SEE THEIR SEMI-ITALICIZED THOSE ARE THE THINGS THAT ARE IN DEVELOPMENT SOME OF THEM HAVE VERY CONCRETE DATES OTHERS WE ARE IN CONVERSATION AND I DON'T FEEL COMFORTABLE PUTTING A DATE YET. SO I WOULD LIKE TO HIGHLIGHT A FEW THINGS VERY EXCITED THAT NATOMAS HIGH SCHOOL IS PILOTING AP AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDIES THIS YEAR THEY HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO THAT SO WERE GOING TO HAVE A CHANCE OF THE SHIP TO LEARN FROM STUDENTS BACK ON THE COURSE HOW THEY FEEL CONNECTED TO THE COURSE AND HOW WE MOVE FORWARD WITH THAT. UM, SHE COULD ASK SUPERINTENDENT TO TALK ABOUT A FEW THINGS SOME OF US MATERIALS THAT WERE GONNA START TO SHARE OUT FOR THE WINTER SESSION AND THEN A NEW SET OF WORK SOLD MEDIA PROGRAM PILOT THAT WE ARE GOING TO BE ENGAGED IN.
>> GOOD EVENING. LUCKY TO BE ABLE TO SHARE OUR WORK.
FIRST I WANT TO TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT TCM IT'S A COMPANY CALLED TEACHER CREATED MATERIALS AS YOU KNOW WE BEEN WORKING WITH DOCTOR HOLLY LAST YEAR AND AND A HALF SO DOCTOR HOLLY WHAT THEY DID WITH TCM IS CREATED CURATED A SET OF MATERIALS FOR STUDENTS AND THE THEY HAVE VERY DETAILED LITERACY PLANS FOR TEACHERS. WHAT'S REALLY EXCITING ABOUT THE WAY DOCTOR HOLLY CURATED THE MATERIALS THERE, THE MATERIALS HAVE BOOKS AND READINGS NARRATIVE AND INFORMATIONAL FULL MODELS SOME EXPERTS EXCERPTS THEY'RE NOT ONLY ABOUT STUDENT GROUPS THAT ARE REPRESENTED IN A NATOMAS BUT ALSO BY AUTHORS THAT REPRESENT THE COMMUNITY OF NATOMAS. SO ONE BOOK I THINK IS PARTICULARLY COMPELLING IN HIS CURATED IS A BOOK YOU MIGHT BE FAMILIAR WITH IT'S A SERIES BY ALVAREZ AS ABOUT AND LOLA IS ABOUT A FAMILY FROM THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC WHO HAS SETTLED IN NEW YORK CITY. THE FAMILY THE MOTHER AND THE FAMILY GETS THIS AMAZING JOB OFFER AND SO YOU HAVE TWO CHILDREN IN THE FAMILY WHO LIVED IN A VERY COHESIVE NEIGHBORHOOD IN NEW YORK CITY SURROUNDED BY PEOPLE FROM THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC IN THIS SPOKE THE SAME LANGUAGE AND CELEBRATED IN THE SAME WAYS AND EIGHT SIMILAR FOOD AND THEN HIS FAMILY IS OPERATIVE TO VERMONT AND HAS A VERY DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE.
THE REASON I HIGHLIGHT THIS TEXT IN PARTICULAR IS BECAUSE IN THE COMMUNITY WE HAVE OUR OWN FAMILIES WHO EXPERIENCE THOSE KINDS OF MOVES THOSE NEW EXPERIENCES AND THAT KIND OF ISOLATION. SO NOT ONLY IS THE AUTHOR BUT THE STORY CAPTURES THOSE EXPERIENCES THAT RELATE TO OUR OWN SORE STUDENTS GET TO READ AUTHORS AND STORIES THAT ARE ABOUT THINGS THAT THEY CAN RELATE TO.HIS IS WORK WE STARTED LAST YEAR THE APPROVAL
[01:20:02]
OF THESE KINDS OF RESOURCES THAT ARE NOW COMING TO FRUITION.SO WHAT (NAME?) HAS DONE HE WILL HAVE A BOOK AND THAT HE HAS A COMPLETE SET OF MATERIALS INSIDE THAT THE TEACHER GETS, THE STUDENTS GET AND THEN THE WAY WE ARE BUNDLING THE MATERIALS FAMILIES WILL ALSO GET MATERIALS FOR HOW TO USE THE LITERATURE AT HOME BECAUSE THE WAY WE ARE PILOTING THIS STUDENTS WILL GET BOOK BUNDLES THEY WILL GET TO KEEP IT HOME RELATED TO THESE MATERIALS. IN THE WINTER INTERCESSION WERE DOING OVER THE WINTER RECESS WE WILL HAVE IN OUR OWN TEACHERS TRAINED IN THESE MATERIALS THAT WILL BE DOING LITERACY INTERVENTION FOR 2 TO 3 HOURS A DAY AND THEN THE STUDENT WILL GET TO PARTICIPATE IN RELATED DEVELOPMENTAL PLATE, ENRICHMEN , RELATED TO THE BOOKS. WE ARE VERY EXCITED WE HAVE TCM STARTING WINTER SESSION AND THEN ALSO PILOTING THE MATERIALS AND CLASSROOMS SO WERE LOOKING FOR TO THAT. AND THEN AM VERY EXCITED TYSON A MERE HE IS A BAY AREA EDUCATED AND A FORMER ENGLISH TEACHER FROM UNFIED AND WITH LOOKING AT HIS WORK FOR A WHILE. YOU MIGHT REMEMBER HIS NAME BECAUSE INSPIRED BY RICHARD WRIGHT IN THE BOOK BLACK BOY TYSON WROTE HIS OWN BOOK OF POETRY THAT CONTENT STANDARD ALIGNS. WE BEEN TRYING TO CONTACT TYSON AND HIS ORGANIZATION.
HE ALSO RUNS A PROGRAM CALLED THE BLACK PROGRAM IT'S ABOUT BUILDING LEADERS ACTIVISTS AND COLLECTIVE KNOWLEDGE SO THE EXCITING PIECE ABOUT FREEDOM SOLD MEETING EDUCATION INITIATIVES AND TYSONS WORK IS THE WORK IS IMMEDIATELY STUDENT FACING.
SO THAT WILL LOOK LIKE KICKING OFF IN DECEMBER IS PILOTING 200 STUDENTS AND NATOMAS HIGH SCHOOL AND 100 STUDENTS FROM OUR BLACK AFRICAN-AMERICAN SUBGROUPS AND NATOMAS MIDDLE AND HIGH THEY WILL GET TO MEET DIRECTLY WITH TYSON AND HIS TEAM AND THEY WILL GET EXPERIENCE AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT AND SOCIAL SCIENCE AND ENGLISH STANDARDS RELATED TO MATERIALS THAT ARE ONLY NOW REALLY BECOMING PART OF THE FRAMEWORK FOR WHAT WE TEACH.
SO I THINK IN SOME OF THE MATERIALS YOU HAVE A LINK TO I WOULD REALLY ENCOURAGE YOU TO WATCH WHERE TYSON DOESN'T INTRODUCTORY VIDEO WITH THEIR STUDENTS MONTHLY AND ALSO COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT EVENTS. I'M VERY EXCITED TO WELCOME THEM.
>> CAN YOU COME BACK TO THE PODIUM I HAVE A QUESTION HERE.
>> JUST FOR THE PUBLIC IN MY OWN CURIOSITY CAN YOU DESCRIBE HOLISTICALLY THE TEACHING.
>> I THINK IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT WHEN WE TALK ABOUT CULTURAL AND LINGUISTIC RESPONSIVE WERE NOT TALKING ABOUT MATERIALS OR INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES THAT ARE CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE -- I'LL GIVE YOU AN EXAMPLE WERE USING THE LANGUAGE IT'S ABOUT ACADEMIC VOCABULARY SO WE LOOK AT THEM IN DIFFERENT WAYS. SO ONE, IT'S ABOUT HOW WE ACADEMIC LANGUAGE SO MAYBE THAT WITH STUDENTS WE RELATE MORE TO THEM IN STEAD OF TEACHING SOMETHING AROUND NATHANIEL WE WOULD SOMETHING LIKE BLACK BOY POEMS SO THERE'S LITERALLY RELEVANT BUT LINGUISTICALLY RELEVANT SO IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT STRATEGIES IT'S ABOUT ENGLISH DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIES THAT ARE RELEVANT TO OUR STUDENTS AND BUILD ON THEIR BACKGROUND AND PRIOR KNOWLEDGE. SO IT'S BOTH. RELEVANT IS MAKE SURE WE MEET THE NEEDS OF ENGLISH LITERATURE BUT MEETING THE NEEDS OF A RELEVANT DIALOGUE FOR STUDENTS.
>> SOME PEOPLE WOULD SAY THAT'S MY STYLE AND SOME PEOPLE WOULD SAY IT'S MORE ABOUT AFRICAN-AMERICAN VERNACULAR ENGLISH. I HEAR YOU.
I'M A BIG FAN OF CONSCIOUSNESS AND MAKING SURE THERE ARE DIFFERENT APPROACHES TO
[01:25:02]
COMMUNICATE BUT SOME PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY WOULD SAY WELL THIS COULD BE A LOWERING OF THE STANDARDS. AND THAT'S MY PRIMARY CONCERN. WE SPENT A LOT OF TIME THIS BOARD HAS BEEN VERY DELIBERATE ABOUT INTRODUCING, OUR FORMER SUPERINTENDENT WAS INTERESTED IN THAT, I DO THINK IS MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE ONE DOESN'T SUPPLANT THE OTHER.>> I THINK DOCTOR WANTS TO ADDRESS THAT.
>> I WANT TO GIVE AN EXAMPLE FROM THE DOCTOR HOLLY TRAINING WE WENT TO.
HE TALKED ABOUT WORDS FOR MONEY. FOR THE VARIOUS PEOPLE IN THE AUDIENCE HE TALKED ABOUT DIFFERENT SLANG WORDS THAT PEOPLE USE FOR MONEY SO COULD BE ETHNICALLY OR CAN EVEN BE GENERATIONAL SO LIKE SOME OF THE TERMS I KNEW FOR MANY OTHER PEOPLE AT THE TABLE THAT WERE YOUNGER THAN HE SAID THEY NEVER HEARD THAT BEFORE.
WE TALKED ABOUT HOW THERE WERE DIFFERENT WAYS BUT THEN WHAT TONYA SAID WAS IT TALKED ABOUT WHAT IS THE ACADEMIC LANGUAGE FOR THAT AND HOW DO YOU LEARN THAT, AS WELL.
PSO IT'S APPRECIATING LANGUAGE STUDENTS HAVE BUT ALSO WHAT IS THE ACADEMIC LANGUAGE FOR THAT SO YOU PAIRING THEM TOGETHER SO LIKE YOU SAID WE DON'T WANT TO BE LOWERING THE STANDARD WE WANT THE STANDARD TO BE THERE BUT WE ALSO KNOW THAT PEOPLE COME FROM DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS AND SOME OF IT WAS EVEN ORIGINALLY SO PEOPLE FROM THE SOUTH OR THE EAST COAST HAD A DIFFERENT TERM THAN PEOPLE FROM THE WEST COAST SO IT WAS KNOWING THAT WE CAN HAVE THE SAME WORD COMING FROM DIFFERENT PLACES AND THEN SAY BUT IN THE ACADEMIC SETTING WE USE THE WORD MONEY.
>> TOTALLY, THIS COULD BE A WILDLY OFFENSIVE CONVERSATION, BIG FAN OF CONSCIOUSNESS.
I'M A BLACK MAN HAVE TO EXERCISE THAT CONSCIOUSNESS ON A DAILY BASIS SO THERE ARE BENEFITS TO IT I WANT TO MAKE SURE FAMILIES ARE TAKING THIS AND SAY I DON'T HAVE TO DO STANDARDIZED TESTS. THAT HAS HAPPENED I'M SPEAKING FROM EXPERIENCE.
SO FOR TEACHERS DOESN'T TAKE THIS CONVERSATION AND SAY WE STILL HAVE TO DO CALCULUS AND TRIGONOMETRY THOSE THINGS ARE IMPORTANT THERE STILL A STANDARDIZE THING OUT THERE AND THERE ARE PLACES THAT ARE NOT KIND TO BLACK PEOPLE SO WE HAVE TO BE ABLE TO EXERCISE THAT DELIBERATELY AND HAVE MORE RIGOROUS STANDARDS AND I BACK AWAY FROM THAT.
>> THE BASE OF THE EQUITY WORK IN THE PLAN IS THAT IT'S NOT ABOUT WHAT ONLY CERTAIN STUDENTS GET IT'S ABOUT HELPING ALL STUDENTS REACH THEIR PERSONAL AND ACADEMIC GOALS.
DUE TO BY HELPING THEM WITH THE RIGORS OF THEIR NEXT DECISION.
>> I NEED TO BE CLEAR SO ARE WE INSINUATING THAT THE BLACK BOY CAN'T KEEP UP WITH THE NORMAL WAY SO THEY'RE GOING TO LOWERED THE STANDARDS AND BRING EBONICS OR SLANG OKAY, JUST ASKING THIS IS A BIBLICAL CONVERSATION BUT HALLELUJAH WE ARE FINALLY HAVING IT SO I WENT AS IS BEFORE HIM. SUPERINTENDENT, YOU WERE MENTIONING CAN YOU GIVE ME AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT YOU'RE SAING ABOUT THE MONEY SO I CAN TRY TO HAVE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING.
>> I THINK WERE TRYING TO KNOW THAT PEOPLE COME IN WITH THE DIFFERENT EXPERIENCES WITH LANGUAGE AND VALIDATED THE EXPERIENCE THEY HAVE BUT THEN TALK ABOUT WHAT IS IT LIKE IN THE ACADEMIC SCHOOL SETTING AND WHAT IS THE LANGUAGE WE USE THERE.
SO YOU ARE BUILDING A BRIDGE IN YOUR VALIDATING WHERE PEOPLE COME FROM BUT YOUR TEACHING THAT ACADEMIC LANGUAGE. SO THE STANDARD IS NOT LOWERED WE ARE NOT TEACHING OTHER FORMS OF LANGUAGE WE ARE JUST VALIDATING THAT PEOPLE ARE COMING FROM DIFFERENT PLACES AND THEN WHAT DOES THAT LOOK LIKE AT SCHOOL WHEN WE USE THE ACADEMIC LANGUAGE.
>> SO MY SON CAME FROM A SINGLE FAMILY BLACK MOM HOUSEHOLD DOES THAT MEAN HE DOES NOT HAVE THE LANGUAGE COMING INTO IT?
>> IT'S NOT MAKING ASSUMPTIONS IT'S LIKE WHEN HE ASKED THE QUESTION WHO USES THIS TERM, HUGH USES THAT TERM ALL PEOPLE FOR DIFFERENT REASONS WENT WITH THAT TERM THEY SAID I'M FROM THE SOUTH WE USE THAT ONE, I GREW UP ON THE EAST COAST OKAY I'M FROM THE 80S WERE MY HEYDAY AND THAT'S A TERM WE USED AT THAT TIME. SO IT ISN'T PUTTING A VALUE TO IT OR MAKING ASSUMPTIONS BECAUSE YOU LOOK OR ACT A CERTAIN WAY BUT BUT YOU HAVE A CERTAIN BACKGROUND IT'S HAVING THOSE CONVERSATIONS AND VALIDATING DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS THAT PEOPLE COME FROM DIFFERENT PLACES BUT WE STILL HAVE THE SAME LEVEL OF
[01:30:09]
RIGOR AND EXPECTATION. IT ISN'T THAT YOU MAKE AN ASSUMPTION BECAUSE YOU LOOK OR SOUND A CERTAIN WAY OR YOU HAVE A CERTAIN BACKGROUND.>> WE ARE SCARED THAT THE WAY THINGS FALL IN THIS DISTRICT THAT IT IS GOING TO GO DOWN THAT WAY LIKE THE HOODED PERSON PUTTING IT NICELY. ESPECIALLY TONIGHT VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THIS WE SPOOKE , WE SPOKE ABOUT, THE STUDENTS ARE JUST NOT READY IF WE LOOK AT HOW THE OPPORTUNITY TO GO INTO THE COMMUNITY WHEREVER THE STRUGGLE THAT'S BECAUSE THE SECOND WE DID NOT GIVE THE MEETING TRUSTEE GRANT SAYS ALL THE TIME HOW THE PARENTS OF THE PATIENT THE PARENTS DO WHAT THEY CAN AS YOU ARE SAYING RIGHT NOW ARE NOT ABLE TO DO THAT IT'S UP TO OUR TEACHERS AND US AS A WHOLE COMMUNITY TO STEP IN.
THIS SOUNDS GREAT BUT IF WE WE TALK ABOUT IT BUT UNTIL TRULY BEINGABOUT IT WE HAVE SUCH BIG ISSUES . I HAVE CONCERNS ABOUT THE WAY IT'S BEING I JUST HOPE TO CONTINUE TO BE A HUGE PART OF THIS AND BE IN THESE CLASSROOMS AND SEE HOW THIS GOES I DON'T WANT ANY BLACK BOYS FEEL LIKE THEY ARE LESS THAN.
>> I THINK WOULD BE HAPPY TO SHARE AND THINK IF YOU SAW THE MATERIALS.
>> MAYBE THAT WOULD'VE HELPED IF WE HAD THE MATERIALS AHEAD OF TIME. FEEL SOME KIND OF WAY I HAVE TO ADMIT.
>> THE MATERIALS ARE VERY ALIGNED TO THE STATE STANDARDS SO WE CAN DEFINITELY SHARE THOSE WITH YOU. I THINK WHEN TONYA SHOWED YOU THE MATERIALS FROM DOCTOR HOLLY AND THE BLACK BOY THAT THERE ARE LINED WITH STANDARDS SO THAT THE MEETING THE SAME CALIFORNIA STANDARDS FOR THE INSTRUCTION MATERIALS.
>> MY CONCERN IS THAT THE STATE IS NOT FOR MY VOICE. WE HAVE TO TRULY MAKE SURE THAT WE COME TOGETHER AND STAY ON IT AND REALLY LOOK AT THE DIVERSE CONSTANTLY AND MEET WITH THE STUDENTS AND SEE WHAT THEIR NEEDS ARE AND HOW THE FEELING. I'M DEFINITELY INTERESTED IN COMING INTO THE CLASSROOM WHERE THERE CHANGING LANGUAGE BECAUSE I'M JUST INTERESTED IN IT ALL.
>> I'M NOT SURE CHANGING LANGUAGE IS ACCURATE. SO IT JUST SOUNDS LIKE WE ARE GOING TO DEVELOP THINGS ARE LOWER OUR STANDARDS. IT DOESN'T MEAN THAT A CHILD MAY NOT UNDERSTAND IT BUT IT'S UP TO THE TEACHERS TO TEACH IT TO THEM PROPERLY EVERYBODY DOES LEARN DIFFERENTLY I JUST FEEL AS THOUGH I DON'T WANT US TO KEEP ASKING KIDS THAT CAN'T KEEP PASSING KIDS THAT CAN'T READ. THAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE WE ARE PASSING CHILDREN AT 12. THE READING AND FIFTH GRADE LEVELS AND THEY CAN'T COUNT CHANGE BACK TO ME AT TACO BELL. THAT IS GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO FINALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE AND I HOPE WE DO IT.
>> THANK YOU FOR THE FEEDBACK.
>> I'M GOOD TO SPEAK HERE SO, ERICA, I TRULY UNDERSTAND YOUR CONCERNS BUT LET ME JUST GIVE YOU THE REAL CONDENSED VERSION HERE. I THINK FOR A LONG TIME AND THIS DISTRICT IS THAT WE REALLY DID NOT ACKNOWLEDGE WHAT KIDS BROUGHT TO THE TABLE.
WE DO NOT ACKNOWLEDGE WHAT THEY BROUGHT LINGUISTICALLY AND CULTURALLY WE SAW THEM BUT DIDN'T REALLY CONSIDER WHAT WE NEEDED TO DO. I THINK YOU HAVE BEEN IN TERMS OF LANGUAGE AND SPEAKERS WHAT WE WANT YOU TO DO IS TO GET THROUGH ENGLISH AS QUICKLY AS WE CAN AND OUT LUCKILY WE HAVE AN IMMERSION SCHOOL RECOGNIZES THAT LANGUAGE AND SEIZES A--INSTEAD OF A DEFICIT.I KNOW YOU HAVE A MIGRAINE, I AM SORRY.
I KNOW THIS IS COMPLEX BUT I COULD NEVER BE SUPPORTIVE OF SOMETHING THAT WOULD REDUCE EXPECTATIONS OF OUR STUDENTS. I THINK THAT WE NEED TO DO THIS DISTRICT AND I THINK WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THIS DISTRICT IS THAT NOW WHAT WE'RE SAYING IS THAT IN ORDER TO KEEP THE EXPECTATIONS HIGH WHAT IS IT THAT WE NOWHAVE TO PAY ATTENTION TO ? I THINK THAT'S A CONVERSATION THAT WE DIDN'T ALWAYS HAVE IN THIS DISTRICT.
WE LOOKED AT IT AS OVERALL GLOBALLY BUT WE DID NOT SEE ALL THE NUANCES, ALL THE
[01:35:03]
LINGUISTICS, ALL THE CULTURE WE DID NOT BRING ALL OF THAT TO THE TABLE AND REALLY TRY TO ADDRESS IT. I SAY THAT HAVING SERVED ON THIS BOARD FOR A LONG TIME AND HAVING TWO KIDS EDUCATED IN THIS DISTRICT. I SAW THAT AHEAD OF TIME.I AM EXCITED ABOUT THE PILOT PROGRAM FOR THE WINTER SESSION BUT I ALSO KNOW THERE WAS A TIME IN THE EDUCATIONAL WORLD WHERE WE SAY IS THAT THERE WAS NEVER, THERE WAS ALWAYS A FOCUS ON DEVELOPING LANGUAGE FOR OUR KIDS ESPECIALLY OUR KIDS OF COLOR THERE WAS A FOCUS OF GETTING THEM THE BASIC SOCIAL LANGUAGE THEY NEEDED FOR THEM TO GET BY BUT NOW FOR A LONG TIME WE REALIZED THEY HAVE TO HAVE THAT ACADEMIC LANGUAGE AND ESPECIALLY THERE'S A LOT OF RESEARCH FOR SECOND-LANGUAGE SPEAKERS THAT THEY WILL NEVER PASS THEY WILL NEVER SUCCEED THERE WILL ALWAYS BE AN ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNER UNLESS WE FOCUS ON THE ACADEMIC AND GIVE THEM THAT CURRENCY. THAT'S THE CURRENCY WE WANT FOR ALL THE KIDS EVERY KID IN THIS DISTRICT. SO I WOULD JUST SAY I KNOW THIS IS IF YOU DON'T WORK ON THIS EVERY DAY AND SEE WHAT WE SEE EVERY DAY I DON'T SEE EVERYTHING YOU SEE EVERY DAY BUT LITTLE BIT I DO KNOW I AM ENCOURAGED IT'S EVEN PART OF THE DISCUSSION THAT'S ON THE TABLE.
>> CAN ASK FOR CLARIFICATION? JUST TO MORE FULLY UNDERSTAND HOW THIS INTERACTS WITH A LOT OF THE OTHER TEXTS THAT ARE ALREADY IN THE CLASSROOM IS IT CORRECT TO STATE THIS IS IN ADDITION I THINK IT WAS I UNDERSTAND THE EXAMPLE THAT WAS BEEN POINTED OUT ABOVE WELL INSTEAD OF AUTHOR THEY ARE REMEMBER THE NAME OF THE AUTHOR BUT THIS AUTHOR BUT THEY ARE STILL DOING THEY ARE STILL READING A LOT OF THE TEXTS WE ALL, YOU KNOW, WELL THAT MOST OF US READ LIKE SHAKESPEARE, ALL THE CLASSICS THAT EXPOSE THEM TO DIFFERENT STYLES AND DIFFERENT JUST DIFFERENT THINGS I DON'T KNOW HOW ELSE TO SUMMARIZE IT OR HOW TO EXPAND IT AS A CORRECTIVE TO MAKE THAT ASSUMPTION THAT THIS IS IN ADDITION TO I GUESS THE MORE TRADITIONAL, YOU KNOW, TEXTS THAT WE ALL THINK OFWHEN WE THINK OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS ?
>> THESE ARE SUPPLEMENTARY RESOURCES IN ADDITION TO THE OTHER MATERIALS.
>> COMMENT AS A STUDENT I DO WANT THIS PROJECT BECAUSE LIKE A LOT.
BUT SAME STUDENTS OF COLOR WERE GOING THROUGH EDUCATION AND HIGHER EDUCATION AND HAVING TO FORGET WHERE THEY CAME FROM. AND THE VERNACULARS THEY USED AND BECOME A HOLY PERSON FOR A DIFFERENT WORLD THAT THEY ARE FACED WITH. I DON'T WANT IS A STUDENT WHILE THIS SOUNDS GOOD HAVING THE CONVERSATION NOW BUT I DON'T WANT FOR STUDENTS THAT EXAMPLE LOOK AT THE STATUS SAY OH YEAH THE STUDENTS WE FORCE THEM TO BE SOMETHING THEY MAYBE WERE NOT READY FOR. SO I HOPE THE BEST FOR THIS PROGRAM.
I JUST WANT STUDENTS OF COLOR IN THE DISTRICT TO STAY TRUE TO THEMSELVES AND NOT CONFORM TO ANY SOCIETY STANDARDS THAT ARE AGAINST THEM.
>> SO ONE MORE THING I WANTED TO TALK ABOUT UNDER GOAL ONE IS ACTUALLY WE ARE GOING TO BE TALK ABOUT SUMMER FIRST BECAUSE IT'S MORE OF THE ALL THE ACADEMIC YOU WILL HEAR ME TALK ABOUT IT VERY BRIEFLY IN THE AFTERSCHOOL COMPONENT AS WELL. PART OF OUR WORK IS TO BENCHMARK FROM OTHER DISTRICTS ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WAS BROUGHT TO US IS THE WORK IN FRESNO UNIFIED IS DOING IN THE A NUMBER FOR THE WORKING WITH SPRINGBOARD COLLECTIVE COLLABORATIVE AND MRS. TEACHER TRAINING ELEMENT, YOU ARE MORE THAN WELCOME TO COME UP.
WE ARE GOING TO BE PILOTING SOMETHING IN THE SPRING AS PART OF AN AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM THAT
[01:40:06]
WE THINK ARE LOOKING TO EXPAND DURING SUMMER SCHOOL OVER THE COURSE OF THE NIGHT OUR STUDENTS WILL BE IN SCHOOL. AND WE ARE KIND OF TALKING ABOUT EXCELLENCE IS HOW WERE BRANDING IT BECAUSE IT'S REALLY ABOUT THE TRAINING THAT TEACHERS GO THROUGH IN ORDER TO WORK WITH STUDENTS INSTRUCTIONALLY. SO THAT IS SOMETHING THAT WE ARE LOOKING AT FOR THE SUMMER AND WE ARE ALWAYS APPRECIATIVE WITH THE RESOURCES PEOPLE BRING OUR WAY TO HELP US LEARN HOW TO DO THINGS BETTER TO SUPPORT THE DIVERSE STUDENTS.THE NEXT SLIDE AM CERTAINLY NOT GOING TO IGNORE THIS THIS IS JUST SUPPORTIVE INFORMATION MANY OF THE THINGS TRUSTEES YOU HAVE SEEN THE DATA SETS WE HAVE PROVIDED LIKE THE AR ZERO 100 SURVEYS WE DONE WITH STUDENTS WE DID A COUPLE THINGS THAT PEOPLE ARE INTERESTED IN FEEL FREE TO TAKE A LOOK WERE NOT TO GO THROUGH ALL THESE TONIGHT BUT WE WANTED THAT TO BE AVAILABLE FOR THE PUBLIC TO LOOK AT SOCIAL INFORMATION AS WE DEVELOP FOR OUR WEBPAGE THAT WILL BE SHARING THAT AS WELL. JUST A FEW PICTURES THESE ARE THINGS THAT REALLY APPRECIATIVE AS THEY HELP US IN OUR COLLEGE FAIRS ACTUALLY HAVE DONE SOME COLLEGE STUDENTS AND YOU CAN SEE SOME OF THE WORK WITH THAT. THAT AGAIN WE ARE VERY THANKFUL FOR TO BE HERE IN OUR TEAM FOR ALWAYS COORDINATED NOT. THESE ARE THE BUNDLES WE ARE TALKING ABOUT SO AS WE GET TO GOAL NUMBER TWO IS REALLY FOCUSES ON ATTENDANCE AND ELIMINATING DISPARITIES THIS PROPORTIONALITY IN OUR DISCIPLINE PRACTICES. AS WE LOOK AT OUR DATA FOR LAST YEAR FOR ATTENDANCE WE SEE THAT OVERALL OUR BLACK AND AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENTS ON AVERAGE WERE MISSING TWO MORE DAYS OF SCHOOL. HERE THEN THE ALL STUDENTS AVERAGE. WE SEE SOME IMPROVEMENT IN SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADE AS FAR AS THE FEWEST ABSENCES ACROSS. AND THEN WE LOOK AT SOME OF OUR SUSPENSION DATA THIS IS PUBLICLY AVAILABLE DATA FROM 21-22 THAT'S WHY WERE LOOKING THAT FAR BACK.
ONE OF THE THINGS WETALK ABOUT IS PERSONALITY . THIS PROPORTIONALITY.
FOR EXAMPLE, WE HAD A 21 PERCENT PER STUDENT POPULATION IS BLACK AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENTS HOWEVER, IF WE HAVE 75 PERCENT OF OUR SUSPENSIONS ARE BLACK AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENTS THAT TELLS US THERE IS SIGNIFICANT DISPROPORTIONALITY WITHIN OUR SUSPENSIONS.
IF WE HAVE 21 PERCENT OF OUR STUDENTS THAT ARE BLACK AFRICAN-AMERICAN AND 21 PERCENT OF OUR SUSPENSIONS ARE FOR BLACK AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENTS THAT'S PROPORTIONAL.
WE LOOK AT THAT DATA AS WELL AS JUST A DIFFERENT WAY TO LOOK AT IT YOU CAN SEE THAT THERE ARE A THROUGH K THEY ARE NOT HERE TO CALL ANYBODY OUT BUT THEY DO LIKE TO LOOK AT AROUND AND LEARNED AND YOU CAN SEE THAT IF YOU LOOK AT THE DATA FROM THAT YOUR 18 PERCENT DISTRICTWIDE.
TO THE FIGHT AS BLACK AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENTS AND 38 PERCENT WERE BLACK AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENTS SO IT'S DISPROPORTIONATE AT A RATE OF 2.2.
YOU CAN SEE THERE ARE SEVERAL DISTRICTS WITH A HIGHER RATE OF THIS PROPORTIONALITY AND SOME HAVE A LOWER RATE OF THIS PROPORTIONALITY. THOSE ARE THINGS THAT WE LOOK AT AND WE ASK OURSELVES THE QUESTIONS ABOUT HOW WE ARE SUPPORTING OUR STUDENTS THROUGH OTHER ALTERNATIVE MEANS OF CORRECTION OTHER MEANS OF CORRECTION PROACTIVE MEASURES THAT HELP PREVENT THOSE BEHAVIORS THAT MAY LEAD TO SUSPENSION AND ALSO WANT STUDENTS HAVE BEEN SUSPENDED FOR CERTAIN BEHAVIORS THAT VIOLATE EDUCATION CODE AND HOW DO WE DO THINGS THAT CAN SUPPORT THEM TO NOT REPEAT THOSE BEHAVIORS? THERE'S A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT WAYS WE HAVE TO LOOK AT THIS. I WANTED TO SHARE A COUPLE OF FIRST, AGAIN THANKS TO DEIDRE AND HER PARTNERSHIP WITH OUR MENTORING PROGRAMS WE ARE GETTING A MEETING SCHEDULED WITH MICHAEL AND HIS TEAM AND THEIR TALK ABOUT OTHER WOULD LIKE TO EXPLORE IN ADDITION TO BEING A MENTOR PROGRAM FOR OUR STUDENTS HOW THERE'S FAMILY ENGAGEMENT AT A MEANINGFUL LEVEL SO WILL BE COLLABORATING ON SOME IDEAS AND FIGURED OUT HOW TO REACH MORE INTO THAT FAMILY ENGAGEMENT. SOMETHING I WANT TO GIVE AS AN EXAMPLE WE WANT TO GIVE CREDIT TO SITES WHEN THERE ARE SITE CONSTRUCTION WE LOOK AT THE DATA AND WE MAKE THESE DECISIONS ONE OF THE THINGS THAT INTERCOM HIGH SCHOOL DID LAST YEAR 'S THEY WERE LOOKING AT FIGHTS IN PARTICULAR AND SUSPENSION FOR FIGHTS ONE OF THE THINGS THAT'S HARD I DON'T WANT TO OVERGENERALIZE WE DON'T WANT TO TAG EVERY STUDENT IN A CERTAIN GROUP AS BEING A CERTAIN WAY THEY ALL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM THAT'S ACTUALLY THE OPPOSITE WHAT WE WANT TO DO WE DO WANT TO DRILL DOWN AND LEARN HOW TO IDENTIFY STUDENTS
[01:45:03]
BY NAME THAT HAVE SPECIFIC NEEDS AND HOW WE CAN ADDRESS THOSE NEEDS.INTERCOM HIGH SCHOOL WITH YOUR PROCESS AND THEY LOOKED AT SUSPENSIONS FOR FIGHTING AND THEY DROVE DOWN IN THE IDENTIFIED A GROUP OF 22 FEMALE STUDENTS BLACK AND AFRICAN-AMERICAN THAT HAD ISSUES WITH FIGHTING. SO THEIR MENTAL HEALTH TEAM AND SAID WE WANT TO DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT HERE WE WANT TO HELP THESE STUDENTS THAT HAVE ALREADY FALLEN INTO THIS BEHAVIOR HOW DO WE HELP THEM NOT REPEAT IT.
SO THEY INVITED IT WAS THEY INVITED 22 STUDENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN A MULTIWEEK PROGRAM WITH THEIR MENTAL HEALTH TEAM AND 19 OF THE STUDENTS ACCEPTED THE INVITATION AND GRADUATED THAT PROGRAM. 12 OF THEM THIS FALL HAVE BECOME A MENTORS TO A NEW GROUP OF STUDENTS AND THEY NOW ARE CONTINUE TO DRILL DOWN ON THE DATA AND IDENTIFY THE NEXT GROUP OF STUDENTS. LAST YEAR THERE WERE 11 REFERRALS AND 40 DAY SUSPENSION FOR A SEMESTER THAT'S WHAT LED THEM TO ANALYZE THE DATA PUT TOGETHER THE GROUP THE SECOND SEMESTER LAST YEAR FOR THE SAME COHORT OF STUDENTS THAT GRADUATED FROM THE PROGRAM THERE'S BEEN ONE TO DATE EXPANSION AND WHAT NONE FOR FIGHTING. SO THAT'S SOMETHING WE HAD A PROMISING PRACTICE THAT WE ASK HOW DO WE TAKE THAT TO SCALE? PHOW CAN WE TAKE THAT OVER TO LGA OR NATOMAS HI AND DO THE SAME PRACTICE OF NOT OVERGENERALIZING AND IDENTIFY THE GROUP OF STUDENTS THAT MAYBE IS A COHORT OF 10-20 THAT MAY NEED TO DO SOME MORE INTENTIONAL WORK WITH.
THESE ARE THE THINGS THAT WE WANT TO LEARN FROM SO THAT WE CAN BETTER SERVE OUR STUDENTS AND I JUST WANTED TO RECOGNIZE THAT AND GIVE AN IDEA. I ALREADY TOLD YOU THERE'S A DRAFT STAMP ON HERE FOR A RECENT ONE THINK THAT'S NOT DISCOVERED THAT SHOULD BE IS TRUSTEES YOU WERE EARLY ADOPTERS OF A RESOLUTION AROUND ILLUMINATING SUSPENSIONS FOR PARTICULAR ETIQUETTE SO FOR THE PUBLIC EDUCATION CODE SECTION 48 900 TALKS ABOUT SUSPENSIONS AND EXPULSIONS IN THE SUBSEQUENT SECTION START EXPULSIONS.
IT IDENTIFIES A VARIETY OF BEHAVIORS THAT STUDENTS CAN BE SUSPENDED FOR.
ONE OF THE BEHAVIORS IS 4800 K SUB ITEM IT'S WILLFUL DEFIANCE OF SCHOOL ACTIVITY.
IT KIND OF BECAME THAT CATCHALL IF IT WASN'T FIGHTING IT WASN'T FOR DRUGS IF IT WASN'T FOR FULLY BUT THE BEHAVIOR WAS-- TRUSTEES TOOK A BIG STEP WITH RESOLUTION EARLY BEFORE STATE LAW CAUGHT UP AND SAID WE ARE NOT DOING THAT. WHEN I JUST WENT TO ALLOW STUDENTS TO BE SENT HOME FROM SCHOOL FOR WHAT WE ARE DEFINED AS DEFIANCE OF SCHOOL ACTIVITIES WE DO MORE AND DO BETTER AND FIND WAYS OF SUPPORTING OUR STUDENTS WHO HAVE BEHAVIOR AT SCHOOL. SO THAT'S A CREDIT TO YOU.
>> I HAVE A QUICK QUESTION I THINK THIS IS GREAT WORK I THINK THIS IS THE PLACE TO HAVE THESE DISCUSSIONS IF WE GO BACK TO SLIDES YOU DID SHOUT OUT SOME EARLY ADOPTION TRYING TO GET RID OF THE WILLFUL DEFIANCE BUT OUR DISPROPORTIONALITY ADOPTED EARLY STILL REMAIN CONSTANT OR IS IT AT THE SAME LEVEL?
>> I THINK THAT IS PARTICULAR TO 4900 K THIS IS THE DISPROPORTIONALITY USING THAT 2.2 NUMBER IS FOR ALL THE OTHE .
>> NEXT PART OF MY QUESTION IS THERE A DIFFERENT CATCHALL? BECAUSE SOMETIMES THE SOFT BIGOTRY THAT SWITCHES FOR LACK OF A BETTER TERM THEY CAN'T CALL YOU THE N WORD ANYMORE SO WE CAN SAY WILLFUL DEFIANCE SO WE WILL CALL IT SOMETHING ELSE. I WONDERED WHAT THE DATA SHOWS OKAY WHAT'S THE NEW CATCHALL IF THERE IS ONE WHAT ARE THE BEHAVIORS THAT GET YOU EXPENDED FOR?
>> WE WILL NOTE THAT IS SOMETHING WE WILL SHARE THOUGHTFULLY I DON'T WANT TO SPEAK OFF-THE-CUFF. AS WE LOOK AT GOAL THREE TRUSTEES ONE OF THE THINGS YOU ARE CONCERNED ABOUT IS THE SAFETY OF STUDENTS WE TALKED A LOT HERE WE HAVE THE SCHOOL DEPARTMENT A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF INVESTMENT AND HOW WE ESTABLISH A PHYSICAL
[01:50:01]
ENVIRONMENT AS WELL AS JUST A CLIMATE WHERE STUDENTS FEEL SAFE AND CONNECTED.O FOR YEARS WE HAVE BEEN SERVING ONCE A YEAR STUDENTS NOW WE ASK THE SAME QUESTIONS AND WE DO THE FOLLOWING SPRING AROUND SAFETY AND CONNECTEDNESS SO THERE'S A SPECIFIC QUESTION THAT ASKS HOW STUDENTS FEEL SAFE AT SCHOOL AND THE? CONNECTEDNESS.THIS WAS NOT ABOUT EXACT PERCENTAGES I JUST WANTED A VISUAL SO YOU COULD SEE THE FAR LEFT IS A GRAND TOTAL FOR ALL STUDENTS AND THEN YOU CAN SEE EACH OF OUR STUDENT GROUPS ARE ACCOUNTED FOR THE GRAYBAR IS 2022 AND IN THE FALL AND IN THE TOOLBAR IS THIS FALL 2023.
AND SO, YOU CAN SEE THERE IS A SLIGHT DECLINE FOR BLACK AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENTS AND THERE WAS FOR OTHER GROUPS AS WELL. AND THEN WE START TO DIG INTO THOSE NUMBERS IN A REALLY APPRECIATIVE OF THE INVESTMENT THAT ALLOWS US TO DO TO LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR STUDENTS HOW TO SUPPORT THEM THIS IS ONE OF THOSE THINGS WE DIG INTO.
CONNECTEDNESS, SAME THING. AND THEN A FEW ITEMS AGAIN RECOGNIZING THE SITE INITIATIVES SO AT NATOMAS HIGH SCHOOL THAT THE BLACK EXCELLENCE BALL AND CORONATION WITH BSU AND JUST CELEBRATING THE STUDENTS. THE SPRING EXCELLENCE A SPRING PILOT THE REASON WHY IT'S YOU FOR THE AFTERSCHOOL COMPONENT. AND THEN REALLY APPRECIATIVE OF PARTNERSHIPS THAT WE HAVE WITH PEOPLE THAT WE REALLY BELIEVE WE ARE SUPPORTED THE GROUP OF STUDENTS AND HELP YOU MAXIMIZE THEIR SCHOOL. WE ARE, SOBER NUMBERS SOME DATA POLICIES RELATED TO THIS JUST A FEW PICTURES OF OUR KIDS. AND THAT 1300 CAMPAIGN YOU RECOGNIZE. AS WE LOOK AT GOAL FOR WE ARE REALLY TALKING ABOUT THAT PARENT EDUCATION AND ENGAGEMENT PARENT UNIVERSITY DOES WORKSHOPS IN PARTNERSHIP ON THE WEEKEND AND THAT'S WITH EMPHASIS WITH OUR COLLEGE FAIRS AND VISITS.
AGAIN I MENTIONED WE WORK WITH KEY FAMILY ENGAGEMENT FREEDOMS ALL MEDIUM PROGRAM ENCOURAGE YOU TO TAKE A LOOK AT THE VIDEO IT'S ACTUALLY LINKEDIN HERE IT'S FOR ANOTHER SCHOOL DISTRICT TO GIVE YOU AN IDEA OF WHAT IT WILL LOOK LIKE IN OUR DISTRICT AND THERE'S THE ELEMENT OF AS OUR STUDENTS ARE GIVEN THE SUPPORT MENTORSHIP THIS VIDEOS THAT BECAME SHARED WITH FAMILY SO THEY CAN SEE THE WORK BEING DONE WITH THE STUDENTS.
AND THEN FIVE THIS IS ABOUT THE HIRING AND TRAINING OF STAFF. JUST WANT TO CALL A FEW THINGS FOR THE LAST SIX COURSE THOUGH YEARS OF INVESTING IN THE TEACHER CALLED THE EDUCATOR PROGRAM MORE THAN JUST TEACHING POSITIONS. WE WORK WITH THE INITIAL FOUR HOURS TRAINING WITH DOCTOR HOLLY AND YOU CAN SEE THE PERCENTAGES OF STAFF THAT PARTICIPATED IN THAT OR DID AS PART OF THEIR WORKDAY. AND THEN OUR PRINCIPLES ALL 16 OF THE PENCILS ARE ENGAGED IN ONGOING WITH DOCTOR HOLLY ORGANIZATION.
THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR. ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE WANT TO LOOK AT IS SOME DATA.
SINCE THE ONSET OF THE DIVERSE FUTURE EDUCATORPROGRAM IN 2017 .
DIVERSITY OF STAFF WE WERE ABOUT 26 PERCENT FOR OUR TEACHING STAFF AND THEM IF YOU LOOK WE HAVE INCREASED ABOUT 10 PERCENT OVER THE LAST SIX YEARS FOR THE PROGRAM.
FOR MANAGEMENT WE SEE ALSO AN INCREASE OF ABOUT 10 PERCENT. I THINK THE REALITY IS TRUSTEES ARE WILLING TO INVEST A LOT OF MONEY THAT YOU HAVE THE TRACKING WHAT WE BELIEVE IS THE RIGHT TYPE OF CANDIDATES FOR OURSTUDENTS . WORD GETS OUT THERE AND MAKES IT CLEAR WHAT THE DESIRED EXPECTATION IS HERE. AND THEN WE DID SPECIFICALLY BLACK AFRICAN-AMERICAN STAFF FOR OUR TEACHING AND OUR STAFF.
>> ONE REALLY QUICK THING I AM SO PROUD OF THEM AND ALWAYS TO TALK ABOUT THEM MARCUS MENTIONED IT THE HOUSE WORK FOR US WHEN TRUSTEES WENT TO HIM I THINK MAYBE HE WAS TO TEACH ONE DAY SO WE TALKED ABOUT WHAT WOULD IT TAKE HE DID NOT HAVE HIS BACHELORS AND SHORT ON TIME AND THAT TRUSTEE IS DOING THE WAS THE IMPETUS FOR HIM TO GET BACK IN IT.
HE FINISHED HIS BACHELORS AND SENT ME PICTURES WHEN HE WAS BACK AT OHIO STATE DOING HIS
[01:55:06]
GRADUATION CEREMONY AND THE PICTURE ON THE RIGHT CORNER IS HIM GETTING THE FAREWELL PICTURE FROM FROM HIS COLLEAGUES IS NOW AT NATOMAS MIDDLESCHOOL AS A COUNSELOR .SO YOUR INVESTMENT WHILE IT TOOK A WHILE HE WANTS TO BE WITH OUR STUDENTS.
DEI WEBPAGE COMING SOON THE LITTLE GREEN BOX THERE ARE SOME THINGS WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THIS FLYER WAS TO GET ALL IT WILL BE SOMETHING THAT WILL BE ACCESSIBLE THERE FOR THE DATA THAT WE SHARE TONIGHT. THE LAST THING I'M ASKING IS FOR TRUSTEES TO APPROVE A FEW THINGS. SO THE PDF THE BOOKS RELATED TO THAT IN THE MENTORSHIP WE ARE REQUESTING THAT. THE TCM MATERIALS THAT WERE GOING TO BE LAUNCHING WITH THE INTERSECTION AND IS SOMETHING THAT WE ANTICIPATE WILL PROBABLY BE COMING BACK AS WE TALK ABOUT EXPANDING THAT. AND THE SPRINGBOARD COLLABORATIVE STARTING THAT PILOT IN THE SPRING AND THEM LOOKING BACK INTO THE SUMMER AND THE SPRING EXCELLENCE PROGRAM. SO ASKING FOR APPROVAL WITH TRUSTEES.
>> I THINK I HAVE WITH IS A COMBINATION OF A QUESTION SOMEWHERE DEEP IN THE COMMENTS I JUST I MADE A COUPLE NOTES ONE THING THAT I THINK PERMEATES ALL OF THIS GREAT WORK IS SOMETHING I THINK OF HER OUR COMMUNITY MEMBERS TALK ABOUT OFTEN WHICH IS WANTING TO REALLY KNOW WHAT TANGIBLE ACTIONS IS OUR DISTRICT TAKING TO ADDRESS LITERACY AND OVERALL ACADEMIC SUCCESS FOR OUR BLACK AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENTS AND OF COURSE TO A LARGER DEGREE ALL THE STUDENTS OF COLOR? NOT THAT IS NOT HELPING TO SEE COMPARATIVE DATA IT ALWAYS IS AT THE STATE LEVEL ACROSS THE REST OF THE COUNTY BUT I APPRECIATE THE INFORMATION AGAIN WHAT IS OUR DISTRICT TANGIBLY DOING IT DIRECTLY FUNDING AND WHEN IS IT GOING TO BE AVAILABLE? IF IT'S NOT ALREADY AVAILABLE. ON DAY NE AND I THINK THAT'S REALLY THE KIND OF CRUX OF IT FOR ME. AND AGAIN BECAUSE OF WHAT I'VE HEARD OUT IN ABOUT AND JUST LOOKING FORWARD AND LOOKING AT FUTURE YEARS TO COME HOW CAN WE CONTINUE HAVING REALLY STRONG COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT FOR THE FUTURE YEARS HAVE IN STORE WHICH WE CAN SHARE PROGRAMS LIKE IYT PARENT AND FAMILY ENGAGEMENT HAS A VIOLENT IN THE FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES FOR INPUT. IN THEIR WORK SPEAKS FOR ITSEL .
ANOTHER, I HAVE THAT I BRIEFLY WANT TO MAKE IS I AGREE WITH REALLY AGGRAVATING A LOT OF THE DATA FOR THE TOPICS THAT WE CAN SEE HERE. SOME OF THEM AN EXAMPLE BEING WELL ONE THAT CAME TO MIND THIS SOME DISCUSSION WHAT ARE THE REASONS AND CATEGORIES FOR SUSPENSIONS NOW AND I THINK DISAGGREGATING THAT IS REALLY HELPFUL FOR EVERYONE INCLUDING US AS TRUSTEES. MAKE SURE WERE NOT MISSING ANY I THINK TRUSTEE GRANT REFERRED TO IT AS BIGOTRY. OUR BE UNINTENTIONALLY OR INTENTIONALLY MISSING SOME ARE REALLY PERVASIVE PROBLEMS IF WE DON'T HAVE A CHANCE TO LOOK AT THE DISAGGREGATED DATA? ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF THAT IS THE DEMOGRAPHICS WHO AMONGST HER EDUCATORS ARE ENGAGED IN A LOT OF TRAININGS THAT ARE REALLY HELPFUL LIKE THE DEI TRAININGS AND ON THE OTHER PART OF EDUCATION I HAD A CHANCE TO REALLY IMPORTANT DATABASE TO LOOK AT TO BE BLUNT I'VE BEEN PART OF THE BREAKDOWN OF WHO IS ENGAGING IN A REALLY, REALLY HELPFUL TRAININGS AND IS PRIMARILY THE STEP OF COLOR. SO ARE WE ENGAGING A LOT OF THE STAFF BECAUSE IT IS I IMAGINE SOMETIMES VOLUNTARY. ARE WE ENGAGING THEM IN TRAININGS LIKE THOSE RELATED TO
[02:00:01]
MICRO AGGRESSIONS. MAKING SOME ASSUMPTIONS WITH THOSE QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS FOR THOSE OF THE THINGS THAT COME TO MIND AGAIN WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF ALL OF THIS WORK.BUT I APPRECIATE NOT JUST THE INCLUSIVITY BUT THE INTERSECTIONALITY THAT'S EMBEDDED INTO ALL THIS WORK JUST RECOGNIZING THAT WE HAVE BLACK AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENTS WHO ALSO MIGHT HAVE PARENTS AND FAMILY MEMBERS THAT SPEAK SPANISH.
MAYBE THEY THEMSELVES SPEAK SPANISH. I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE EXACT NUMBERS LOOK AT ACROSS OUR DISTRICT BUT RECOGNIZING THAT THE ADDITIONAL SUPPORTS IS ALWAYS GOING TO BE HELPFUL BECAUSE THEY CAN BECOME FULLY ENCOMPASSED IN AND CAPTURE EVERYONE AND I SHOULD SAY ENGAGE THEM IN LEARNING BUT THAT INCLUDES AGAIN WHAT I HAD IN MIND.
>> WE HAVE TO PUBLIC COMMENT REQUEST AND THEN GIOVANNI SECOND ISSUE STILL HERE.
>> GOOD EVENING EVERYONE WANT TO STAND UP AND STRETCH AFTER THAT LONG PRESENTATION.
I DON'T WANT TO WASTE MY TWO MINUTES. ON BEHALF OF THE LEADERSHIP TEAM AND PARENTS OF NATOMAS WE ARE PLEASED TO SEE THAT THE DISTRICT IS MAKING THIS EFFORT TO BRING CULTURALLY RELEVANT PROGRAMS IN ADDITION TO THE ONES WE REACH OUR SCHOLARS.
YES, THERE ARE SOME TWEAKING AND MORE INVESTIGATION THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE TO MAKE SURE IT'S NOT DEGRADING. OUR GROUP HAS STRETCHED URGENT AND DIRE NEED TO SEPARATE THE READING AND APPREHENSION SKILLS OF OUR K-12 STUDENTS. WE HAVE UNTIL 2400 AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENTS 70 PERCENT OF THEM ARE READING BELOW GRADE LEVEL I WOULD LIKE FOR OUR DISTRICT TO BRING THE STATS ON HOW THAT NUMBER HAS BEEN REDUCED FROM QUARTER TO QUARTER.THE ONBOARDING OF THE FREEDOM SOLD MEDIA EDUCATION INITIATIVE SEEMS TO BE RELEVAN . THE TEACHER CREATED MATERIALS ARE BEING IMPLEMENTED DURING THE WINTER SESSION AS A PILOT PROGRAM SEEMS TO BE SOMEWHAT PROGRESSIVE AS WELL AS THE SPRINGBOARD COLLABORATIVE ACCELERATED READING PROGRAM FOR K2 THIRD BUT WHAT'S HAPPENED WITH OUR FOURTH OR 12TH GRADERS? IT'S ESSENTIAL THAT ALL OF THEM RECEIVE INTERVENTION FOR THE READING. ESPECIALLY OUR 11TH AND 12TH GRADERS WE WERE TOLD RECENTLY THAT WHEN A VIRTUAL GRADERS IS READING AT THE KINDERGARTEN LEVEL. SO WHEN SPEAKING TO ESTHER PITTS ABOUT IT I KNEW THAT THAT ONE STUDENT IS REFLECTION OF ALL A LOT OF OTHER STUDENTS. LET'S BRING BACK SOME ACTUAL DATA BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR HOW INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS ARE BEING ALLOWED TO RECEIVE INTERVENTION SO THAT WHEN THEY LEAVE 12TH GRADE THEY WILL NOT BE READING AT THE KINDERGARTEN LEVEL OF THE READING AT 12 GRADE LEVEL IF THAT'S POSSIBLE. MY TIME IS UP, THANK YOU.
>> SO IT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE WE HAVE ANYWHERE SPEAKERS. OH, THERE SHE IS I DID NOT SEE.
I CALLED YOUR NAME I APOLOGIZE I DIDN'T SEE YOU IF YOUR HAND WENT UP.
>> GOOD EVENING, MY NAME IS GIOVANNA I WANTED TO START OFF WITH THE MONTH OF OCTOBER WAS NATIONAL BULLYING AWARENESS MONTH. TODAY I'M HERE TO ADDRESS AND SAFETY ISSUES WITHIN THE DISTRICT YOU GUYS HAVE A ZERO-TOLERANCE BULLYING IN THE GRADE SCHOOL DISTRICT.
>> GIOVANNI WE HAVE 15 A ON HERE BUT THIS IS NOT THE AGENDA ITEM.
>> SO WE HAVE THOUGHT WE HAD ONE FOR YOU ALREADY. I HAVE ONE FOR YOU FOR PUBLIC COMMENT.
>> SO THIS IS FOR 15 A? SORRY.
>> I APOLOGIZE I'M NEW TO THIS.
>> I WILL CALL YOU BACK UP WHEN WE GET TO THAT. YOU DO HAVE TO BUT ARE YOU SPEAKING ABOUT THIS PARTICULAR ABOUT THIS PARTICULAR ITEM?
>> I WANTED TO BOUNCE OFF WITH WITH WHAT SHE WAS SHARING IF THAT'S OKAY?
>> THIS SPEAKS SPECIFICALLY TO THE ACTION AND TO TAKE BASED ON ACTIONS WE ARE TAKING FOR ACADEMIC SUCCESS LITERACY.
[02:05:02]
>> I MEAN YOU WHOLE SLIDESHOW OF 15 A OF BLACK AFRICAN-AMERICAN CHILDREN I HAVE A BLACK AFRICAN-AMERICAN CHILDREN IN THE SCHOOL SYSTEM SO I WAS TRYING TO SEE IF I CAN MAKE A COMMENT IN MY ABLE TO DO THAT? YES, SIR NO?
>> IT HAS TO BE GERMANE TO THE SPECIFIC ACTION SO IF YOUR SPEECH HAS ELEMENTS OF THAT, WHY NOT.
>> I MEAN YOU GUYS WERE SAYING SOMETHIG ABOUT BASICALLY, YOU KNOW,.
>> AS LONG AS IT'S RELEVANT TO THIS.
>> I JUST WANTED TO YOU GUYS WERE SAYING AND CHANGING THE LANGUAGE FOR AFRICAN-AMERICAN KIDS AND CHANGING CERTAIN THINGS FOR THESE AFRICAN-AMERICAN KIDS BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY THEY ARE EQUAL, I THINK.
>> ABOUT WE START YOUR TIME AND YOUR FULL TWO MINUTES WE WILL START IT OVER AGAIN.
HERE GOES THE GREEN LIGHT NOW YOU GET YOUR FULL TWO MINUTES.
>> I WANTED TO SPEAK ABOUT THE MATTERS YOU GUYS ARE SAYING ABOUT THE BLACK AFRICAN-AMERICAN CHILDREN. I JUST WANTED TO ADD THAT WE ARE EQUAL.
I HAVE CHILDREN THAT ARE AFRICAN-AMERICAN REGARDLESS OF THE COLOR REGARDLESS OF WHAT BACKGROUND THEY ARE FROM REGARDLESS OF ANYTHING THEY SHOULD NOT BE HELD IN A LOWER STANDARD BECAUSE OF THEIR TEST SCORES. I FEEL LIKE THAT'S WORTH A SCHOOL ISSUE AND THEN A TEACHER ISSUE TO SPEND MORE TIME TO KNOW THE CULTURE OF THE CHILD THEY ARE DEALING WITH. AND TEACHING THEM THE SAME THING BECAUSE EVERYBODY HAS A BRAIN, EVERYBODY CAN TAKE ANYTHING FROM YOU BUT THEY CAN'T TAKE YOUR EDUCATION WHICH YOU RETAIN. WHATEVER WE TEACH OUR CHILDREN WE CAN PROSPER FROM THAT.
I FEEL LIKE THEY SHOULDN'T BE HAVING ANYTHING LOWERED OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT BECAUSE WE ARE ALL THE SAME WE ARE ALL EQUAL AND WE ALL HAVE THE SAME COLOR BRAINS WE JUST HAVE DIFFERENT COLOR, THAT'S PRETTY MUCH IT.I JUST WANTED TO TOUCH BASE WITH THAT.
IT'S REALLY HARD SUBJECT TO TALK ABOUT.
>> THANK YOU SO WE WILL CALL YOU BACK UP AGAIN AT THE END. YOU ALSO HAVE ANOTHER CARD FOR PUBLIC COMMENT. THERE'S ANOTHER ITEM YOU WANTED TO SO.
>> AND THAT WAS MY TWO MINUTES?
>> THE FIRST OF ALL WE ARE ASKING FOR ACTION ON THESE ITEMS JUST NOTING THERE'S MORE TO COME THERE ARE THINGS TO EVALUATE AND THINGS IN THE COMING MONTHS FOR CONSIDERATION BUT TONIGHT RELEASE ABOUT THESE THREE INITIAL ELEMENTS.
>> WE HAVE CHECKPOINTS ON THESE THREE ITEMS?
>> MOVED BY TRUSTEE GRANT. SECOND BY TRUSTEE HARDEN. CALL THE ROLE, PLEASE.
>> GRANT, HARDEN, HEREDIA, MOR , GOMEZ.

>> MOVED TO APPROVE WAS VERY INSTRUMENTAL THE COMMUNITY AND BRINGING THIS RESOLUTION FOR.
>> LOOK FOR SECOND. DISCUSSION. AND WILL VOTE ON IT.
WE HAVE A MOTION BY TRUSTEE GRANT AND SECOND BY TRUSTEE HARDEN.
NOW WE HAVE TWO PUBLIC COMMENT .
[02:10:26]
>> THANK YOU BOARD MEMBERS I KNOW IT'S BEEN A LONG NIGHT I'LL TRY TO GIVE A QUICK I GIVE YOU A COUPLE PAPERS ONE WITH THE YELLOW HIGHLIGHTING I KNOW WE APPRECIATE YOU ALL TAKING THESE STEPS LOOKING AT THESE HERE AND WILL AFFECT ON THIS CONVERSATION HERE THESE ARE NOT JUST CHECKED BOXES THERE'S ACTUALLY SUBSTANCE BEHIND WHAT WE HAVE HERE.
THESE ONE IS HIGHLIGHTED IS WHAT WAS ACTUALLY TAKEN OUT OF THE RESOLUTION THAT WE ACTUALLY WORK FOR THE DISTRICT WHICH WE DO APPRECIATE THE WORK SO WENT TO READ THAT OUT LOUD.
THE GENOCIDE BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 1, 1984, SYSTEMATIC AND ORGANIZED GENOCIDE WAS.
BUT THE GOVERNMENT OF INDIA IN NOVEMBER 19 FOR IN THE CAPITAL TERRITORIES IN THE DIFFERENT STATES THERE. THE GENOCIDE LASTED THREE DAYS AND 30,000 DIED IN THEIR HOMES WHEREAS IN JUNE 2023 CALIFORNIA LEGISLATURE UNANIMOUSLY OPPOSITION PASSED RESOLUTION BILL AGR TO CONDEMNING THE 19 FOR ISLANDS IN INDIA AS A GENOCIDE.
THE REASON I WANT TO MENTION THIS TO ALL IS IMAGINE TALKING ABOUT THE HOLOCAUST IN NAZI GERMANY MENTIONED TALK ABOUT THE PLIGHT OF THE BLACK COMMUNITY HERE IN AMERICA WITHOUT TALKING ABOUT THE SLAVERY THAT THE COMMUNITY WINTER IMAGINE TALKING ABOUT THE INTERNMENT OF JAPANESE AMERICANS DAMAGING WHERE IT TOOK PLACE.
AT BEST VEHICLE THAT IGNORANCE AT WORST WE CALL ACTIVELY COVERING UP CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY. THERE IS ANOTHER DOCUMENT YOU ALL HAVE THIS IS NOT SOMETHING THAT WAS 40 YEARS AGO IS THE STUFF THAT IS CURRENTLY THE COMMUNITY IS DOING WITH JUST TODAY WAS A HEARING IN THE CAPITAL WASHINGTON DC WHERE CALIFORNIA CONGRESSMAN ERICA QUESTION FBI DIRECTOR ON WHAT THE FBI IS DOING TO PROTECT THE SIKH COMMUNITY FROM TRANS THREATS. BECAUSE CAN AMEND AND ADD THIS LANGUAGE BACK INTO THE RESOLUTION THAT WAS TAKEN OUT AND IF NOT TODAY THEN HOPEFULLY TABLE RESOLUTION INVESTED NEXT MONTH INCLUDING THIS LANGUAGE, THANK YOU.
>> GOOD AFTERNOON, EVERYONE. EVENING SUPERINTENDENT, SCHOOL MEMBERS I'M ACTUALLY THE SECOND VICE PRESIDENT OF THE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT AND HERE IS A COMMUTER MEMBER BOARD PRESIDENT OF THE LARGEST SIKH ORGANIZATION IN THE STATES SHUT OUT TO THE SIKH ON ANOTHER-- WERE LOOKING TO ENGAGE WITH THEM AND SINCE I WAS 15 YEARS OLD AND THE SPEAKS TO LOT TO THE ORGANIZATION. AND WHAT I'VE BEEN ABLE TO DO SO FAR.
THE CITY AND REGION IS HOME TO ONE OF THE LARGEST SIKH COMMITTEES IN THE UNITED STATES LEGACY RESOLUTION ORGANIZING AND BRINGAWARENESS TO THE COMMUNITY .
REALLY HIGHLIGHTING THE COMMUNITY'S ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN HISTORY BUT AS HE MENTIOND I WANT TO MAKE NOTE THIS RESOLUTION CAN BE SHRUNKEN AND STRENGTHENED.
WHILE MENTION IT'S A BIT OF INVENTION THE NEXT DAY BEFORE GENOCIDE SPECIFICALLY AND SPECIFICALLY NAME THE PERPETRATORS THE INDIAN GOVERNMENT.
ONE CANNOT FULLY APPRECIATE BRING AWARENESS TO THE SIKH COMMUNITY AND ITS CONVERSIONS WITHOUT MENTIONING HOW AND WHY WE ARE HERE THE FACT THAT WE CONTINUE TO LIVE WITH SACRAMENTO IS HOME TO POLITICAL ASYLUMS ENDED IN YOUR DISTRICT ACROSS THE WATER OVER DESCENDENTS OF GENOCIDE SURVIVORS WE CAN'T CELEBRATE OUR HERITAGE WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING OUR HISTORY. MOTION CARRIES 5-0 UNIFIED IS PASSING A SIKH AWARENESS AND APPRECIATION AS WELL. IN AN EFFORT TO SHOW THAT THE BOARD MEETING TOMORROW NIGHT I'M HAPPY TO SHARE THE RESOLUTION WITH YOU ALL I IMPLORE YOU WORK WITH MYSELF HERE TO BE A PARTNER AND WORK WITH THE SIKH COMMUNITY OPUS STRENGTHEN THIS RESOLUTION WILL BEFORE SO WE CAN BRING FRUIT OUR BIGGEST MUCH FOR TAKING THE TIME HAD HEROES.
[02:15:02]
>> COMMENTS FROM THE BOARD. >> I WANT TO HONOR THE ONES THAT CAME HERE TODAY FROM ONE TRUSTEE TO ANOTHER APPRECIATE YOU SHOWING UP.
SO I'M LOOKING AT THIS LANGUAGE HERE I WOULD LIKE A LITTLE BIT MORE OF A JOURNEY BEFORE INTRODUCING THIS INTO OUR RESOLUTION. I WOULD LIKE TO PARTNER WITH YOU BOTH DO OUR STUDY INTO THE FORMER TRUSTEE AND DO A LOT OF EDUCATIONAL THINGS.
MY PREFERENCE IS FOR THIS TO HAPPEN BEFORE ADDING ANY KIND OF LANGUAGE LOOK FOR THAT JOURNEY A LITTLE MORE SO UNCOMFORTABLE WITH THE RESOLUTION FOR TONIGHT I'M HOPING TO FURTHER CONVERSATIONS ON THIS AND BE MORE EDUCATED. MY PREFERENCE IS A LITTLE BIT MORE DELIBERATE IN MAKING THIS AND UNDERSTAND THE GEOPOLITICAL INDICATIONS OF THIS I HOPE THIS OFFENSIVE I'M ASKING FOR PARTNERSHIP BEFORE MAKING ANOTHER STEP FOR THIS RESOLUTION. THAT WOULD BE MY COMMENTS.
>> I AGREE WITH TRUSTEE GRANT DON'T WANT YOU TO DO THIS AS ANY KIND OF DISRESPECT WE WANT TO LEARN MORE BUT THANK YOU WE APPRECIATE YOUR TIME. I KNOW I WILL I WILL MAKE THE BOARD MEETING TOMORROW BECAUSE THIS ONE IS RUNNING TOO LONG. TRUSTEE MORA.
>> JUST TO DO THE APPRECIATION FOR TAKING THE TIME TO COME OUT HERE.
AND ALSO MORE TIME FOR ALL OF US TO WORK WITH YOU ON THIS WOULD BE HELPFUL AND I KNOW THAT WAS RECOGNIZED BUT WE I WILL USE I STATEMENTS LEARNING ABOUT A LOT OF THIS HISTORY IS NOT LOST ON ME THAT WE HAVE A HUGE SIKH POPULATION IN A NATOMAS BE INTERESTING TO SEE HOW WE CONTINUE TO WORK WITH GROUPS THAT REPRESENT THEM, AS WELL.O THAT WE CAN I WILL BE VERY STRONG LIVES OF THIS FOR THE COMMUNITY SO I HOPE THAT THAT'S CLEAR AND YEAH THAT'S THAT FOR TONIGHT, AT LEAST THE BEST KEYWORD FOR TONIGHT.
>> I'M JUST GOING TO DITTO WHAT MY FELLOW TRUSTEES SET UP THERE WE VALUE WORKING WITH YOU.
AND NO IN THE PAST WE'VE WORKED WITH OTHER INDIVIDUALS GETTING FEEDBACK ON RESOLUTIONS AND SO I HOPE YOU WOULD UNDERSTAND WE ARE OPEN-MINDED BUT WE DID WE ARE COLLECTIVELY ASKING FOR WE ARE NOT WHEN JUSTIN I WOULD USE TO COME TO CONCLUSION WITHOUT A LOT OF THOUGHT AND A LOT OF STUDY AND A LOT OF KNOWLEDGE BEHIND ISSUES THAT ARE ON ITEMS THAT ON OUR AGENDA SO I HOPE YOU CAN RESPECT THAT AND JUST AS WE CAN WORKING WITH YOU. HANK OU.
>> FOR THAT COULD YOU PLEASE. OKAY SECOND BY A STUDENT OR MEMBER GOMEZ.
>> GRANT, HARDEN, HEREDIA, MOR , GOMEZ.

>> OKAY I THINK I'M ON THE RIGHT POINT. MY NAME IS GIOVANNA I WANTED TO MENTION THE MONTH OF OCTOBER IS NATIONAL BULLYING AWARENESS MONTH.
I'M HERE TO ADDRESS SAFETY ISSUES WITHIN THE DISTRICT HAVE ZERO TOLERANCE FOR BULLYING YET TENS OF KIDS ARE EXPERIENCING BULLYING AND WHEN YOU TRUSTED WITH ADMIN THEY TELL YOU THEY WILL TAKE CARE OF IT BUT THEY DON'T. AND THE BULLYING PERSISTS.
AS A COMMUNITY AND THEIR CHILDREN LACK SUPPORT FROM ADMIN, SITE SUPPORT RESPONSE TIME ISN'T TIMELY THERE'S A VIDEO THAT HAS SERVICE OF MY DAUGHTER BEING ATTACKED BY A GIRL WE DEGREES IN HER AND THE STAFF JUST SITTING IN THE BACKGROUND THIS IS BECAUSE MY DAUGHTER NOT TO HEAL PROPERLY FROM HER CONCUSSION CONTINUALLY CONTINUOUSLY ANGUISH FROM MY DAUGHTER TO DO THE CYBER BULLYING. MY DAUGHTER HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH A CONCUSSION A LITTLE BOY SHOWED MY SIXTH GRADE DAUGHTER HIS PENIS DURING CLASS TIME NOTHING WAS DONE BECAUSE HE KEEPS BOTHERING MY DAUGHTER. SPECIAL EDUCATION IS UNDERSTAFFED BECAUSE THERE'S A SPECIAL KID RUNNING INTO THE KINDERGARTEN AND FIRST GRADE AND SECOND. BATHROOM WITH HIS PANTS DOWN SHOWING HIS PENIS AND WHEN YOU TELL STAFF AND ADAMANT ABOUT THAT THE RESPONSE WAS, OH, IT'S OKAY THAT'S ONE OF OUR KIDS WAY TO PROTECT OUR KIDS. WITH TAXPAYER MONEY. MY KIDS FEEL UNSAFE ON SCHOOL GROUNDS WITH A CONSISTENT TAUNTING, HARASSING AND PULLING AT A LITTLE THREATENED ME ON SCHOOL GROUNDS STATING HER MOM WAS GOING TO BE THE UP. ALSO, I AM REQUESTING THE ORIGINAL VIDEO OF MY DAUGHTER BEING ATTACKED. UNDER THE CALIFORNIA PUBLIC RECORDS ACT THAT I'VE ALREADY REQUESTED ON 11-3-23, THANK YOU.
>> THANK YOU SO PRESIDENT HEREDIA STEPPED AWAY OR JUST CANNOT WAIT FOR HER FOR THE REMAINDR OF THE MEETING. NEXT WE HAVE SEAN TATE WASH.
>> GOOD EVENING AND THANK YOU ALL FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE HERE TONIGHT.
I COME TO YOU STANDING HERE IN MY MOST HUMBLE AND VULNERABLE STATE IS SEEN HERE WEARING SEVERAL HATS TONIGHT REPRESENT THE HOMELESS AS A MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONAL AND RECOGNIZE AS A FAMILY MEMBER OF KALON FOOTMEN I'M SURE YOU KNOW THIS CASE WELL TO NOT DISCUSS EVENTS BUT I WILL DISCUSS IS ONE MESSAGE THAT SEEMS TO PERSIST WILL SITUATION OVER THE EDGE AND THAT IS WHEN KALON SYMPTOM MESSAGE I KNOW THAT THIS WORK CAN BE SCARY MAYBE LEGALLY YOU GUYS HAD TO REPORT HER TO THE AUTHORITIES I WANT TAKE THAT FROM YOU ALL.
BUT WHAT HAS YET TO BE DISCUSSED IS THE FACT THAT KAYLIN WANTED TO SEEK HELP FROM THE MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONAL AND WAS DENIED ACCESS BY THE PRINCIPAL AND DISCRIMINATE AGAINST THROUGHOUT HER TIME THERE. WHEN KAYLIN ASKED THE POSSIBLE TO LEAVE THE ROOM KAYLIN I'M SORRY THE PRINCIPAL IGNORED THE REQUEST VIOLATING CONFIDENTIALITY AND ESCALATING THE SITUATION. THEN KAYLIN WAS KICKED OFF CAMPUS IN THE MOST EMBARRASSING WAY POSSIBLE IN FRONT OF STAFF AND STUDENTS.
THIS MADE KAYLIN EXPENSING OF MENTAL CRISIS EXPENSE AND LACK OF SLEEP, NOT EATING AND CLEARLY NOT IN HER RIGHT MIND. IF KAYLIN TRULY WANTED TO HARM THE PENCIL OR OTHER INDIVIDUALS SHOULD NOTHING BUT THE SPACE AND OPPORTUNITY TO DO SO OVER THOSE SEVERAL DAYS THAT SHE WAS IN A HOME BUT INSTEAD SHE DECIDED TO CREATE A SAFE SPACE IN HER HOME AND LEANED ON HER FAMILY SINCE SCHOOL DID NOT HURT ALLOW THAT SUPPORT. KAYLIN HAS BEEN AN EDUCATOR FOR
[02:30:06]
OVER FIVE YEARS AND HAS BEEN AN IMPACTFUL PERSON IN THE LIVES OF THE KIDS SHE IS SERVED.I SAY THIS TO SAY BECAUSE IT WAS SAID THAT TRAN SIX. THE STUDENTS ON CAMPUS AND I CAN SAY FOR CERTAIN HE WOULD NEVER SHE WOULD NEVER HARM ANY CHILD.
WHEN I THINK OF THE SCHOOL SYSTEM AND THINK OF A SAFE SPACE , I'M SORRY, BUT I THINK OF A SAFE SPACE WITH THE STAFF ARE SUPPOSED TO LOOK AFTER THE STUDENTS MOST IMPORTANT AFTER THEIR COLLEAGUES BY PRESSING CHARGES AND FOLLOWING THROUGH THIS YOU GUYS ARE SHOWING KAYLIN YOU IS TO NOT HAVE HER BACK.
>> I UNDERSTAND ONE SECOND I WILL LEAVE YOU ALL WITH THIS QUESTION IF KAYLIN WAS ALLOWED THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE ABLE TO THE ON CAMPUS MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONAL WOULD WE BE HERE IN THIS CASE?
>> THANK YOU FOR THE COMMENTS.
>> HELLO GOOD EVENING MY NAME IS SHINT YA. THE EVENING I WANTED TO SPEAK REALLY QUICKLY ABOUT AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS AND SPECIFICALLY FREEDOM SCHOOL.
AS IT ADDRESSES THE URGENCY TO IMPROVE LITERACY RATES FOR AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENTS.
WE HAVE BEEN ADVOCATING SINCE JUNE AND NOW THE NUSD EXECUTIVES ARE ASKING FOR FREEDOM SCHOOL MEDIA EDUCATION INITIATIVE TO BE PASSED WHEN WE BEEN ASKING FOR FREEDOM SCHOOL SINCE JUNE AND WE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY FOR THEM TO KEEP THEIR STAFF SO THAT IT COULD BE PROVIDED RIGHT NOW BUT WE ARE GETTING SOMETHING ELSE. IT'S A SLAP IN THE FACE AT THIS POINT IT'S A FORM OF MICRO-AGGRESSION AND FULL-BLOWN RACISM BECAUSE IT'S DENYING STUDENTS AND PARENTS THEIR CIVIL RIGHTS OF HAVING EQUITY IN EDUCATION.
WE HAVE TO UNDERSTAND THAT RACISM IS ONE-SIDED AND OFTEN MEANS THAT ONE GROUP IS NOT HAVING ACCESS TO SOMETHING THAT EVERYONE ELSE IN THIS COUNTRY HAS BY THE CONSTITUTION.
I AM NOT SURE WHAT IS GOING ON OR WHY THIS IS HAPPENING THAT WE ARE SAYING SPECIFICALLY THIS IS WHAT WE NEED WE HAVE GIVEN YOU THE INFORMATION FROM THE PARENTS WHO ARE SAYING THIS IS WHAT THEY WANT. FREEDOM THE FREEDOM SOLD MEDIA INITIATIVE DOES NOT DEAL WITH THE LITERACY RATE IT'S GREAT FOR WHATEVER IT DOES I'M NOT SAYING DON'T HAVE IT I DO WANT TO HAVE IT BUT WHY AM I HAVING TO COME BACK HERE? IF MY TAX DOLLARS ARE GOING HERE WHY AM I HAVING TO COME BACK NOW FOR SIX MONTHS NOW TO ASK AND EVERYTHING IS ALREADY IN PLACE? FREEDOM SCHOOL HAS ALREADY BEEN APPROVED WE WERE TOLD YOU GUYS WERE NOT CAN PUT ANYTHING ON THE TABLE FOR AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMSNOW THERE'S LIKE THREE , THREE DIFFERENT NEW PROGRAMS AND NOTHING IS FREEDOM SCHOOL.
>> THE LAST SPEAKER HAVE A CARD FOR HIS BAG, MEG WHITE. GO AHEAD WE WILL START THE
LIGHT. >> AS A CONCERNED COMMUNITY MEMBERS HAVE CALLED AND EMAILED HOPING TO GET MORE INFORMATION ON HOW THE SECONDARY TEACHER IN A MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS LANDED IN JAIL TO THE POLICIES OF AND OR STAFF AND NATOMAS UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT. IT'S UNFORTUNATE THAT ALL ATTEMPTS WERE IGNORED.
MR. KAYLIN FOOTMAN SHOWED UP YEARS TO PROTECT THE CHILDREN WHEN SHE STARTED TO SHOW SIGNS OF MENTAL DISTRESS HOW DO WE SHOW OUR APPRECIATION FOR ALL OF HER HARD WORK WITH A JAIL CELL. WITH DEEP CUTS ON HER HANDS, KNEES AND FEET WITH PARTS OF HER NAIL HEADS BEING RIPPED OUT. WITH DAYS BEING LOCKED AWAY WITHOUT ACCESS TO HER FRIENDS FAMILY OR ATTORNEY. THERE ARE 16 TIMES MORE LIKELY TO BE KILLED BY POLICE THE ACTIONS TAKEN BY NATOMAS UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT PUT MS. BLEVINS FOOTMAN'S LIFE IN DANGER. TO DENY MEDICAL ATTENTION TO STAFF OR THE PRINCIPAL AND OTHER SCHOOL EMPLOYEES VIOLATED POLICIES AS A TRIGGER EDUCATION. OUR SCHOOLS WOULD'VE EXPECTED FOR THE STUDENTS? HERE TONIGHT TO ASK THAT THE NATOMAS UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT CONTACT THE DA AND REQUEST THAT ALL CHARGES AGAINST MS. FOOTMAN HE DROPPED. ALMOST HERE TO ENCOURAGE NUSD
[02:35:02]
