ON THE RIGHT WE SEE THERE IS REALLY THE TIMELINE.

WE THOUGHT IT WAS IMPORTANT TO PUT THIS TIMELINE IN, BECAUSE THE LANGUAGE FROM THE STATE -- FROM THE GOVERNOR IS A LITTLE CONFUSING. THE SENIOR CLASS OF 2030 WILL HAVE THIS COURSE AS A GRADUATION REQUIREMENT.

SO EVEN THOUGH DISTRICTS ARE REQUIRED TO OFFER THIS COURSE AND 25 AND 26, IT'S THE FRESHMAN CLASS OF 26 AND 27 (INDISCERNIBLE) TO BE PART OF THE FOUR-YEAR PLAN.

THE OUTLINE OF THE NUSD COURSE -- THIS IS COVERED IN GREAT DETAIL IN THE BOARD REPORT. IT REALLY FOLLOWS VERY CLOSELY THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION MODEL CURRICULUM.

THAT WAS PUBLISHED TO US IN APRIL 2021.

THE MODEL CURRICULUM ALSO GAVE US EXEMPLARS, APPROVED COURSES.

WHAT YOU WILL SEE IS THE OUTLINE OF THE NUSD COURSE.

IT'S A PILOT COURSE. RIGHT NOW IT'S AVAILABLE FOR ALL NINTH THROUGH 12TH GRADERS TO TAKE.

THERE ARE NO PREREQUISITES REQUIRED.

THAT WAS REALLY IMPORTANT THAT WE DIDN'T REQUIRE IT TO BE A SENIOR ONLY COURSE WOULD NOT HAVE A PARTICULAR SET OF ENGLISH CLASSES TO TAKE. IT'S A STANDALONE CLASS.

HAT'S PART OF THE REASON WHY WE ARE PILOTING IT AS (INAUDIBLE). AND THEN, THE YEAR-LONG LENGTH IS REALLY IMPORTANT FOR US AS A PILOT.

BECAUSE IT ALLOWS OUR TEAM TIME TO TEACH THROUGH ALL THE MODEL CURRICULUM AND GET FEEDBACK ON IT FROM FAMILIES, FROM THE COMMUNITY, AND FROM STUDENTS. SO THAT WE KNOW WHEN WE LAND ON OUR COURSE THAT WE WOULD HAVE LANDED ON THE BEST (INDISCERNIBLE). THE COURSE, LIKE I MENTIONED IS BUILT ON THE STATES MODEL CURRICULUM.

WE HAVE SOME MODIFICATIONS (INAUDIBLE) BASED ON THE FEEDBACK (INDISCERNIBLE) STAFF, COMMUNITY AND STUDENTS.

THE CURRICULUM AND RESOURCES -- WE ARE USING THE STATE MODEL RESOURCES FROM A VERY DIVERSE TEAM ACROSS THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA TO PUT THAT CURRICULUM TOGETHER.

WITH THAT INPUT, THE READER WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE SO THE COMMUNITY CAN HAVE OPPORTUNITIES TO VIEW THAT READER BEFORE WE USE IT IN CLASS IN THE FALL.

FINALLY, WE WILL BE APPLYING FOR UC/CSU CREDIT UNDER COURSE G ELECTIVE. THE FOLLOWING UNDER THE STATE APPROVED (INAUDIBLE) IS IMPORTANT FOR US.

WE DID A COURSE REVIEW BY TALKING WITH OTHER DISTRICTS -- UNIVERSITY PROVIDERS AND ORGANIZATIONS. THE MATERIAL REVIEW WAS REALLY EXPENSIVE. AND I THINK WHAT OUR FAMILIES AND FACULTY AND STUDENTS WILL FIND IS THAT THE MATERIALS THAT WE ARE USING FOR THE PILOT ARE LARGELY INFORMATIONAL.

THAT'S GONNA BE REALLY CRITICAL TO SUPPORT OUR DISTRICT LITERACY PLAN. SO (INDISCERNIBLE) READING AND WRITING IS GOING TO BE A VERY IMPORTANT PIECE OF THIS COURSE ALONG WITH RESEARCH METHODS. FINALLY, WE HAVE REACHED OUT AND CONTINUE TO PARTNER WITH OUR PARTNERS -- BOTH THE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT AND (INAUDIBLE) AS WELL AS UC DAVIS. THAT'S PART OF OUR BENCHMARKING. IN THIS PILOT, WHAT WE KNOW IS THAT USING THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION'S CURRICULUM IN THE PILOT IS GOING TO ALLOW US TO TEACH THE COURSE WHILE REMAINING RESPONSIVE TO STUDENT NEEDS IN THE LOCAL CONTEXT.

AND THEN, CHANGE, POTENTIALLY OUR RESOURCES BASED ON THAT FEEDBACK . I THINK SOMETHING THAT IS REALLY IMPORTANT IN OUR BENCHMARKING, TOO, IS THE TEXT THAT MOST DISTRICTS ARE USING -- ONE WAS OFFERED IN 2008, AND IT WAS HIGHLY NARRATIVE. WE KNOW WE ARE COMMITTED TO INFORMATIONAL READING AND WRITING.

FOR THE PAST FIVE YEARS I HAVE BEEN THE LEAD LEARNER AND LEAD FACILITATOR TO MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOLS YOUNG PEOPLE OF SOUTH NATOMAS. IN RESPONDING TO THE LEARNING NEEDS OF OUR YOUNG PEOPLE. SPECIFICALLY DURING THESE LAST FEW YEARS WHICH HAVE BEEN THE MOST CHANGELING YEARS I'VE EVER DONE IN MY EIGHT YEARS OF TEACHING.

(INDISCERNIBLE) SUCH AS EQUALITY AND JUSTICE HAS ALLOWED STUDENTS TO USE CRITICAL THINKING AND HAS PROMOTED AN UNDERSTANDING OF HOW DIFFERENT GROUPS HAVE STRUGGLED AND WORKED TOGETHER. IN DOING SO, THESE LAST FEW YEARS, I HAVE FOUND THESE TOPICS HAVE THE POWER TO CREATING LIBERATING AND TRANSFORMING EXPERIENCES THAT ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO SHOW UP FOR EACH OTHER AND THEIR COMMUNITIES. THE SENSE OF COMMUNITY AMONG MY CLASS IS SPECIAL AND I'D LIKE TO THANK THEM FOR CHALLENGING ME AND ALLOWING ME TO SEE THEIR HUMANITY THROUGH THE EXPLORATION OF COUNTER NARRATIVES.

IF YOU NOTE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE TWO, WE HAVE INTERVENTIONS, LEARNING RECOVERY, AND ALL OF THOSE THINGS THAT OUR AMAZING TEACHERS DO FOR OUR STUDENTS. BUT UNFORTUNATELY, STUDENT A WAS UNABLE TO PARTICIPATE. SO FOR STUDENT B AT THIS TIME -- WE'RE STILL AN IEP MEETING. WE REVIEWED THOSE PARENTAL RIGHTS. WE LOOKED AT THOSE TEST SCORES.

PARENTAL IMPORT, TEACHER INPUT. WE DETERMINED THAT STUDENT B IS ELIGIBLE FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION. NOW WE LOOK AT NEXT STEPS IN THE IEP MEETING. STUDENT B IS ELIGIBLE -- SLD.

THE IEP. IT'S UP TO THE IEP TO DEVELOP GOALS AND ACCOMMODATIONS FOR THE STUDENT BASED ON THEIR IEP.

(INDISCERNIBLE) (INAUDIBLE) IT'S UP TO THE IEP WHAT CONSTITUTES (INAUDIBLE). IN YOUR BOARD REPORT, ON PAGES THREE AND SIX I GO INTO GREAT DETAIL (INAUDIBLE).

STUDENTS HE COULD HAVE A DIFFERENT DISABILITY IN ONE OF THE OTHER 13 AREAS, AND THEIR IEPMIGHT LOOK COMPLETELY DIFFERENT . SO THE PATHWAY FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION IS OFTENTIMES VERY CONFUSING.

IT'S CONFUSING FOR ALL OF US. PARENTS MAY SEE SERVICES AND GET EXCITED THAT WE OFFER THESE INTERVENTION SERVICES.

I THINK IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT SPECIAL EDUCATION IS NOT ABOUT OVERALL INTERVENTION.

IT'S ABOUT TARGETED INTERVENTION FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITY THAT WE FOCUS ON THOSE DEFICIT AREAS.

DUE TO ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS, SPECIAL EDUCATION IS NOT NECESSARILY THE MOSTAPPROPRIATE PLACEMENT AND STUDENTS (INDISCERNIBLE) . FAMILIES ARE THE KEY, EDUCATION IS THE KEY (INDISCERNIBLE) (INAUDIBLE).

WE HAVE NUMEROUS PARENTAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES.
