WE WOULD LIKE TO THANK OUR COUNSELORS, ASSISTING SENIORS IN THE COLLEGE PROCESS. THANK YOU. [X.b. Board Members] >> ALL RIGHT. BOARD MEMBER, TRUSTEE GRANT? >> IT IS HARD TO FOLLOW A REPORT FROM OUR TRUSTEE STUDENT BOARD MEMBER. I WILL KEEP COMMENTS BRIEF THIS EVENING. I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY EARLIER THIS WEEK TO VISIT THE BLACK STUDENT UNION. MR. WALKER. I WANT TO GIVE THEM A SHOUT-OUT FOR THE INCREDIBLE WORK HE IS DOING OVER THERE AT THE STUDENT UNION. WE TALKED ABOUT DOUBLE CONSCIOUSNESS. WE SPEAK A LOT ABOUT IT HERE ON THE BOARD. VERY RECEPTIVE STUDENTS WHO ARE GOING TO BE C.E.O.'S AND SUPERINTENDENTS SOME DAY. ALL RIGHT. THAT IS IT. >> THANK YOU. TRUSTEE HARDEN? >> I ALSO HAD THE OPPORTUNITY ON A DIFFERENT DATE TO ATTEND THE GUEST SPEAKER EVENT. AND TO SAY THAT MR. WALKER IS DOING ANYTHING LESS BUT A FINE JOB... FOR SEVERAL YEARS (INAUDIBLE) THANK YOU TO THOSE STUDENTS. THEY WERE AMAYING. THEY TAUGHT ME SOMETHING. I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING THEM AGAIN SOON. I ALSO HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO ATTEND THE TWO SUPERINTENDENT SEARCHES THAT WERE HELD FOR STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENTS. THAT WAS GREAT TO SEE. I HAVE ACCOMPLISHED AND COMPLETED A GREAT SERVICE, TRAINING, AND NEW TRUSTEE ORIENTATION AGAIN. THANK YOU. >> THANK YOU. TRUSTEE MORA? >> THANK YOU. WELL, FIRST, I KNOW WE WILL GET A CHANCE TO DO THIS LATER, BUT CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE STAFF OF THE YEAR. I'M GOING TO TRY TO KEEP THIS BRIEF. I HAD THE CHANCE TO VISIT A NUMBER OF SCHOOLS, THREE SCHOOLS, TO BE SPECIFIC. AMERICAN LAKES SCHOOL, TWO RIVERS ELEMENTARY AND LEROY GREENE ACADEMY. I GOT TO SEE OUR STUDENS ACROSS DIFFERENT GRADE LEVELS, DIFFERENT AGES. OUR TEACHERS AND STAFF DURING THE SCHOOL DAY ITSELF. WHICH I REALLY WANTED TO HAVE A CLANS TO DO. AND THANKS TO SARAH FOR SCHEDULING THOSE VISITS. I KNOW IT IS A LOT OF WORK TO GET EVERYBODY'S CALENDARS IN ORDER. I NEVER TAKE THAT FOR GRANTED. THANKS TO ALL THE TEACHERS THAT I GOT TO MEET DURING THEIR PREP SESSIONS, AND JUST GET A LITTLE GLIMPSE FOR ALL THE COLLABORATIVE WORK THAT GOES ON TOGETHER. THE LAST PIECE OF THANKS BEFORE I SHARE A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE VISITS, WHAT THEY REALLY LOOK LIKE, THANKS TO ALL THE PRINCIPALS. PRINCIPALS RODRIGUEZ, PERRY, AND CENINO. AND ANGELA HERRERA AND CORY BUCKMASTER FOR HELPING WITH THE WALK-THROUGHS. NOW I WANT TO SHARE LITTLE TINY BIT ABOUT KIND OF WHAT THINGS I WAS ABLE TO SEE. SOME OF THEM WERE FAMILIAR. SO INCLUDING THE THINGS THAT YOU COULD PROBABLY THINK OF WHEN WALKING THROUGH CLASSROOMS. THEN SOME OF THEM WERE NEW TO ME. GOT TO SEE SOME OF THE STUDENTS STARTING THE CLASS WITH YOGA WHICH I WOULD HAVE NEVER IMAGINED. THAT WAS REALLY GREAT TO SEE. I KIND OF WANTED TO JOIN: THE MATS WEREN'T BIG ENOUGH. I SAW SOME OF THE STUDENTS IN THE CLASSROOMS. TEKA IS NEW TO ME. STUDENTS ENJOYING MATH. THAT WAS NEW TO ME. MAYBE I'M PROJECTING. AND THEN STUDENTS TAKING HOME JOURNALS FOR READING COMP HE HEDGES... COMPREHENSION AND FOR WAYS FOR THEIR PARENTS TO ENGAGE [00:10:03] WITH THEM AT HOME. I THOUGHT THAT WAS REALLY NICE. I GOT TO HOLD ONE OF THE JOURNALS AND READ THROUGH IT. THERE IS NOTHING LIKE A REAL-LIFE EXAMPLE FOR ALL OF THIS INFORMATION THAT WE GET HERE. LASTLY, I SAID I WAS GOING TO BRAG ABOUT THIS, SO NOW I AM. LGA HAS A KILN FOR CERAMICS WHICH, OF COURSE, LEADS TO JUST A LOT OF ENRICHMENT FOR ALL THE ARTS THAT ARE HAPPENING. THEN I'LL END WITH THIS. STUDENTS PLAYING SPORTS REMINDED ME OF MY TIME PLAYING DEFENSE AT JEFFERSON EL MENRY THE. ELEMENTARY. AND THEN STUDENTS BREAKING OUT INTO SONG. AS YOU CAN TELL, AN OVERALL GREAT TIME. I LOOK FORWARD TO MORE SCHOOL SITE VISITS. THIS IS A LITTLE BIT OF WHAT I WANTED TO SHARE WITH EVERYONE. THANK YOU. >> THANK YOU. >> TRUSTEE QUIRALTE? >> THANK YOU. I GOT TO HEAR DIVERSITY COMPLAINTS. IT WAS INCREDIBLY INSIGHTFUL. THEY WERE HANDING OUT COFFEE AND SNACKS TO PARENTS, COMING IN AND OUT OF THE SCHOOL. IT WAS WONDERFUL TO SEE OUR STAFF GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND. THE TEAM DOES A GREAT JOB WITH THAT. PARENTS VERY MUCH APPRECIATED THAT CUP OF COFFEE AND THAT WARM HANDOFF IN THE MORNING. THANK YOU TO THEM. I ALSO WAS ABLE TO CONNECT WITH THE CROSSING GUARD AT H. ALLEN HIGHT. HER NAME IS JAZZY. SHE DOES EVERY SINGLE DAY HELPING OUR KIDS CROSS THE SIDEWALKS. SHE DOES SO WITH A SMILE ON HER FACE. IT IS REALLY IMPORTANT FOR ME TO CALL OUT PEOPLE DOING THE RIGHT THING EVERY SINGLE DAY. I WANTED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE HARD WORK THAT SHE DOES. I ALSO ENCOURAGE MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY TO ATTEND THE UPCOMING SESSIONS. WE ALSO HAVE SESSIONS AND SURVYING AVAILABLE IN SPANISH. WE CAN RECEIVE MAXIMUM PARTICIPATION IN RECEIVING INPUT. ALSO ON ANOTHER NOTE, I WAS ABLE TO VOLUNTEER IN MY DAUGHTER'S CLASSROOM AS JUST BEING THERE AS A MOM. SHE WAS STAR STUDENT OF THE WEEK. I WAS ABLE TO SEE CLASSROOMS FIRSTHAND. KINDERGARTEN AS WELL AS SEEING THE LUNCHTIME ROUTINE. OUR JANITORS ARE INCREDIBLE. THEY DID A GREAT JOB CLEANING UP THE MILK THAT SPILLED ON THE FLOOR, THE FOOD THAT IS DROPPED ON THE COUNTER. I WANTED TO GIVE THEM A QUICK SHOUT-OUT AS WELL AS TO OUR CAFETERIA LADIES WHO HELP SIGNIFICANTLY WITH OUR YOUTH ON CAMPUS. THAT CONCLUDES MY REPORT. >> I'M GLAD THAT PEOPLE ARE GETTING OUT INTO THE SCHOOLS AND THE CLASSROOMS. IT IS EXCITING WHEN YOU WALK. IN I ALWAYS SAY THAT IF YOU HAVE A LOT OF PROBLEMS, IT IS EXCITING. I WAS ABLE TO SPEND A COUPLELE OF DAYS IN CLASSROOMS, BUT IN ANOTHER ROLE THROUGH THE CSBA, I VISITED CLASSROOMS IN COMPTON, ONE OF MY FIRST CHOICES. AND ALSO ANOTHER AREA THAT WAS VERY SIMILAR. I CHOSE THOSE SCHOOLS BECAUSE I THINK WE HAVE IMAGES OF WHAT THE SCHOOLS ARE LIKE IN LOW-PERFORMING, YOU KNOW, LOW-PERFORMING SCHOOLS, UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES. I WANTED TO GO AND SEE FIRSTHAND WHAT SOME THINGS THAT... YOU KNOW, THEY WERE DOING TO HELP ADVANCE EDUCATION LITERACY AND MATH AND JUST ALL AROUND. I WAS REALLY IMPRESSED WITH EVERYTHING I SAW. LOTS OF LITERACY. LOTS OF MATH. I VISITED THE FIFTH GRADE DUAL IMMERSION CLASSROOM. I WATCHED THEM DO SOME MATH. THEY WERE SO KIND. THEY DIDN'T CORRECT ME. I PARTICIPATED IN THERE. I USED A WRONG WORD. WHEN I LISTENED TO THEM, THEY USED THE RIGHT WORD. IT WAS KIND OF LIKE MY CLUE THAT I DIDN'T USE THE RIGHT WORD. FOR A DIVISION OF A PIZZA. BUT ANYWAY, I THOUGHT THEY HAD SUCH CLASS. BUT YOU KNOW, I WALKED SOME NEIGHBORHOODS. I SPENT TIME WITH PRINCIPALS. EVERY TIME I GO ON A VISIT OUTSIDE THIS DISTRICT, I AM... I'M REMINDED OF HOW GRATEFUL I AM FOR WORKING IN THIS DISTRICT. FOR SERVING IN THIS DISTRICT. BECAUSE WE WORK REALLY HARD TO BRING ABOUT CHANGE IN THIS DISTRICT. WE WORK REALLY HARD TO BRING ABOUT ACADEMIC SUCCESS FOR ALL OF OUR STUDENTS IN THIS DIS DISTRICT, DESPITE THEIR BACKGROUND, AND WE HAVE BEEN, YOU KNOW, VERY SUCCESSFUL ON MANY LEVELS. BUT YOU KNOW, I WANTED TO GO S [00:15:04] SEE, AS I SAID, THESE COMMUNITIES BECAUSE THEY TOO WORK VERY HARD. WITHLESS RESOURCES. LOTS OF PARENT ENGAGEMENT. LESS RESOURCES IN SOME RESPECTS. BUT THE PARENTS ARE THERE. SO RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE SCHOOLS WHICH ARE K-6, THEY HAVE THESE FAMILY CENTERS. SO THOSE WERE THE LITTLE KIDS. THE THREE-YEAR-OLDS AND, YOU KNOW, THE TK KIDS GET TO GO THERE. WHAT I CAME AWAY WITH ALSO, BESIDES SEEING ALL THE GOOD THINGS THEY WERE DOING, THE COMMENTS FROM THE PRINCIPALS. AND THE PRINCIPALS REINFORCED FOR ME ALL THE TIME... THE SUPERINTENDENT OF L.A. USD ACCOMPANIED ON THIS VISIT. THE PRINCIPAL REITERATED SOMETHING THAT HAS BEEN OFTEN SAID IN MANY SETTINGS. EDUCATIONAL SETTINGS. THAT IS THAT, YOU KNOW, WE HAVE SUCH A CHALLENGE WITH THE SOCIAL-EMOTIONALS A PECK OF WORKING WITH OUR KIDS. ONE PRINCIPAL SAID "YOU ARE NOT GOING TO SEE THE SCHOOL BRING ABOUT CHANGE IN THE FIRST YEAR OR THE SECOND YEAR. MAYBE THE THIRD YEAR OR THE FOURTH YEAR." HE SAID "MY FOCUS RIGHT NOW IS MAKING SURE THAT THESE KIDS ARE SAFE AND THAT THEY ARE HEALTHY AND THAT THEY HAVE ALL THE RESOURCES THERE IN FRONT OF THEM, BUT IT IS SUCH A CHALLENGE." ESPECIALLY IN COMMUNITIES WHERE KIDS SOMETIMES DON'T SEE ANY HOPE OF GETTING OUT OF THEIR COMMUNITY. SO I WAS... I APPRECIATED THE HONESTY FROM THE SCHOOL SITE PRINCIPALS. THE PRINCIPALS WERE VERY DEDICATED: ONE OF THEM HAD GROWN UP IN THE COMMUNITY AND THEN CAME BACK. THE PRINCIPAL WHO WALKS THE COMMUNITY, LOOKS FOR THINGS L LIKE, YOU KNOW, THERE WAS A HOLE IN THE GROUND. KIDS COULD HAVE FALLEN IN THERE. I MEAN, JUST LITTLE THINGS LIKE THAT. YOU KNOW, THEY ARE VERY, VERY ENGAGED. SO YOU KNOW, I CAME AWAY WITH A LOT OF APPRECIATION, AS I ALWAYS DO HERE FOR THE HARD WORK AND THE EFFORTS ON BEHALF OF THE PRINCIPALS IN THE NATOMAS UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT AND ALL OVER THE STATE. AND THE TEACHERS DAY AFTER DAY WHO GIVE SO MUCH OF THEIR TIME. SO ANYWAY, I HAD A GREAT TIME. I KNOW I'M GOING TO BE HAVING MORE CONVERSATIONS ABOUT MY VISIT WITH TRUSTEE GRANT. YOU KNOW, I MADE THIS PLEDGE THAT I WOULD GET THERE. I'M NOT DONE YET. VISITING. ANYWAY, THAT WAS THE MAJOR HIGHLIGHT OF MY TOUR OF THE SCHOOLS. SO THANK YOU. [X.c. Superintendent's Report] >> YES. THANK YOU. I HAVEN'T SPOKEN IN A WHILE. INDERKUM BASKETBALL TONIGHT, RIGHT, SCOTT? IS SCOTT HIDING SOMEWHERE IN. >> YES. >> HE IS OUTSIDE. BEST WISHES TO INDERKUM MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM WHO TIP IN 42 MINUTES HERE. WE HAVE A TALL ENDED TIGER TEAM. THEY HAD A TOUGH SEMIFINAL DRAW. YOU KNOW, THAT IS GOING TO BE A GOOD GAME. IF I DISAPPEAR FOR A BRIEF PERIOD OF TIME AND YOU NEED ME, YOU MIGHT WANT TO CHECK THE GYM. I REALLY LOOK FORWARD TO ATTENDING THE BLACK EXCELLENCE AWARDS. I APPRECIATE THE INVITE. THERE WERE SOME NICE THINGS SAID ABOUT MR. WALKER AND SOME THINGS HAPPENING AT NATOMAS HIGH SCHOOL. I AGREE COMPLETELY. I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING SOME OF OUR STUDENTS AND BEING RECOGNIZED FOR SOME OF THE GOOD WORK AND THE EFFORTS TO HAVE THEM PLACE. I HOPE YOU ALL HEARD THE REPEAT COMMENTS AROUND THE TRUSTEE COMMUNICATION. IT IS REALLY NICE TO HAVE TRUSTEES THAT ARE VISITING SCHOOLS AND ATTENDING EVENTS. THAT KIND OF ENGAGEMENT MATTERS IN MORE WAYS THAN YOU ALL KNOW. AND IT IS REALLY IMPORTANT. NOT JUST FOR YOU AS YOU SHARE IT HERE, BUT PEOPLE SEE YOU, THEY RECOGNIZE YOU ARE OUT AND ABOUT. IT MATTERS TO LEADERSHIP. LEADERSHIP STARTS AT THE TOP. ON MANY ISSUES, YOU ARE THE TOP. THIS IS GREAT. PLEASE KEEP THAT UP. THAT IS EXCELLENT. HELLO TO THE PRINCIPALS AGAIN. I THINK A BUNCH OF THEM ARE IN THE HALLWAY MAKING SURE THAT OUR EMPLOYEES AND FAMILIES HAVE SEATS. I WANTED TO THANK THEM. HOPEFULLY, THERE IS A TV OUT THERE SO THEY CAN HEAR. WE RECOGNIZE THIS IS THE SECOND NIGHT. TWO MORE NIGHTS IN THE LAST TWO WEEKS THAT THEY HAVE BEEN OUT AND ABOUT AND AWAY FROM FAMILY AND DOING EXTRA WORK. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. AS I SAID A FEW COMMENTS AGO, WE HAVE A VERY INVOLVED BOARD WHO WANTS TO HEAR FROM YOU DIRECTLY. THEY DON'T WANT THE INFORMATION FILTERED. THEY WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU. THEY WANT TO HEAR WHAT'S GOING ON. THEY WANT TO HEAR WHAT'S HAPPENING AT OUR SCHOOLS. THIS IS SOMETHING THEY HAVE LOOKED FORWARD TO ON AND OFF FOR YEARS AND THE PANDEMIC TOOK IT AWAY FROM THEM FOR A WHILE. IT IS BACK. THE LAST ONE WAS VERY SUCCESSFUL. WE ARE HOPING TONIGHT CONTINUES. THEN SOMETHING THAT HAS BEEN-- I KNOW OUR COMMUNITY HAS WANTED TTHIS FOR A LONG TIME. IT IS NOT GOING TO LAND IN THE EXACT WAY THAT MAYBE WE ALL WOULD HOPE THAT HOPEFULLY IN THE FUTURE IT WILL BE. OUR GOVERNOR WITH THE LEGISLATURE'S HELP, PUT IN PLACE SOMETHING WE CALLED EXTENDED LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES. [00:20:01] BASICALLY, EXTENDING FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND MAYBE SOME MIDDLE SCHOOL. PRIMARILY, ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. AFTER-SCHOOL LEARNING AND WE HAVE PUT A PROGRAM IN PLACE. WE ARE PILOTING IT NOW AND LOOKING TO EXPAND AS THE MONEY COMES. IN WE DO MORE PLANNING CALLED LEAP. FOR YEARS, WE HAVE TRIED TO INFUSE MORE ART INTO OUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS. THE PUSH AND PULL OF THE CURRENT TIME WE HAVE WITH OUR INSTRUCTIONAL DAY AND THE IMPORTANCE OF STUDENTS BEING ABLE TO HAVE STRONG LITERACY AND MATHEMATIC SUCCESS, LEAP IS GOING TO ALLOW US THROUGH AN EXTENDED DAY PROGRAM, TO BRING A VARIETY OF THINGS IN PLACE, INCLUDING MORE ART. IN FACT, TONJA AND BILL, YOU GOT THE INVITE. >> YOU DIDN'T, SEE YOU TOMORROW. WE WILL MEET WITH ONE RELATED GROUP AS WELL AS OTHERS ARE IN PLACE. THERE IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO USE THIS MONEY THAT THE STATE HAS GIVEN US TO BRING ART TO AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS AS AN IMPORTANT PART OF LEARNING BECAUSE ART IS ESSENTIAL. THE PUSH-PULL OF OUR STRATEGIC PLAN AND DISCUSSIONS AROUND NEGOTIATIONS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN WHY CAN'T WE DO IT ALL INSTEAD OF GIVING UP WRITING TIME OR READING TIME OR MATH TIME? AND IT VERY WELL MAY BE THAT THE GOVERNOR AND LEGISLATURE HAVE GIVEN US AN OPPORTUNITY. IT IS NOT ALL ART. THERE ARE ELEMENTS OF ART WE WILL BE ABLE TO BRING IN. AFTER 11 YEARS, I'LL BE REALLY EXCITED TO SEE THAT EMBED ITSELF. THEN EVENTUALLY, MAYBE IT WOULD BE A WAY THAT WE DO THINGS AS LONG AS THAT EXTRA FUNDING COMES INTO PLACE. I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO TOMORROW'S MEETING. HOPEFULLY, IN THE NEXT FEW MONTHS, WE WILL BE ABLE TO SEE HOW ART HAS FOUND ITS WAY MORE CONSISTENTLY INTO OUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS. [XI.a. AYE. >> QUIRALTE? >> AYE. >> ALL RIGHT. MOTION CARRIES 6-0. MOVING ON TO THE BOARD REPORT. THIS IS ITEM 14-A. CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM UPDATE, AND THIS WAS PUBLISHED ON FRIDAY THE 17TH OF FEBRUARY. THERE IS NO PRESENTATION ON THIS. IT WAS A BOARD REPORT. ANY COMMENTS? ANY QUESTIONS? >> GREAT REPORT. I THINK IT LAYS OUT THE CHALLENGES WE DO HAVE. WE HAVE A GREAT C.T. PROGRAM. THERE ARE SOME CHALLENGES, PARTICULARLY, WITH RETENTION IN TEACHERS. THAT IS SOMETHING WE NEED TO LOOK AT. ALSO, GREAT WORK TO OUR TEAMS TO SECURE A LOT OF THOSE GRANTS THAT KEEP THOSE THINGS FUNDED. >> YEAH. I JUST THINK IT IS SO IMPRESSIVE THAT THE NUMBER OF CTE PROGRAMS WE HAVE IN THIS DISTRICT-- I APPRECIATE ALL THE HARD WORK. I MEAN, I'M GOING TO BE SEEING A COUPLE OF THEM, I THINK, WITH. A DISBLVMENT TWO FRIDAYS, I THINK IT IS, RIGHT? WE WILL BE THERE. REALLY, REALLY IMPRESSED. [XV.a. Learning Recovery Phase 2 Board Study Session: Secondary Schools] OKAY. MOVING ON TO OUR STUDY SESSION. THIS IS NOW WHERE IT IS GOING TO BE REALLY FUN. WE GET TO INTERACT WITH THE PRINCIPALS AND HEAR ABOUT THEIR WORK AT THE SCHOOLS. I'M GOING TO TURN THIS OVER TO ANGELA HERRERA, IF, OUR CHIEF ACADEMIC OFFICER. >> GOOD EVENING. YOU MAY FEEL LIKE YOU ARE EXPERIENCING A LITTLE DEJA VU. YOU ARE GOING TO SEE BASICALLY THE SAME SLIDES WE PRESENTED TWO WEEKS AGO BUT IN THE INTEREST OF SHARING WITH THE PUBLIC, I WILL QUICKLY SHOW THE SLIDES AS WE ARE PREPARING OUR STATIONS FOR OUR PRINCIPALS. SO AS A PART OF OUR WORK, WE WANT TO PROVIDE A BRIEF UPDATE [00:35:05] TO TRUSTEES ABOUT THE WORK THAT WE HAVE DONE SINCE WE STARTED OUR ORIGINAL 18-MONTH PLAN. NOW THAT WE HAVE MOVED ON TO PHASE TWO, OF OUR LEARNING RECOVERY. AND THEN YOU WILL GET TO TALK WITH OUR PRINCIPALS, WHICH I THINK YOU WILL ENJOY A. WE TALKED ABOUT THE DPR, THE DISTRICT PROGRESS REPORT IN JANUARY, 2023. WE TALKED ABOUT THE STATUS OF THE METRICS THAT THE BOARD HAS APPROVED IN PAST YEARS FOR US TO BE REPORTING OUT ON. AND THESE ARE A SNAP SHOT IN TIME. THEY ARE A PART OF OUR WORK USING MULTIPLE MEASURES TO TALK ABOUT WHERE OUR SITES AND OUR STUDENTS ARE AT WITH THEIR WORK. SO WE HAD AN 18-MONTH PLAN TO START. AS WE WERE COPPING OUT OF THE PANDEMIC, WE RECOGNIZED THERE WERE SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL SUPPORTS, PHYSICAL HEALTH NEEDS AND ACADEMIC NEEDS OUR STUDENTS WERE GOING TO HAVE COMING OUT OF THE PANDEMIC THERE. HAS BEEN SIGNIFICANT INVESTMENT FROM U.S. TRUSTEES, AS YOU ARE WELL AWARE OF. IN NOVEMBER, YOU IDENTIFIED AND ALLOCATED FUNDS TO OUR SITES THAT THEY COULD USE TO IMPLEMENT PROGRAMS AND INITIATIVES AT THE SITE LEVEL. TO SUPPORT LEARNING RECOVERY AND OUR WRITING WORK. SO THIS IS JUST A REMINDER FOR THE PUBLIC OF THE INVESTMENT THAT TRUSTEES APPROVED. AND WHAT WE WERE GOING TO WALK THROUGH AGAIN TONIGHT AS YOU SAW BEFORE IS OUR CCLI PROCESS. THEY ARE GOING TO GO DEEPLY TALKING ABOUT ONE ACTION THAT THE SITE IS TAKING FROM PLANNING ALL THE WAY THROUGH MONITORING AND ADJUSTING TO BEGIN THAT CYCLE AGAIN. YOU WILL HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TONIGHT TO TALK WITH OUR PRINCIPALS. LAST TIME THERE WERE TEN ELEMENTARY K-8 PRINCIPALS AT FIVE STATIONS. TONIGHT IT IS FIVE PRINCIPALS. ONE AT'M OF FIVE STATIONS. WE ARE REDUCING THE AMOUNT OF TIME BEFORE IT WAS 7 MINUTES A STATION. WE ARE GOING TO GIVE A LITTLE CHIME, A SINGLE CHIME AT FOUR MINUTES. WE WILL GAUGE WHERE TRUSTEES ARE AT IN THEIR CONVERSATION. IT IS ONCE PRINCIPAL THIS TIME. LAST TIME, TH THERE WAS MORE IN THAT GROUP. YUP. WE ARE LOOKING AT FIVE MINUTES TO START. YOU KNOW, WE CAN ADJUST AS WE GO. LIKE I SAID, WE WILL DO A WARNING CHIME. A MINUTE LATER, WE WILL LET YOU KNOW WE ARE GOING TO BE ROTATING. >> YOU CAN MAKE YOUR WAY DOWN TO THE STATIONS WITH OUR PRINCIPALS. THERE IS A MAP THAT IDENTIFIES SITES. YOU EACH WILL PICK A DIFFERENT STATION. THEN WE WILL ROTATE. [01:05:58] >> ALL RIGHT. THAT IS OUR FINAL ROTATION. [01:06:12] IF I COULD HAVE TRUSTEES START MAKING THEIR WAY BACK UP TO [01:06:16] THEIR SEATS, PLEASE. >> ALL RIGHT. [01:06:49] WE ARE GOING TO JUST CIRCLE BACK UP TOGETHER TO HAVE A BRIEF [01:06:54] CONVERSATION BEFORE WE WRAP UP THIS ITEM. [01:07:09] FIRST OF ALL, THANK YOU TO OUR ADMINISTRATORS, AND I THINK YOU WILL NOTICE THAT OUR ELEMENTARY ADMINISTRATORS WERE HERE FOR MORAL SUPPORT FOR COLLEAGUES. THANK YOU FOR. THAT AS A REMINDER, WHAT YOU TALKED ABOUT, THEY WALKED YOU THROUGH THE CCLI PROCESS, THAT IS ONE OF THE ACTIONS BEING TAKEN AT THE SITE. LIKE WE TALKED ABOUT WITH OUR PRINCIPALLINGS, THERE ARE A VARIETY OF ACTIONS THAT SITES ARE TAKING TO INVEST IN THEIR STUDENTS' SUCCESS THROUGH LEARNING RECOVERY AND WRITING. THIS WAS JUST A GLIMPSE AT ONE. IF THERE ARE... IF THERE IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR ANY COMMENTS, QUESTIONS, AS WE ARE WRAPPING UP THIS ITEM. >> ONCE AGAIN, JOB WELL DONE. PRINCIPALS, THANK YOU SO MUCH. THIS IS SO MUCH FUN. AND SO KNOWLEDGEABLE. I HAVE TO ADMIT, THAT I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO STEALING THE SATURDAY ACADEMY. I LOVE IT. YOU GUYS HAVE SUCH GREAT THINGS GOING ON. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. THANK YOU SO MUCH. >> DITTO AS WELL. I APPRECIATE THE THOUGHTFULNESS AND HOW YOU ARE ENGAGING OUR YOUTH. AND MEETING THEM WHERE THEY ARE AND DOING SO IN A THOUGHTFUL WAY AND LOOKING AT THE OUTCOMES. RIGHT? HOW WE CAN CONTINUE TO ENGAGE THEM. WE KNOW THAT WE ARE NOT ALWAYS COURAGEOUS ENOUGH TO ASK THE QUESTIONS. I APPRECIATE THE THOUGHTFULNESS AROUND STAFF AND LEADERSHIP BEING SO INTENTIONAL ABOUT CONTINUING TO REACH THEM. REACH THEM AND BE CREATIVE. >> I'LL JUST ECHO THOSE COMMENTS. YOU KNOW, IT IS NO SECRET THE PAN DEM EX... PAN DEM INCRUSHED US. WITH PLAY A STRONG ROLE, MAKING SURE KIDS ARE AT GRADE LEVEL IN READING AND BEYOND. SO THANK YOU. IT IS AN INCREDIBLE THAT TASK. YOU ARE NOT ALONE. WE WORK FOR YOU ALL. MEASE REACH OUT AND LET US KNOW IF WE CAN SUPPLEMENT THIS WORK. VERY GRATEFUL TO HAVE SUCH INVOLVED ADMINISTRATORS AND PRINCIPALS AND ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS WHO DEDICATE THEIR LIVES TO THIS WORK. IT SHOWS IN THE RESULTS QUITE CLEARLY SO. THANK YOU. >> TRUSTEE MORA, DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING TO SAY BEFORE I... NO? OKAY. GO AHEAD. >> I'LL JUST ADD A THANK YOU ON TOP OF THAT, BUT I AGREE WITH WHAT MY FELLOW TRUSTEES SAID. >> THANK YOU. >> YEAH. JUST DITTO. I WISH WE WOULD HAVE HAD MORE TIME WITH YOU. BUT THERE IS NEVER... I KNOW. I'M LAUGHING. I'M THE ONE THAT REFUSED TO MOVE FROM HER STATION. (LAUGHTER) BUT BECAUSE THIS TIME IS VERY VALUABLE. I MEAN, YOU SET THE STAGE FOR US, FOR OUR UNDERSTANDING OF [01:10:01] WHAT'S HAPPENING AT YOUR SCHOOL SITE. AND WHEN YOU DO THAT, THEN WHEN WE GO OUT, WE KNOW WHAT TO LOOK FOR. SOME OF THE THINGS WE LOOK FOR. THAT IS SO IMPORTANT. YOU KNOW, FOR US BECAUSE WE ARE LIKE THE AMBASSADORS FOR ALL THE GREAT WORK THAT YOU ARE DOING. SO THE MORE WE KNOW, THE BETTER WE CAN ADVOCATE FOR YOU. BUT I WOULD SAY THE LAST TWO STUDY SESSIONS HAVE BEEN... I LOVE THEM. I WISH WE WOULD HAVE A CHANCE TO DO THOSE MORE OFTEN. A LOT OF LEARNING HAPPENS DURING THOSE SESSIONS. DURING THOSE ONE ON ONE. PRINCIPALS, YOU DID A GREAT JOB. YOU KNOW, ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I THINK WAS SO EVIDENT IS THAT FOR SO LONG, IT TALKS ABOUT STUDENT DATA AND DATABASE DECISIONS. AND IT IS SO CLEAR THAT IS WHAT YOU HAVE DONE. YOU HAVE LOOKED AT THE DATA. YOU KNOW, YOU HAVE COME UP WITH A PLAN. YOU REVIEW THE DATA. YOU REFLECT ON WHAT'S HAPPENING WITH THE KIDS IN THE CLASSROOM. THEN YOU GO BACK TO, YOU KNOW, REFLECT ON IT. AND THEN THERE IS AN ADJUSTMENT. YOU MOVE FORWARD AGAIN. IT IS THAT CYCLE OF CONSTANTLY REFLECTING ON WHAT YOU ARE DOING AND ADJUSTING AND MEETING. YOU KNOW, THE SATURDAY SCHOOLS, I JUST THINK THIS IS WHAT IS NICE ABOUT THIS SATURDAY. SOME OF THESE KIDS ARE ELECTING TO DO THIS. OR THEY ARE ASKING. I WANT SOME MORE, YOU KNOW, CLASSES IN THIS AREA, FOR EXAMPLE. WHETHER IT IS THE BIOLOGY-- ONE SCHOOL SITE-- I THINK IT WAS LEROY GREENE. THEY WERE EXPLAINING THAT TO ME. YOU DON'T GET THEM COMING BACK UNLESS THEY FEEL THEIR NEEDS ARE BEING MET. WHEN THE KIDS ARE COMING BACK AND YOU HAVE TO ADD MORE LINES, A PHRASE THAT I LEARNED TODAY, WHEN YOU ADD MORE LINES, THEN YOU, YOU KNOW, CAN SEE HOW KIDS FEEL LIKE THEY ARE COMFORTABLE ENOUGH. THEY FEEL LIKE SOMEONE IS LISTENING TO THEM. I JUST APPLAUD, AGAIN, ALL YOUR EFFORTS. THANK YOU SO MUCH. FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY. >> THANK YOU FOR ENGAGING WITH OUR ADMINISTRATORS. WE APPRECIATE IT. >> ALL RIGHT. YES. THANK YOU ALL. [XVI.a. Present and Approve 2023-24 Enrollment Projections and Associated Staffing Superintendent Evans Recommends Approval Doug Orr, Associate Superintendent The Board is asked to receive information on enrollment projections and approve staffing for the 2023- 24 school year.] OKAY. MOVING ON IN THE AGENDA NOW. WE ARE ON NOW ACTION ITEM 16-A. THIS IS TO PRESENT AND APPROVE THE 2023-24 ENROLLMENT PROJECTION AND ADJUSTED STAFFING. ASSOCIATE SUPERINTENDENT DOUG ORR. WELCOME TO THE PODIUM. >> THANK YOU, PRESIDENT HEREDIA, TRUSTEES, SUPERINTENDENT EVANS. I REALLY LOVE COMING TO DO. THIS I HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO THIS MAYBE TEN YEARS IN A ROW. WE START OFF OUR YEAR PLANNING FOR THE NEXT YEAR WITH THE BUDGET CYCLE. WHEN IT KICKS OFF IN THE FALL. BUT THIS IS ONE OF THE THINGS THAT REALLY SIGNIFIES A LOT OF TANGIBLE THINGS THAT START HAPPENING. JUST REALLY EXCITED. A LOT OF WORK GOES INTO THIS. TONIGHT WE ARE GOING TO LOOK AT OUR ENROLLMENT PROJECTIONS FOR NEXT YEAR. WE ARE GOING TO PRESENT SOME PRELIMINARY CERTIFICATED AND CLASSIFIED STAFFING ADJUSTMENTS FOR APPROVAL. IN ALL PAST YEARS, WE LOOK AT MULTIPLE DIFFERENT THINGS TO COME UP WITH OUR ENROLLMENTS. PROJECTIONS. WE DO ANTICIPATE GROWTH, AS YOU WILL SEE. WE TALK ABOUT THAT IN A FEW DIFFERENT WAYS. THERE IS NATOMAS UNIFIED GROWTH. AND THE COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE WHICH INCLUDES ALL OF THE CHARTERS. A LOT OF ADJUSTMENTS THIS YEAR FOR STAFFING. ESPECIALLY WITH THE TK EXPANSION THAT IS HAPPENING. WE ADDED TWO MONTHS OF ELIGIBILITY. I'LL GO INTO MORE DETAIL WITH THAT. LARRY G. MEEKS IS KIND OF SETTLING INTO A WITH ENROLLMENT AFTER THE PANDEMIC AND COVID. WE WILL GO THROUGH THOSE THINGS. IMPORTANT TO NOTE, AFTER TONIGHT IF APPROVED, THIS IS ABOUT 85% OF OUR BUDGET. THAT IS TYPICAL IN ANY GIVEN BUDGET YEAR. THAT STAFFING REPRESENTS THAT. SO JUST A QUICK OVERVIEW OF HOW STAFFING AND ENROLLMENT COMES TOGETHER. WE HAVE A THIRD PARTY VENDOR WE WORK WITH. WE HAVE BEEN WORKING WITH THEM FOR A LONG TIME. MOST SCHOOL DISTRICTS DO THIS. THEY DO THEIR OWN DEMOGRAPHIC STUDY. THEY PULL CITY BUILDING PERMITS. THEY LOOK AT ALL KINDS OF FACTORS. WE DO OUR OWN INTERNAL REPORTS, AND THEN WE COMPARE THE TWO TO SEE HOW CLOSE, HOW FAR ARE WE FROM EACH OTHER. ONCE WE DO THAT, WE DO A TREND ANALYSIS. WE ROLL UP ALL THE STUDENTS FROM ONE GRADE LEVEL TO THE NEXT. THEN WE LOOK AT WHERE WE NEED TO MAKE ADJUSTMENTS, FOR THINGS LIKE IF A GRADE LEVEL IS OPENING IN A NEW SCHOOL. THINGS LIKE. THAT THIS YEAR, WE ARE A NEW SCHOOL OPENING FOR NEXT YEAR. WE LAND ON OUR PROJECTIONS, AND THEN WE LOOK AT OUR SCHOOL SITE AND SAY OKAY, WHERE ARE THE [01:15:04] ISSUES IN WHERE MAY WE BE TIGHT IN CLASSROOMS? DO WE HAVE A CAP OR DO WE HAVE PLENTY OF ROOM TO ADD ADDITIONAL TRANSFERS AND THINGS LIKE THAT? EVERY YEAR IS DIFFERENT. LIKE I SAID, TEN YEARS NOW. EVERY SINGLE YEAR IS DIFFERENT. THERE ARE SOME THINGS THAT ARE VERY CONSISTENT. AND WE HAVE BEEN GROWING MOST OF THAT TIME. THROUGHOUT MOST OF THAT TIME. A LOT OF THAT TIME. SO LIKE I SAID, GROWTH CONT CONTINUES. YOU DRIVE AROUND NATOMAS. IT IS NOT HARD TO SEE. THERE IS CONSTRUCTION GOING ON. BOTH COMMERCIAL AND RESIDENTIAL. NOT ALL OF THAT RESIDENTIAL GROWTH IS PRODUCING STUDENTS. IT IS JUST DIFFERENT FACTORS. DEPENDING ON WHAT KIND OF HOUSING IT IS. THE ENROLLMENT HAS BEEN SO GOOD, YOU WILL SEE TONIGHT, WE WERE PLANNING ORIGINALLY TO HAVE TWO TRANSITIONAL KINDERGARTEN CLASSES. WE HAVE ENOUGH STUDENTS NOW TO OPEN A THIRD. WWE ARE PULLING STUDENTS IN OUT OF DISTRICT THROUGH TRANSFER REQUESTS AS WELL. THERE IS A LOT OF REQUESTS TO GO THERE. THERE IS A LOT OF INTEREST IN THE SCHOOL. THAT IS GREAT. LIKE I SAID, TRANSITIONAL KINDERGARTEN IS EXPANDING. WE EXPECT ABOUT 150 STUDENTS OR MORE IN TRANSITIONAL KINDERGARTEN THIS YEAR. SORRY. FOR NEXT YEAR. THAN WE HAVE CURRENTLY. AND THE OTHER THING WE TALKED ABOUT THERE WITH LARRY G. MEEKS. INDEPENDENT CHARTER SCHOOLS, WESTLAKE IS GOING UP ONE GRADE LEVEL AT THE HIGH SCHOOL. NATOMAS HAS FLAT ENROLLMENT. NP3 HAS A GRADE LEVEL GOING UP. THAT WILL CONTINUE FOR ANOTHER YEAR. ONE BIG TAKE-AWAY, YOU HEAR LOTS OF DIFFERENT NUMBERS. THINGS GET POSTED. ON SEARCHES AND OTHER STUFF. WE HAVE AT ANY GIVEN TIME, ABOUT 17,000 STUDENTS FROM PRESCHOOL ALL THE WAY THROUGH ADULT ENROLLED. WE PREDICT WE WILL SERVE ABOUT BECAUSE OVER THE COURSE OF THE YEAR, BECAUSE KIDS COME AND KIDS GO. SOMEWHERE BETWEEN 500 AND 1,000 KIDS OVER THE COURSE OF THE YEAR. IT IS IMPORTANT TO KEEP THAT IN MIND BECAUSE EVEN THOUGH WE MIGHT ONLY HAVE 17,000 KIDS ENROLLED, ACROSS ALL THE CHARTERS AND EVERYTHING, WE PROVIDE NUTRITION SERVICE FOR MOST... PRETTY MUCH EVERY SC SCHOOL. MAINTENANCE GROUNDS. H.S A LOT OF WORK FOR CHARTER. WE REALLY SERVE THAT MANY PEOPLE. SO KIND OF GETTING DOWN INTO THE NUMBERS. IF YOU LOOK AT THE TOP ROW, THIS IS A NUMBER THAT IS TAKEN IN OCTOBER OF THIS YEAR. OCTOBER 5. IT IS WHAT THEY BASE OUR FUNDING ON. YOU CAN SEE NATOMAS UNIFIED, NOT INCLUDING GREENE. RERYE GREENE IS AN INDEPENDENT CHARTER. 11,000 STUDENTS THIS YEAR. IN OCTOBER. IF YOU ADD LEROY GREENE IN, JUST UNDER 12,000. IF YOU ADD IN THE CHARTER, IT IS 16.5. YOU HAD PRESCHOOL ON TOP OF THAT, WE GET CLOSE TO THAT 17,000 NUMBER. IF YOU LOOK AT OUR PROJECTION, WE COME IN AT 204 STUDENT GROWTH. THAT IS RIGHT IN LINE WITH THE CONSERVATIVE PROJECTION FROM THE THIRD PARTY DEMOGRAPHER. WHICH IS TYPICALLY WHERE WE LIKE TO FALL. JUST IN CASE. WE ARE ALWAYS PREPARED. IF YOU LOOK AT NATOMAS UNIFIED, INCLUDING CHARTERS, WE ARE LOOKING AT 356 KIDS FOR THE AREA. SO STILL SUBSTANTIAL GROWTH. AND LEROY GREENE IS PREDICTED TO STAY FLAT. WHICH IS WHY YOU SEE WITH LEEROY GREENE, IT IS RIGHT THERE WITH SO ASSUMPTIONS AND KNOWN FACTORS, LIKE I SAID, LEROY GREENE STAYS PRETTY FLAT. ONE THING WE HAVE LOOKED AT IS WE DID SOME DYEING IN... DIVING IN AFTER TALKING WITH CHRIS. A LOT OF THE KIDS HAVE BEEN STAYING AT AMERICAN LAKES AND JEFFERSON. WE WANTED TO SEE IF THAT WAS JUST... YOU KNOW, THAT HAPPENED BASICALLY IN THE PANDEMIC AND AFTERWARDS. WE ARE TRYING TO LAND ON IS THIS A CONSISTENT PATTERN? IT LOOKS TO BE SO. TWO RIVERS DOES FEED LEROY GREENE QUITE A BIT. THEY ARE THE BIGGEST FACTOR OF STUDENTS GOING TO LEROY GREENE. THEY ARE WORKING ON AN ENROLLMENT PUSH TO FILL SOME SPOTS. THE OTHER PIECE WAS ALREADY MENTIONED. WITH NATOMAS CHARTER, WESTLAKE, AND NP3. FOR HEREDIA-ARRIAGA SCHOOL, THEY HAVE BEEN WORK. THEY HAD FIVE TEACHERS HIRED SO FAR. WITH ONE MORE INTERNAL PERSON THAT WILL SHIFT OVER. [01:20:05] NOW THAT WE ARE GOING TO BE ADDING ANOTHER TK, WE NEED TO FIND TWO PEOPLE STILL, I BELIEVE. AT THE LAST CHECK. YUP. DAN IS GIVING ME THE YES. WE ARE WORKING ON THAT. THAT IS GREAT NEWS. A LOT OF INTEREST. ONE THING WE ARE PROPOSING TONIGHT, IS THAT FOR NEXT YEAR, TO GET US A HEAD-START, WE START LOOKING FOR FIRST-GRADE TEACHERS A YEAR EARLY. AS WE ARE ABLE TO HIRE PEOPLE, BRINGING THEM INTO THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY, GIVE THEM TIME TO PLAN, BECOME PART OF THE SCHOOL, IT HAS BEEN PRETTY BENEFICIAL. WE HAVE DONE THIS AT AMERICANLAKES WHEN WE EXPANDED. THIS HELPS TO GET EVERYTHING OFF TO A GOOD START. POTENTIALLY, IT WOULD BE GREAT TO DO THIS EVERY YEAR AS THE SCHOOL EXPANDS. IF THE BUDGET WOULD ALLOW. THAT NEEDS TO BE DETERMINED EACH YEAR AS WE GO. IT IS A VERY NICE LUXURY TO HAVE. A LOT OF SCHOOLS DON'T DO THIS. SO IT HAS BEEN SUCCESSFUL. IT IS NOT EASY FINDING TEACHERS THAT ARE BILINGUAL RIGHT NOW IN A TEACHER SHORTAGE. WITH OUR PARTNERSHIPS THAT THEY HAVE BUILT, WE HAVE HAD A GOOD START. WE WANT TO KEEP THAT GOING. ALSO, SOMETHING ELSE TO THINK ABOUT, CLASSIFIED STAFF, WE ARE OPENING A NEW SCHOOL. WE NEED NUTRITION PEOPLE. WE NEED CUSTODIANS. WE NEED SECRETARIES. LIBRARIANS. INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANTS FOR ALL THE TKS AND KINDERGARTENS. PLAYGROUND ASSISTANTS. ALL THOSE POSITIONS GO ALONG WITH OPENING A SCHOOL. THOSE ARE ALSO INCLUDED HERE TONIGHT. BACK TO TRANSITIONAL KINDERGARTEN. MOST OF THE GROWTH THIS YEAR, WE PREDICT, WILL COME WITH THE EXPANSION OF TRADITIONAL KINDERGARTEN. CALIFORNIA ROLLED OUT A PLAN. THEY WERE GOING TO ADD TWO MONTHS OF TRANSITIONAL KINDERGARTEN EVERY YEAR OVER THE COURSE OF FIVE YEARS. WE ARE NOW IN YEAR THREE OF THAT EXPANSION. YOU CAN SEE THROUGH THIS YEAR, WITH THE GREEN CHECK, TRANSITIONAL KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS NOW CAN ENROLL FROM SEPTEMBER 2. IF THEIR BIRTHDAY IS SEPTEMBER 2 TO APRIL 2. WE HAVE AN APPEALS PROCESS FOR KIDS OUTSIDE THAT WINDOW. AND THEY REACH OUT TO US. THEY DO... WE WORK THROUGH THOSE ON A CASE BY CASE BASIS. AND WE HAVE BEEN PLANNING FOR THIS FOR A LONG TIME. TRANSITIONAL KINDERGARTEN, ONE THING TO NOTE. IT IS VERY CHALLENGING. SPACE-WISE. A LOT OF DISTRICTS ARE DECLINING. THEY HAVE SPACE. AND THEY ARE USING THAT AVAILABLE SPACE TO FILL IN. IN OUR CASE, WE ARE OKAY THIS YEAR. EARLY PLANNING LOOKS LIKE WE WILL PROBABLY BE OKAY NEXT YEAR. BUT THE OUT YEARS, WE ARE STILL RIGHT NOW TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHERE DOES THE GROWTH COME, HOW MUCH GROWTH COMES, AND WHERE DO WE NEED IT. A LOT OF PLANNING GOES INTO THIS. YOU CAN SEE BY 2025, 226, ENROLLMENT YEAR, THERE WILL BE A WHOLE YEAR OF STUDENTS ENROLLING. BASICALLY, ALL FOUR-YEAR-OLDS. WILL BE ABLE TO ENROLL AT THAT POINT. . >> DOUG, THOSE ARE CLASSROOMS THAT ARE LARGER IN SIZE. NEED TO HAVE SOME IMMEDIATE ACCESS TO THE BATHROOM, IDEALLY. EVERY TEACHER WOULD LOVE TO HAVE A BATHROOM IN THE ROOM. AS YOU RUN UP AGAINST THE SPACE PROBLEM, WE MAY HAVE TO LOOK AT PORTABLES AND THEN ONE OF THE OTHER CHALLENGES IS THOSE YOUNGER STUDENTS TEND TO BE AWAY FROM WHERE THE CURRENT KK, PRE-K AND KINDER PROGRAMS ARE. FOR US, IT IS A BIGGER CHALLENGE. IF YOU TALK TO YOUR BOARD COLLEAGUES ELSEWHERE, THEY ARE, LIKE, THIS IS GREAT. IT IS REALLY WORKING OUT FOR US. THERE IS PROBABLY DECLINING ENROLLMENT. THEY HAD CLASSROOM SPACES AVAILABLE. WE HAVE A DIFFERENT, MORE EXPENSIVE CHALLENGE TO MEET THE NEEDS OF THE NEXT TWO YEARS. >> YEAH. AND ONE BY-PRODUCT OF THIS IS AS MORE KIDS ENROLL IN TRANSITIONAL FULL-DAY KINDERGARTEN, SOME OF MY COLLEAGUES IN OTHER DISTRICTS, THEY STILL HAVE HALF-DAY KINDERGARTEN PROGRAMS. WE ALREADY HAVE FULL-DAY IN KINDERGARTEN AND TK. LIKE CHRIS SAID, IT IS A CHALLENGE. IT DOES OFFER MORE OPPORTUNITY FOR PRESCHOOL STUDENTS TO ENROLL THAN IN THE PAST. >> AND OF COURSE, WE WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND GOING BACK TO HALF-DAY. >> NO. >> IT IS A FULL FACILITY SPACE. THAT WAS LONG AND HARD FOUGHT FOR. IT IS IMPORTANT TO KIDS. >> YUP. AN UPDATE ABOUT LARRY G. MEEKS ACADEMY. SO LAST YEAR, THE SECOND YEAR OF THE SCHOOL, WE WERE STILL COMING OUT OF THE PANDEMIC. ENROLLMENT WAS FLUCTUATING. WE BASE-FUNDED THE STAFF WITH 10FTE. FULL-TIME EQUIVALENT TEACHERS. TEN FTE. THEN WE SAID OKAY, WE WERE STILL NOT SURE WHAT THE ENROLLMENT WILL LOOK LIKE. FOR ONE YEAR. THAT IS THIS CURRENT YEAR. LET'S GO AHEAD AND ADD FIVE ADDITIONAL STAFF. THEN AT THIS TIME, WHICH IS NOW TODAY, WE WILL SEE WHERE WE ARE. ENROLLMENT HAS LEVELED OFF AND DROPPED BACK TO WHAT WE THINK IS MORE OF A CONSISTENT APPROACH. WE ARE PROJECTING THEM AT 235 STUDENTS FOR NEXT YEAR. EXCUSE ME. WHICH MEANS OF THE FIVE THAT WERE APPROVED LAST YEAR, WE WOULD TAKE THOSE FIVE ONE-TIME FUNDED POSITIONS AWAY. INSTEAD, WE REPLACE THEM WITH THREE ONGOING POSITIONS. [01:25:02] THEY WOULD BE SET AT 13. WE WILL DO YEAR-TO-YEAR ADJUSTMENTS. LIKE OTHER SCHOOLS GOING FORWARD. CLASS SIZE REDUCTION. I HAVE MENTIONED THIS BEFORE. SOME OF YOU HAVE HEARD ME TALK ABOUT IT. WE NEED TO MAINTAIN A TK-TO 3 CLASS SIZE AVERAGE OF 21. WE NEED TO MAINTAIN THAT. IT IS BY SCHOOL, NOT BY GRADE. IF ONE SCHOOL IS OFF, THE $3 MILLION THAT WE GET FOR THAT IS IN JEOPARDY. WE HAVE OR THE VERY CAREFUL. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO INVEST. IN THIS CASE, WE ARE ASKING FOR THREE FTE. WE HAVE DONE THIS IN THE PAST. TO GET READY WITH EARLY HIRING. TO MAKE SURE WE STAY BELOW THAT AVERAGE. WE ARE RIGHT IN THE 23 RANGE FOR PRETTY MUCH EVERY SCHOOL. BETWEEN 23 AND 24 ON AVERAGE. WHICH IS REALLY TIGHTLY STAFFED. WHICH IS VERY EFFICIENT. FISCALLY. IT IS GOOD FOR CLASS SIZE. WE ARE GETTING CLOSE. WE FILLED UP. WE HAVE BEEN GROWING. WE ARE, AGAIN, RECOMMENDING THAT FOR NEXT YEAR. AND THEN THE 204 STAFF THAT WE ARE ANTICIPATING GROWING, THAT COMES OUT TO ABOUT EIGHT FTE. LIKE I SAID, A LARGE PORTION OF THAT IS FOR TK. FIVE TEACHERS THAT WEREN'T ALREADY FUNDED FOR EXPANSION. THEN A PRESCHOOL TEACHER AND... A P.E. TEACHER IS NEEDED. THEY WILL BE SPENDING PART OF THEIR DAY AT... PART OF THEIR TIME AT HEREDIA-ARRIAGA. AND THEN DOING OTHER CLASSES AROUND THE DISTRICT. THAT IS WHAT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THE GROWTH ADJUSTMENTS. REAL QUICK. I HAVE THREE SLIDES. THE DIFFERENT ENROLLMENTS AT EACH OF THE SCHOOLS WE ARE PROJECTING. YOU WILL SEE THERE. WE DON'T HAVE THE W MASCOT READY TO GO YET. ALL THAT IS BEING WORKED ON. WE ARE PROJECTING THE ENROLLMENT AT 168 STUDENTS FOR THIS FIRST YEAR. THAT IS TK AND KINDERGARTEN ONLY FOR NEXT YEAR. WE ARE ALSO WORKING AS A SIDE NOTE, AS YOU HAVE SEEN IN COMMUNICATIONS, STAFF ARE MAKING CALLS TO FAMILIES THAT ARE ENROLLING RIGHT NOW TO FIGURE OUT IF THEY NEED TRANSPORTATION SERVICES. WE WILL BE PROVIDING TRANSPORTATION TO HEREDIA-ARRIAGA. WE WILL BE TALKING ABOUT THAT IN ABOUT A MONTH. THESE ARE THE... THESE NUMBERS TO INCLUDE PRESCHOOL. IF YOU LOOK AT OUR PK-8 SCHOOLS. ENROLLMENT SIZE. PASO VERDE AS WELL WITH SOME GROWTH. BANNON CREEK AND LARRY G. MEEKS. WE PUT A BOX AROUND THEM. THEY ARE TWO SEPARATE SCHOOLS TECHNICALLY. THEY DO SHARE A CAMPUS. WHEN YOU LOOK AT THEM COMBINED, IT IS 715 STUDENTS ENROLLED AT THAT SCHOOL. THAT PUTS THEM PRETTY MUCH IN LINE WITH THE OTHERS. NOT ALL OF THE STUDENTS ARE THERE EVERY SINGLE DAY. AND THEN LOOKING AT HOUR HIGH SCHOOLS, A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO, WE WERE TALKING ABOUT WHERE WE THOUGHT INDERKUM MIGHT END UP. WE THOUGHT AROUND 2,200 SEEMED TO BE RIGHT UNTIL ANOTHER GROWTH PIECE HITS. WE ARE PROJECTING PRETTY CLOSE TO THAT WHICH IS GOOD. THE SPACE... THAT LITTLE BIT OF SPACE THERE WOULD BE HELPFUL. YOU CAN SEE NATOMAS HIGH IS GROWING. CONTINUES TO GROW. PROGRAMS HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED AND GROWING OVER THE LAST-- GOSH, IT HAS BEEN FIVE OR SIX YEARS NOW, IT SEEMS LIKE. GOOD WORK THERE. YOU SEE THE OTHER SCHOOLS ARE PRETTY STABLE WITH THE NORMAL ENROLLMENT. AND WE HAVE COMMUNICATED THIS OUT. THIS HAS GONE OUT ALREADY IN MESSAGING. BOTH WERE CERTIFICATED AND FOR CLASSIFIED. NO PKS REDUCTIONS. NO LAWYERS. NO REDUCTIONS, ANYTHING LIKE. THAT WE ARE GROWING. WE NEED TO HEAR HIRE CLASSIFIED STAFFER TO FILL OUR SCHOOLS. WE NEED TO HIRE TEACHERS. WE WANTED TO PUT THIS UP THERE SO THERE IS NO QUESTIONS. SO ACTION TONIGHT. WE ARE ASKING THE BOARD TO TAKE ACTION TO APPROVE THE PIECES WE TALKED ABOUT. AND WITH THIS ACTION, YOU WOULD BE LOCKING IN 80% TO 85% OF THE BUDGET FOR NEXT YEAR. SO... >> QUESTIONS. >> WE WILL TALK NEXT STEPS. >> QUESTIONS? >> OH. JUST A COMMENT. WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO CLARIFY TO THE PUBLIC AND THOSE LISTENING AT HOME, THE DEFINITION OF INDEPENDENT CHARTER. >> SURE. INDEPENDENT CHARTER HAS THEIR OWN BOARD THAT OVERSEES DAY-TO-DAY OPERATIONS, MAKES DECISIONS ON HIRING, RUNNING THE SCHOOL. OUR BOARD HAS OVERSIGHT IN CAPACITIES. ANYTHING YOU WANT TO ADD, BILL? >> ALL FISCAL RUNS THROUGH THE COUNTY OFFICE FOR INDEPENDENT CHARTER. [01:30:01] >> SO LEROY GREENE? >> THAT WOULD INCLUDE NP3? >> THAT IS STILL AN INDEPENDENT CHARTER. >> OKAY. SO YEAH. ANGELA OVERSEES CHARTERS. >> YES. >> THIS IS EXTRAORDINARILY COMPLEX IN NATOMAS. TECHNICALLY, THERE IS NO LEGAL DEFINITION FOR INDEPENDENT OR DEPENDENT. >> RIGHT. >> WE MET WITH A GROUP THE OTHER DAY WHO ACTUALLY SAID, DON'T YOU JUST AUTHORIZE YOUR CHARTERS AND WALK AWAY? THAT IS WHAT MOST PEOPLE WANT TO DO. AND NO, NOT AT ALL. THERE IS VARYING DEGREES OF COMPLEXITY. ANGELA, I WILL HAND IT OVER TO YOU. >> YES. WHEN WE TALK ABOUT FUNDING CHARTERS ET EITHER DIRECTLY FUND FTHROUGH THE COUNTY OR INDIRECTY MONEY PASSES THROUGH US AS THE AUTHORIZING DISTRICT. THAT IS THE NATURAL TERM WE USE FOR CHARTERS. IN OUR CASE, WE TALK ABOUT DEPENDENT VERSUS INDEPENDENT. A DEPENDENT CHARTER DOES NOT HAVE A HIGHLY AUTONOMOUS GOVERNING BOARD. FOR EXAMPLE, LEROY GREENE, THEIR EXECUTIVE COUNCIL HAS REPRESENTATIVES FROM THE DISTRICT THAT ARE ON THE BOARD, AND ALSO SUPPORT THE DAY-TO-DAY OPERATIONS. THEY DO HAVE AGREEMENTS AND THINGS RELATED TO THE SERVICES THAT THEY USE SUCH AS H.R., SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES, MAINTENANCE, AND GROUNDS. AND THEN WESTLAKE AND NP3 ARE ALSO INDIRECTLY FUNDED, BUT WE CALL THEM INDEPENDENT CHARTERS BECAUSE THEY HAVE THEIR OWN GOVERNING BOARDS THAT SEE DAY-TO-DAY OPERATIONS AS WELL AS NATOMAS CHARTER. NATOMAS CHARTER IS DIRECTLY FUNDED THROUGH THE COUNTY. IT IS VERY COMPLEX. AND WE USE LEHMAN'S TERMS FOR THE DEPENDENT VERSUS INDEPENDENT CHARTERS. >> THANK YOU. AND THEN AFTER ACTION YOU MAY SEE OTHER BUDGET PROCESSES THAT COME UP. ACTIONS AND OTHER SUPPORTS THAT COME UP THROUGH THE BUDGET AND THE BUDGETING PROCESS THAT YOU MAY SEE ON THE SCREEN. >> FURTHER QUESTIONS? TRUSTEE MORA? >> YES. COULD YOU DEFINE THE BRIDGE STAFFING IN A LITTLE BIT MORE DEPTH? WHAT IS BRIDGE STAFFING? >> SURE. >> IN PRACTICE. >> BRIDGE STAFFING IS A TERM THAT DESCRIBES EFFORTS TO GO OUT EARLY AND HIRE STAFF, SO YOU ARE NOT WAITING UNTIL THE NEXT YEAR TO HIRE STAFF. WE WANT TO BRING IN PEOPLE EARLY, GET THEM INTO THE SCHOOL, BECOME A PART OF THE CULTURE, START PLANNING FOR THE SUBSEQUENT YEAR. A LOT OF TIMES, SCHOOLS START WITH ALL THEIR GRADES, AND YOU CAN'T DO THAT. SINCE WE ARE ROLLING THE SCHOOL UP, IT IS A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO BE ABLE TO BRING IN PEOPLE EARLY. THEY WILL WORK WITH THE PRINCIPAL. THEY CAN FILL IN AT TIMES. IF WE ARE SHORT-STAFFED. THAT HAS BEEN HEFERL, TOO. ESPECIALLY IN THE LATER YEARS WHEN WE HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH THAT. AND THEY JUST BECOME PART OF THE SCHOOL. THE KIDS GET TO KNOW THEM. THEY BECOME THE TEACHERS FOR THE NEXT YEAR. THEY ARE NOT STARTING AT THE LAST MINUTE OR IN THE SUMMER. THEY ARE STARTING AS SOON AS WE CAN HIRE THEM. REALLY. YEAH. (INAUDIBLE). >> I WOULD MOVE APPROVAL. >> SECOND. >> CASTILLO? >> AYE. >> GRANT? >> AYE. >> HARDEN? OF AYE. HEREDIA? >> AYE. >> MORA? >> AYE. QUIRALTE? >> AYE. >> THANK YOU. >> THANKS, DOUG. >> THANK YOU GUYS. >> NUMBER 23-06. [XVI.b. Ratify Bundled Agreements and Contracts for Expenditures for Academic Learning Recovery and Writing Recovery Actions Superintendent Recommends Approval Tonja Jarrell, Associate Superintendent The Board is asked to ratify bundled agreements and contracts for expenditures for academic learning recovery and writing recovery actions.] OKAY. ITEM F. RATIFY THE BUNDLE AGREEMENTS AND CONTRACTS FOR EXPENDITURES FOR ACADEMIC LEARNING, RECOVERY, AND WRITING AND RECOVERY ACTION. I ACTUALLY HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT THIS ONE. SO WHEN I WAS LOOKING AT THIS, SO I SAW-- WHAT I SAW IN HERE WAS BUDGETED WAS A LOT OF MATERIALS THAT WE NEED TO ASSIST IN THE INSTRUCTION OF READING, AND THERE WAS A LOT OF-- PLAITHRFS ALOT OF MATERIALS HERR CHRONOLOGICAL AWARENESS AND SIGHT WORDS. MY QUESTION IS THAT ALTHOUGH I DO UNDERSTAND HOW THAT IS AN IMPORTANT FOUNDATION FOR ALL READERS, I WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT WE ARE ADDRESSING THE SCIENCE OF READING. IF SOMEONE CAN TALK ABOUT THAT, I WOULD BE HAPPY TO HEAR FROM YOU. >> YEAH. I WOULD ACTUALLY LOVE TO TALK ABOUT THAT. SO PHONICS IS TRULY THE CRITICAL CORNERSTONE IN THE SCIENCE OF READING AND THE RESEARCH, AND IN NATOMAS, WE HAVE A BALANCED APPROACH TO LITERACY. AND IN A BALANCED APPROACH TO LITERACY, THERE IS EXPLICIT AND SYSTEMATIC INSTRUCTION, SO PHONICS, RIGHT? THAT IS SOUNDS REPRESENTING WORDS. IN THAT BALANCED APPROACH THAT, MEANS THAT PHONICS, AS OPPOSED TO PICTURES, FOR EXAMPLE, PHONICS IS THE MOST EFFECTIVE FOUNDATION OF TEACHING OUR STUDENTS HOW TO READ. THAT REALLY IS THE CRITICAL START IN THE SCIENCE OF READING. >> I THINK YOU SAID THAT MAGIC WORD. WHICH WAS "BALANCE." YOU KNOW, BECAUSE I THINK WHAT HAPPENS IS THIS DISTRICT WAS KNOWN FOR A GRAMMATICAL APPROACH TO LEARNING TO READ FOR A VERY, VERY, VERY LONG TIME, AND SO I WAS ALWAYS WORRIED ABOUT KIDS NOT REALLY LEARNING TO READ FOR THE LOVE OF LEARNING. YOU KNOW, THEY THOUGHT LEARNING TO READ WAS SOUNDING OUT WORDS. I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THE PUBLIC KNOWS THAT WE ARE REALLY TRYING TO OFFER THAT BALANCE SO THAT THEIR KIDS NOT ONLY GET THAT FOUNDATION BUT THEY ALSO GET A GREAT EMPHASIS ON LITERATURE, IN ADDITION. THANK YOU FOR CONFIRMING THAT. I APPRECIATE THAT. >> THANK YOU. >> SO WITH THAT, I'LL MOVE APPROVAL. OH, SORRY. >> I'LL SECOND. QUICK QUESTION. LOOKING AT THE AMOUNTS, WE PROBABLY WENT OVER THE $100,000 MARK. DO WE HAVE THE EXACT TOTAL OF HOW MUCH MONEY WE HAVE SPENT ON THISK A BADGE SO FAR? ... THIS PACKAGE SO FAR? IF YOU DON'T HAVE IT, I COULD FOLLOW UP A LITTLE BIT LATER. >> I COULD FOLLOW UP WITH YOU ON THE AMOUNT OF EACH SCHOOL AS WELL AS EACH VENDOR. >> THAT WOULD BE HELPFUL. >> I THINK IT IS FAIR THAT-- GOSH, WHEN DID WE ROLL THIS OUT? NOVEMBER? WE GAVE A COUPLE WEEKS FOR SITES TO PLAN. IT MOVED FORWARD FOR JANUARY AND FEBRUARY. IT WOULD BE GOOD TO DO A COMMUNICATION TO UPDATE THE BOARD ON WHERE WE ARE. THEY NEED TO KNOW. THANK YOU. >> ABSOLUTELY. >> THANK YOU, TRUSTEE GRANT. A MOVE BY TRUSTEE HEREDIA. SECONDED BY TRUSTEE GRANT. THE VOTE IS 6-0. [XVI.g. Select and Vote for up to Five Candidates to Serve as a Representative to the CSBA Delegate Assembly Board of Trustees The Board Board will have the opportunity to vote for up to five candidates to serve as representatives to the CSBA Delegate Assembly] [01:40:04] THE LAST ITEM IS SELECT AND VOTE FOR UP TO FIVE CANDIDATES TO SERVE AS A REPRESENTATIVE TO THE CSBA DELEGATE ASSEMBLY. DO WE HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS? I KNOW THERE ARE QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS WHOLE DELEGATE ASSEMBLY. SO IF YOU WILL INDULGE ME FOR A SECOND:LY KIND OF GO BACK AND TALK ABOUT THIS WHOLE PROCESS. SO IN THE OLD DAYS, TWO REPRESENTATIVES WERE ABLE TO SERVE ON THE DELEGATE ASSEMBLY FOR THE CALIFORNIA SCHOOL BOARD ASSOCIATION. SO THE FORMER TRUSTEE KAPLAN AND I WERE ALWAYS THE TWO, FOR A LONG TIME, THE TWO TRUSTEES. THEN THE BOARD DECIDED TO AMEND IT AND ONLY WILL ALLOW ONE TRUSTEE NOW TO SERVE FROM A BOARD. BECAUSE EACH REGION HAS SO MANY DELEGATES. SO THAT IS WHY THIS IS COMING BACK, BECAUSE ONE OF OUR TRUSTEES WAS NOMINATED HERE ON THE BALLOT. WE NEED TO VOTE TONIGHT. INITIALLY, WHEN THIS QUESTION WAS RAISED A FEW MONTHS AGO, I NOTED THAT I WAS THE TRUSTEE THAT WOULD REPRESENT THE DISTRICT BECAUSE TECHNICALLY, I AM A DELEGATE STILL. YOU GET TO BE ONE FOR LIFE IF YOU WANT TO. SO NOW IT'S EXCLUDING THAT AND HAVING ONE PERSON. EXCLUDING MYSELF SO NOW IT MAKES ROOM FOR ONE PERSON TO REPRESENT THIS DISTRICT. SO WHAT DOES THAT MEAN WHEN SOMEONE SERVES AS A DELEGATE? IT MEANS THAT THEY ATTEND SATURDAY MEETINGS ON A QUARTERLY BASIS. THEY MEET WITH OTHER PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN ELECTED BY THEIR SCHOOL BOARD. THEY COME TOGETHER, AND WE TALK ABOUT WHAT'S HAPPENING IN OUR DISTRICT. WE SHARE INFORMATION. IT IS A GREAT WAY FOR TRUST TREES TO SHARE INFORMATION. ... TRUSTEES TO SHARE INFORMATION. THEN TWICE A YEAR, THEY ATTEND A MEETING. AT THAT MEETING, THEY ARE PART OF THE GOVERNING BODY. THIS IS PROBABLY MORE THAN YOU NEED TO KNOW OR WANT TO KNOW. IT IS LIKE THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS WHICH I SERVED ON. IT IS REAL THE DELEGATES WHO HAVE THE VOTING POWER AS OPPOSED TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS. THEY ARE THE ONES THAT SET THE POLICY. AND HELP SET THE DIRECTION. THAT GIVES YOU KIND OF AN OVERVIEW. SO ON TONIGHT'S AGENDA, WE HAVE ONE CANDIDATE HERE, AND THAT IS TRUSTEE QUIRALTE. THEN WE HAVE ANOTHER CANDIDATE. SO WE CAN EITHER VOTE FOR BOTH CANDIDATES OR WE CAN VOTE FOR ONE CANDIDATE. I WILL SAY THAT I WOULD RECOMMEND THAT WE VOTE FOR BOTH CANDIDATES, ALTHOUGH YOU MAY NOT KNOW THEM, AND I'M HOPING THAT YOU WILL TRUST ME IN SAYING, YOU KNOW, WHEN I SAY THAT THEY ARE DESERVING OF THE POSITION AND THAT THEY WILL SERVE THEIR COMMUNITY AND THEY DO WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE IN TERMS OF THE WORK. IT IS ULTIMATELY UP TO THIS BOARD. YOU CAN SAY, YOU KNOW WHAT? THAT IS FINE THAT YOU SAY THAT, BUT WE WANT TO VOTE FOR ANOTHER PERSON. OPEN IT UP FOR DISCUSSION. >> I TRUST YOU. >> THANK YOU, TRUSTEE GRANT. ALL RIGHT. ANY OTHER DISCUSSION ABOUT THIS ITEM? ALL RIGHT. TRUSTEE GRANT, I'M GOING TO ASSUME THAT THAT WAS A MOTION. >> THAT IS A MOTION. >> ALL RIGHT. SECONDED BY... >> SECOND. >> BY TRUSTEE MORA. AND SO IS IT MY... WE ARE NOW VOTING ON BOTH CANDIDATES WHO ARE LISTED. SO NATALIA, CALL THE ROLL ON THIS ONE, PLEASE. >> CASTILLO? >> AYE. >> GRANT? >> AYE. >> HARDEN? AYE. >> MORA? >> YIE. QUIRALTE? >> AYE. >> MOTION CARRIES 6-0. THANK YOU. CONGRATULATIONS, TRUSTEE QUIRALTE. (APPLAUSE) WE WILL GIVE HER LOTS OF HOMEWORK. [XVII. PUBLIC COMMENTS] OKAY. NOW WE ARE MOVING ON TO PUBLIC COMMENT. AND WE HAVE ONE PUBLIC COMMENT THIS EVENING, EVERYONE. SO... [01:45:01] >> I'M VERY LOUD, SO, FIRST OF ALL, I'M GOING TO START SAYING THAT I THANK THE BOARD OR THE SUPERINTENDENT, WHOEVER IT IS THAT REINSTATED ONE TEACHER AT AMERICAN LAKES. WE HAVE STILL HAVE ONE TEACHER WHO IS NOT REINSTATED. THE ENGLISH TEACHER AT AMERICAN "LAKES. I HOPE SHE WILL GO BACK TO THE SCHOOL PRETTY SOON. I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS THE SITUATION. AS FAR AS I SPOKE WITH THE PARENTS, THE STUDENTS AT THAT PARTICULAR TEACHER... THAT PARTICULAR TEACHER HAS BEEN WONDERFUL IN THAT SCHOOL. I WILL TAKE THE PARENTS' AND STUDENTS' WORD AS IT IS. I HOPE THAT MS. CONNELLY GOES BACK TO AMERICAN LAKES. SECOND, I'M GOING TO TALK ABOUT WHAT I PRESENTED ON FEBRUARY 8. I'M TRYING TO BE VERY EXACT WITH THE DATE. WHEN I CAME TO THE LAST BOARD MEETING REGARDING THE SCHOOL CONNECTION ORGANIZATION BOARD POLICY THAT YOU GUYS HAVE. AS YOU KNOW, THE P.T. O. IS AN ESTABLISHED ORGANIZATION. WE FUNCTION OUTSIDE THE SCHOOL, BUT WE ARE STILL... WE STILL WANT TO WORK INSIDE THE SCHOOL GROUNDS. WE WANT TO BE ABLE TO HAVE THE SAME OPPORTUNITIES THAT THE GIRL SCOUT TROOP THAT MEETS EVERY MONDAY AT THE LIBRARY HAS. THEY MEET INSIDE THE SCHOOL GROUNDS. AND WE HAVE PARENTS, WE HAVE TEACHERS, WE HAVE GRANDPARENTS IN COMMUNITIES. ACTUALLY, WE HAVE ONE BOARD MEMBER HERE WHO IS A PTO MEMBER FROM AMERICAN LAKES. I WANT TO KNOW HOW OR WHEN IT IS GOING TO BE THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK WITH YOU GUYS, TO MEET WITH YOU AND TALK ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF HAVING A GOOD COLLABORATION WITH US BECAUSE WE ARE HERE IN NATOMAS. WE ARE NOT GOING ANYWHERE. THANK YOU. >> ALL RIGHT. THERE IS NO OTHER BUSINESS. I'M GOING TO ADJOURN THIS MEETING THIS EVENING AT 7:59. * This transcript was compiled from uncorrected Closed Captioning.
