GETTING A CHANCE TO GO TO THE OPEN HOUSES AND SEE THE FAMILIES, STAFF AND EVERYTHING THAT HAS BEEN PUT INTO THE CLASSROOMS. THE QUESTIONS WERE AMAZING TO SEE HOW NURTURING, COMFORTING AND ALL THE THINGS THAT YOU GUYS HAVE DONE. SO KUDOS TO ALL OF YOU AND TO SEEK THOSE FRIENDLY FACES AND FAMILIES OUT HAVING AGOOD TIME . BUT ANYWAY IT'S A GREAT ORGANIZATION BUT THEY NEEDED SOME TIME TO REORGANIZE. THEY WILL BE DOING THAT. THE OTHER THING IT THAT I'LL BE DOING AT THE END OF THE MONTH IS TRAVELING AND DOING SOME ADVOCACY WORK.

I HAD THE PLEASURE OF BEING A MOM LAST NIGHT AND IT SHOWED UP AT MY GIRLS OPEN HOUSE. YOU WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THE KIDSHADN'T SEEN EACH OTHER .T WAS A MASS GRANT PARTY MUSIC, THE KIDS WERE MORE INTERESTED IN HANGING OUT WITH EACH OTHER AND DANCING AND SHOWING US THE CLASSROOM. MY KIDS WERE LIKE YOU CAN GO OVER HERE BUT I WANT TO HANG OUT. MANY OF US PARENTS WOULD HAVE WAITED TWO HOURS FOR THE TACOS BECAUSE OUR KIDS DID NOT WANT PTO GO ANYWHERE. WE COULD STAND IN LINE AND WE WILL RUN AROUND AND DO THINGS. BUT THAT WAS GREAT BECAUSE YOU THINK ABOUT IT MY OLDEST IS 1/3 GRADER THE LAST TIME WE HAD IN PERSON OPEN HOUSE SHE WAS IN KINDERGARTEN.

SHE MISSED FIRST GRADE, SHE MISSED SECOND GRADE AND MY YOUNGEST IS IN CAN A GARDEN.

WE ARE COMING TO ASK THE BOARD TO ADOPT THE INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS THAT ARE ALIGNED TO OUR NEXT-GENERATION SCIENCE.

WE ARE ASKING FOR THE BOARD TO APPROVE THE NECESSARY FUNDING TO PURCHASE THOSE MATERIALS.

WE ARE SEEKING DIRECTION TO BE ABLE TO SIGN THE NECESSARY CONTRACTS AS WELL AS APPROVED FUNDING FOR ONGOING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TO NOT ONLY SUPPORT HOW TO USE THE MATERIALS BUT ONGOING IMPLEMENTATION IN THE YEARS AHEAD.

WE WANT TO TAKE A MINUTE TO DO AN OVERVIEW OF THE TIMELINE OF THIS WORK.

THERE ARE TWO SIDES OF THIS SLIDE ONE IS A GREAT WHAT IS A BLUE GREAT IS THE ACTION BY THE STATE. IN 2013, THE STATE ADOPTS THE NEXT GENERATION SCIENCE STANDARDS. THREE YEARS LATER THEY ADOPT THE FRAMEWORK.

THE FRAMEWORK IS WHAT TELLS US EDUCATORS HOW TO TEACH THE STANDARDS.

TWO YEARS AFTER THAT THE STATE ADOPTS THE INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS ALIGNED.

THERE IS ALSO A TOOL THAT COMES OUT THAT HELPS THE DISTRICT CALL THE TIME TOOLKIT AND HELPS DISTRICTS GO THROUGH THE PROCESS. WE BEGIN AS SOON AS THAT MATERIALS ADOPTED IN 2018 WE BEGIN OUR REVIEW PROCESS FOR ADOPTION.

WE ALL KNOW WHAT HAPPENED THAT YEAR, AS WELL. THAT WAS THAT YEAR OF THE PANDEMIC AND SCHOOL CLOSURES. WE MADE A VERY INTENTIONAL CAUSE AT THAT TIME TO STOP THE PROCESS BECAUSE WITHOUT DOING THE ADOPTION AS WELL AS HANDLING DURING THE PANDEMIC WAS TOO MUCH FOR OUR FAMILIES AND STAFF. WE CAUSED THE WORK AND THEN WHEN THE SCHOOLS REOPENED BACK IN MAY 2021 THAT IS WHAT BRINGS US HERE TODAY.

>> WE WANTED TO TAKE A MINUTE TO TALK ABOUT CHANGES TO SCIENCE INSTRUCTION.

THE PREVIOUS STANDARDS FELT HANDLED STUDENTS RECEIVING INFORMATION, READING ABOUT INFORMATION AND DOING SOME LABS IF THEY GOT TO THE UPPER GRADES IN HIGH SCHOOL AND THEN TAKING A TEST OR ANSWERING QUESTIONS. THIS IS VERY DIFFERENT. THERE ARE THREE KEY PARTS TO THE STANDARDS THAT PLAYED INTO THE TYPE OF MATERIALS WE ADOPT. YOU WILL HEAR ABOUT THREE DIMENSIONAL LEARNING. THE SCIENCE STUDENTS HAVE THREE PARTS.

FIRST IS SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING. THOSE ARE WHERE STUDENTS GET TO DO HANDS-ON OPPORTUNITIES, STEM ENTITIES, ENGINEERING OPPORTUNITIES.

NEXT IS THE DISCIPLINE AREA IS WHAT THEY ARE LEARNING. ENERGY, THOSE KEY CONTENT AREAS. THE CROSS CUTTING COMMENTS ARE ACROSS ALL SCIENCE SUBJECTS.

LOOKING AT PATTERNS, CAUSE AND EFFECT. ANOTHER KEY PIECE IS COMMON TO SCIENTISTS THEY CAN INDICATE ABOUT WHAT THEY LEARNED. WHICH BRINGS US TO STRONG CONNECTION TO OUR LITERACY WORK AND LITERACY STANDARDS. THE STANDARDS WERE DESIGNED TO HAVE A VERY STRONG OVERLAP BETWEEN LANGUAGE ARTS, MATH AND SCIENCE.

OUR YOUNGER STUDENTS CHECK WITH HER TEACHERS ABOUT THEIR LEARNING THEY DO NOT ALWAYS PROVIDE THAT IN WRITING.WE HAD ABOUT 50 TEACHERS PARTICIPATING IN PRE-PILOT ACTIVITIES AND ALSO THE ACTIVITIES THERE WERE 17 GAMES WHERE THEY GIVE THEIR HONEST FEEDBACK AND INPUT. THE TEACHERS DOING THE PILOT PROVIDED 200 PIECES OF WRITTEN FEEDBACK AFTER THEY TALK THE LESSON. ANOTHER PIECE WE DID IT WAS DIFFERENT THIS TIME AROUND IS AT KEY STAGES IN THE PROCESS WE SENT OUT AN EMAIL TO COMMUNICATE WITH EVERYONE WHETHER THEY WERE PART OF THE PILOT OR NOT WHERE WE WERE AND WHAT KEY DECISIONS WERE MADE. WE DO NOT WANT TO HAVE ANY SURPRISES AND WE WANTED TO KNOW THEIR MAIN CONCERNS ALONG THE WAY. WE HAD TEACHERS THAT WANTED TO BE PART OF THAT AND OF COURSE WE WELCOMED THEM.
