WELL, PRESIDENT GRANT, TRUSTEES, SUPERINTENDENT EVANS, STAFF AND COMMUNITY, I'M HONORED TO ANNOUNCE THE DISTRICT'S RECOGNITION OF NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH WHICH OCCURS ANNUALLY TO HONOR THE CONTRIBUTIONS, HISTORY, CULTURE, AND TREMENDOUS CONCLUSIONS, IT BEGAN SEPTEMBER 15 AND RUNS THROUGH OCTOBER 15. DURING THE TIME WE'RE ENCOURAGING ALL SCHOOLS TO HOST AND PROMOTE ACTIVITIES THAT EDUCATE OUR STUDENTS, STAFF, FAMILIES AND COMMUNITY. THIS YEAR, FOR OUR DISTRICTWIDE ACTIVITIES WE WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT WE FOCUSED ON LITERACY AS PART OF THE ACTIVITIES AND RESOURCES.

SO WE ARE KICKING OFF THE MONTH WITH A TOAST OF CREATED LESSON PLAN TEXTING TEXTS FROM LATIN X. AUTHORS TO PROVIDE INSIGHT ON HISTORICAL TOPICS OF LATIN CULTURES, IN ADDITION TO THAT, WE'RE HOSTING A FAMILY FUN NIGHT ON SEPTEMBER 30TH AT BANNON CREEK SCHOOL WHICH IS A FREE EVENT FOR FAMILIES, STAFF AND THEIR FAMILIES WHO WISH TO CELEBRATE WITH US. OUR SPECIAL GUEST WILL BE LAT EASIA ORDEREZ A REPORTER WITH K.C.R.3. SHE WILL READ PARTS OF HER BOOK THE CAR SEOUL KING AND THE SPACE MISSION, EACH CHILD WILL BE GIVEN AN AUTOGRAPHED COPY OF HER BOOK AND HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO MEET HER AND TAKE A PHOTOGRAPH.

ALSO DURING FAMILY FUN NIGHT WE'LL HAVE AN ACTIVITY WHERE FAMILIES LEARN THE HISTORY OF PINATAS AND HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE THEM. WE WILL ALSO HAVE A BEAUTIFUL FOLK LOREAL DANCE THAT REFLECTS THE TRADITIONS, CULTURES ANSWER BELIEFS OF THE MEXICAN CULTURE. LASTLY WE'LL PROVIDE OUR FAMILIES WITH AN AUTHENTIC MEXICAN INSPIRED MEAL IN PARTNERSHIP WITH OUR COMMUNITY PARTNER ALGO BUENO, THERE WILL BE MANY MORE EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES CELEBRATING NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH AT OUR SCHOOLS. IT'S GREAT TO BE BACK IN THE OPEN BOARD MEETING, A YEAR AGO WE DIDN'T GET TO HAVE THAT CEREMONY SO ACKNOWLEDGING TEACHER OF THE YEAR IS ALWAYS SPECIAL. AFTER COVID WE LEARNED ESPECIALLY PARENTS AND THOSE OF US THAT BE PARENTS AND TEACHERS HOW HARD THE JOB OF TEACHING IS. SO SOMETIMES I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT WE GET TO RECOGNIZE EVERYBODY AND IMAGINE THAT FOR SOME OF THOSE TEACHERS THEY'VE GOT SOMEWHERE BETWEEN 12-40 STUDENTS IN THEIR ROOM ALL WITH DIFFERENT PERSONALITIES AND NEEDS. TEACHERS DO AMAZING WORK. AS YOU KNOW I REPRESENT ALL THE CERTIFICATED EMPLOYEES DOING THE WORK EVERYDAY BUT FOR THE CERTIFICATED AND QUALIFIED STAFF BEING NOMINATED BY THEIR PEERS, SUPPORTED BY THEIR UNIONS AND ASSOCIATIONS, I THINK IT'S A TEAM EFFORT BUT I LOVE WE'RE HIGHLIGHTING TONIGHT WONDERFUL EXAMPLES OF THE WORK BEING DONE. SORRY I HAD TO RUN IN FROM THE COOKIE TABLE. I WASN'T EATING THE COOKIES THOUGH. OKAY. WE REMEMBER THAT VIDEO MADE BEFORE COVID. IN NO TIME WAS IT MORE TRUE THAN LIVING THROUGH COVID WHERE WE'RE PUTTING STUFF TOGETHER EVERY COUPLE OF MONTHS TO KEEP GOING.

BUT I THINK WHAT I LEARNED FROM THAT EXPERIENCE IS WE SHOULD HAVE LEARNED IS THERE IS BETTER WAYS TO BUILD LASTING PROGRAMS. FEELS LIKE WE'RE BACK IN THE MENTALITY OF BUILDING AND DOING AND TRYING RAPIDLY TO MAKE UP WHAT MANY BELIEVE COVID TOOK BUT MANY OF THE ISSUES PRE-DATE THE PANDEMIC. WHILE WE MAY BE FOCUSED ON THE LITERACY PLAN RIGHT NOW, THIS COULD, WHAT I'M GOING TO TALK ABOUT TO EASILY APPLY TO OTHER AREAS.

LIKE I SAID BEFORE EDUCATORS THAT I WORKED WITH ON THIS, THEY CAN SPEAK TO YOU INDEPENDENTLY. BUT WE WORKED ON THIS TOGETHER. WHAT I SAID AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR AND NOW THE SAME. ALL OF US AS TEACHERS PROMOTE SOMETHING WE CALLED C. E. R. WHICH IS CLAIM, EVIDENCE AND REASONING WHEN WE TALK ABOUT WRITING. IN ANY SCIENCE EVER YOU GATHER EVIDENCE WITH CONTROLLED VARIABLES TO BE ABLE TO COMPARE FOR AN ACCURATE CONCLUSION.

WE HAD PROMPTS MATCHED TO THE WRONG RUBRIC AND TEACHERS DELIVERED THE WRONG ASSESSMENT FOR DIFFERENT GREAT LEVELS, WE HAD KIDS ON-LINE, OTHER KIDS WERE WORKING ON PAYABLE BECAUSE THEY DON'T HAVE ENOUGH CHROME BOOKS FOR ALL STUDENTS TO BE ON-LINE AT THE SAME TIME. EDUCATORS WERE GIVEN MATERIALS FOR THE ASSESSMENT VIA E-MAIL AFTER THEIR WEEKLY COLLABORATION WITHOUT TIME AHEAD OF TIME TO WORK ON IT TO LOOK AT IT TOGETHER AND MAKE SURE SHED THE ABILITY -- THEY HAD THE ABILITY TO NORM HOW THEY WERE GOING TO PRESENT IT TO THE CLASSROOMS. THEY WEREN'T GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO ASK QUESTIONS TO THEIR ADMINISTRATORS NOT BECAUSE THEIR ADMINISTRATORS SAIDASN'T TIME BETWEEN WHEN THE ASSESSMENT WENT OUT AND WHEN THEY HAD TO GIVE IT TO THEIR CLASSROOMS. ONE OF THE TEACHERS WHO WROTE ONE OF THE PROMPTS SHARED THEY WERE NEVER TOLD WHAT THE PROMPT WAS GOING TO BE USED FOR. IF THEY HAD KNOWN THAT THEY PROBABLY WOULD HAVE USED DIFFERENT MATERIAL.

THE OUTCOMES OF THE VARIETY OF SITUATIONS HERE DON'T REFLECT THE ABILITY OF OUR STUDENTS OR TEACHERS WHEN IT COMES TO LITERACY OR INSTRUCTION, IT'S A REFLECTION OF WHAT WE NEED TO DO INSTITUTIONALLY TO ADDRESS AND CREATE STANDARDIZED MODELS OF ASSESSMENT. WHEN THE DISTRICT ALREADY HAD AN IMPLEMENTATION CALENDAR USING THE EARLY RELEASE DAYS AND THE 1% B.D.. THEY HAD RUN A PILOT IN THE SPRING WITHOUT CONSULTATION WITH N.T.A.AND HOW THAT WOULD LOOK. SO I THINK HAD I BEEN CONSULTED ON THE FIRST ROUND OF ASSESSMENTS IT WOULD HAVE ROLLED OUT IN A MUCH DIFFERENT FASHION IN A WAY TO PROMOTE MORE INCLUESIVITY OF THE MEMBERS AND PROCESS AND PROBABLY WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR IS TRYING TO CREATE MORE BUY IN FROM TEACHERS, THE DISTRICT'S LITERACY PLAN IS CURRENTLY ILARTICULATED AND NEEDS MORE PLANNING, BUY IN AND COLLABORATION. IN PRINCIPLE IT'S EASY TO AGREE WITH THE GOAL OF INVERTED VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL ARTICULATION HOWEVER POOR IMPLEMENTATION COULD UNDERMINE THE DISTRICT'S PLAN AND LEAD TO MINIMAL COULD COMPLIANCE AND NON-TRANSFORMATIVE CHANGE.

IN THE MEAN TIME STUDENTS IN CULINARY ARTS ARE ON THE ROAD TO EXCITING COOKING ADVENTURES, STUDENTS -- [INDISCERNIBLE] I.B.PROGRAMS AWARDED I.B.DIPLOMAS FOR GRADUATES OF 2022. LAST WEEK CLUBS AND PROGRAMS -- TO THE FALL CLUB RUSH AND STUDENT HAVE -- L.G.A.STUDENTS WALKED THE RED CAR MET WHILE MUSIC WAS PLAYED IN THE BACK GROUND. L.G.A.HOSTED ASSEMBLIES WITH EVERY GRADE LEVEL. WHICH CULMINATED IN OUR FOOD TRUCK. NATOMAS HIGH IS STORING AS THEY RECOGNIZE 411 SCHOLARS FROM THE 2021-2022 SCHOOL YEAR.

THEY HAD THEIR FIRST RALLY OF THE SCHOOL YEAR, FOOTBALL TEAM, VOLLEYBALL TEAM AND CHEERLEADERS WERE RECOGNIZED. STUDENTS WERE ABLE TO GET INFORMATION ON PROGRAMS AND LEARN THEIR CAMPUS.

KIDS WERE ENGAGED.

TEACHERS WERE VERY ANIMATED. AND QUESTIONING THE STUDENTS FOCUSING ON CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS WHICH WAS VERY OBVIOUS. ALSO A LOT OF CONVERSATIONS THAT GROUPS ABOUT REALLY IMPORTANT TOPICS. SO I TALK A LOT ABOUT THE NEED FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, YOU KNOW, FOR ALL BOARD MEMBERS. AND ALSO TO REALLY UNDERSTAND WHAT IS IT THAT SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS DO? I MEAN REALLY THERE IS A LOT OF MISPERCEPTIONS ABOUT THAT. THE OTHER THING IS SO I ATTENDED TWO CONFERENCES. THERE I WAS ABLE TO STALK ABOUT SOME OF THE LEGISLATION THAT WE HAVE WORKED ON IN THE LAST YEAR.

HOW SCHOOL DISTRICTS WORK WITH COUNTY OFFICES OF EDUCATION, HOW THAT RELATIONSHIPS NEED TO BE STRENGTHENED SO THAT WE REALLY MAKE SURE WE MAXIMIZE SERVICES TO ALL OF THE STUDENTS IN OUR SCHOOLS, EITHER WHETHER IT'S DISTRICT OR THE COUNTY. AND THEN FINALLY, SO THOSE WERE A COUPLE OF CONFERENCES. THE OTHER ONE WAS THE CALIFORNIA LATINO SCHOOL BOARD ASSOCIATION WHICH AGAIN REALLY ALWAYS CONTINUALLY LOOKS AT THE DISCRETION -- DISCREPANCY IN TERMS OF GRADUATION RATES AND ALSO STANDARDIZED TESTING RATES.

WHAT CAME OUT OF BOTH OF THOSE TWO CONFERENCE, BOTH THE COUNTY AND THE CALIFORNIA LATINO ASSOCIATION SCHOOL BOARD CONFERENCE WAS THE IDEA THERE'S A LOT OF GOOD THINS HAPPENING. SCHOOL DISTRICTS ARE DOING A LOT OF GREAT THINGS, THERE IS A LOT OF KIDS SUCCEEDING AND I THINK THAT'S WAS SHOW CASED AT BOTH CONFERENCES. BUT WHAT HAPPENS IS ANY EFFORTS OF THINGS THAT ARE BEING, ANY GAINS THAT ARE BEING MADE SEEMS TO GET LOST IN THE NOISE OF THE MEDIA IN TERMS OF PEOPLE WANTING TO EFFECTUS ON WHAT THEY SAY -- FOCUS ON WHAT THEY THINK SCHOOL DISTRICTS ARE NOT DOING RIGHT. OUR JOB AS SUPERINTENDENT EVANS HAS TOLD THIS BOARD TO FOCUS ON IS TO FOCUS ON WHAT, THE THINGS WE ARE DOING WELL. SO THAT WAS THE MESSAGE.

THEN FINALLY I WAS ABLE TO GO TO ON MONDAY TO A DISTRICT. COR ONO NORCO WHICH IS IN L.A.AREA. AND SO IT'S TWO SMALL DISTRICTS PUT TOGETHER. THEIR DISTRICT OFFICE IS VERY SMALL. NOT THE DISTRICT OFFICE BUT IT'S IN A LOCATION THAT SERVES TWO DIFFERENT AREAS. THEN I WENT TO AN UNINCORPORATED AREA. SO I GOT TO SEE A BILINGUAL SCHOOL WHICH WAS K. 12 VERY EXCITING FOR ME TO SEE ALL THE LITTLE KIDS THEN THE BIG KIDS UP ON THE SECOND FLOOR. A BEAUTIFUL SCHOOL. THE SCHOOL ASK -- IS LOCATED IN AN UNINCORPORATED PART OF THE COMMUNITY AND HAS, IT'S VERY OBVIOUS THIS IS A VERY NEEDY AREA, YET THE SCHOOL IS ONE OF THE MOST COLORFUL SCHOOLS I'VE EVER VISITED. AND BEAUTIFUL, YOU KNOW, REDS AND BLUES AND TILES AND EVERYTHING. IT IS SO NICE AND INVITING. AT THE SCHOOL SITE ONE OF THE THINGS I SAW WAS THEY HAVE A BIG ROOM FOR KIDS. WHEN KIDS NEED A TIMEOUT, OR IF TEACHERS WANT TO SCHEDULE AN HOUR, THEY GO TO THE ROOM THAT IS PROBABLY THE SIZE OF THIS ROOM. IT IS, IT HAS NOTHING, IT HAS EVERYTHING WHERE KIDS CAN BE CREATIVE FOR AN HOUR. JUST KIND OF REGROUP WHICH I THOUGHT WAS REALLY POSITIVE TO GET AWAY FROM THE STRESS OF BEING A KID OR JUST THE STRESS OF THE ACADEMICS. ALSO IN THE DISTRICT I GOT TO VISIT ONE OF THEIR C.T.PROGRAMS WHERE THE KIDS LEARNED TO FLY AIRPLANES. I GOT TO TRY TO FLY ONE ON A SIMULATOR THERE. AND I, I DIDN'T DO WELL THE FIRST TIME. SECOND TIME I STARTED OUT OKAY. BUT THEN I HAD THE PLANE WAY OFF COURSE. SO I, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY IT'S NOT ONLY LEARNING TO FLY IT BUT ALL OF THE CONTROL PANELS THAT KIDS HAVE TO LEARN TO USE IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND WHAT IT TAKES TO FLY AN AIRPLANE.

AND I MEAN IT WAS REALLY WHILE IT HAD A NUMBER OF STRONG ELEMENTS OF THINGS THAT MANY THINGS WE'VE IMPLEMENTED OR THINGS THAT WOULD BE THOUGHTFUL IN A NUMBER OF PLACES, THE GENERAL IDEA WAS IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO IMPLEMENT THIS. SOMETHING WAS IMPROVED COMMUNICATION BOTH WITHIN THE DISTRICT AND WITHIN NATOMAS UNIFIED COMMUNITY.

ONE OF THE THINGS THAT CAME OUT WHEN THE NEXT 5 WAS CRAFTED FEEDBACK FROM PARENTS AND FAMILIES THEY FELT COMMUNICATION WAS ONE OF OUR STRENGTHS. FROM AN IDENTIFIED WEAKNESS AND FEEDBACK TO A STRENGTH. WE MOVED PAST THEMATIC GOALS AND CREATED ALIGNED WITH THE LCAP THE IDEA OF DISTRICT GOALS, BRAND NEW ONES NOT DESIGNED TO BE THEMATIC. THAT'S WHAT WE DID. THOSE POOR DISTRICTS THAT HAD 53-66 GOALS REALIZED VERY QUICKLY THAT WE COULDN'T GET THERE. SO I WAS VERY APPRECIATIVE OUR TRUSTEES WERE WILLING TO GO WITH THE STAFF RECOMMENDATION AND KEEP IT TO ABOUT 5. THEN WE HAD ANOTHER LOOK.

IN 2017 WE CAME BACK. SO IT MUST HAVE BEEN A 3 YEAR, INSTEAD OF 5 YEAR, MY APOLOGIES, WE ENGAGED OUR FAMILIES IN SOME STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT. I THINK THAT WAS' GETTING TO THE POINT WHERE EVERYONE WAS JUST DONE WITH 21-22 AND WANTED THE YEAR TO GO AWAY. BUT WE DID TAKE SOME WORDS THAT POPPED UP IN OTHER SURVEYS.

ONE OF THE FEEDBACK THAT WE GOT AND I THINK IT'S REALLY FAIR FEEDBACK FROM OUR PARENT GROUPS AND OTHER GROUPS THAT WE'VE BEEN MEETING WITH IS THAT THIS SURVEY WAS ENCREDIBLEY FILLED WITH EDUCATIONESE.
