Approve Resolution No. 20-41 Regarding Support to Return NUSD’s Homeless Students On Track for Student Learning During These Unprecedented Times] THE ACTION ITEM BEFORE US. MEMBERS IS APPROVAL OF RESOLUTION 20 Ã41 REGARDING SUPPORT TO RETURN NATOMAS UNIFIED HOMELESS STUDENTS ON TRACK FOR STUDENT LEARNING DURING THESE UNPRECEDENTED TIMES. SUPERINTENDENT EVANS? >> YES. SO LAST THURSDAY CAROL SWANSON AND I HAD A REGULARLY SCHEDULED AND HER TEAM. APPROVED HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DIG INTO THE CHALLENGES OUR STUDENTS FACE YOUNG THE ACADEMIC SIDE. THEY ARE TRYING TO GET AT THE ROOT CAUSES FOR WHAT SOME OF LEARNING CHALLENGES ARE FOR OUR STUDENTS. THIS ONE WAS SO OBVIOUS. AND SO NECESSARY TO ACT ON QUICKLY. WE FOUND OUT FROM OUR STAFF THAT 25 FAMILIES IN NATOMAS UNIFIED OR UNSHELTERED WERE IN AND OUT OF HOTELS AND MOTELS BASED ON FINANCIAL SITUATION DAY TODAY. INNOCENCE IT MEANS THAT 25 FAMILIES ARE IN MOST NIGHTS AND THE SLEEPING IN THE COLD IN THEIR CARS AND/OR OUT UNDER THE STARS. AS IS FAMILIES ARE GRAPPLING WITH THE FUNDAMENTAL NEEDS FOR THEIR STUDENTS AND THEMSELVES. FOOD AND SHELTER, WE COULD EASILY SEE THE RESULTS THAT SHOWED MOST OF OUR HOMELESS STUDENTS IN THIS CATEGORY, UNSHELTERED, OR CHRONICALLY ABSENT. WHICH IS A STATE REQUIREMENT FOR US TO SERVE OUR HOMELESS STUDENTS AND ADDRESS CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM. WE KNOW THERE ISN'T MUCH WE CAN DO UNLESS WE INTERVENED AND TRIED TO GET OUT THE ROOT CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM, WHICH IS UNSHELTERED HOMELESSNESS. YOU CAN'T CHARGE A CHROME BOOK IF YOU DON'T HAVE A PLUG, IF YOU DON'T HAVE A CHARGER TO PLUG YOUR COMPUTER INTO.AN'T CHARGE WI-FI AND GET ANY WI-FI. TO GET CHARGER BOX. AND THEREFORE A STUDENTS ARE NOT ENGAGING IN DISTRICT LEARNING TO A HIGH DEGREE. THE MAJORITY. AND EVEN THE VAST MAJORITY OF STUDENTS OR CHRONICALLY ABSENT IN THE LEARNING. WE DECIDED IT WOULD BE IMPORTANT TO WORK WITH OUR COMMUNITY AND FIGURE OUT A THREE-PRONGED APPROACH. FROM THAT THREE-PRONGED APPROACH WE WERE ABLE TO WORK WITH NATOMAS SCHOOL FOUNDATION AND THEIR LEADERS. AND CREATED GO FUND ME CAMPAIGN IN OVER A DAY NOW HAS $10,000. JUST OVER A DAY TO THOUSAND DOLLARS IN IT ONE OF THE CHALLENGES IS THAT THE MONEY WON'T BE AVAILABLE UNTIL LATE JANUARY.OF COURSE WE ARE WORKING WITH STATE AND LOCAL AGENCIES SEE THEIR OPENING SOME [00:05:04] ADORNING STATIONS AND DOING THINGS IF THERE WAS AN IMMEDIATE FIX, A NUMBER OF OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS AND COLLEAGUES WOULD'VE TAKEN THE IMMEDIATE FIX IS ALREADY WE WOULDN'T BE DISCUSSING THIS TODAY. WE ARE CONTINUING TO WORK WITH STATE AND LOCAL LEADERS AND AGENCIES TO FIGURE OUT WHAT COULD BE LONGER TERM SOLUTIONS. WHAT WE ARE ASKING FOR THE BOARD ACTION ON THE RESOLUTION THAT WOULD SHELTER STUDENTS AND FAMILIES OVER THE HOLIDAYS AND AT THE START THE FIRST TWO WEEKS OF THE SCHOOL YEAR THAT WOULD ALLOW OUR STUENTS TO RETURN VIRTUAL LEARNING JANUARY 4 DECREASE CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM. AND WHEN THE GO FUNDING MONEY KICKS IN, THROUGH FEBRUARY 1 WE GET THE 30,000 WE CAN TO ALLOW US TO FIGURE OUT WHAT OTHER OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE AT THE STATE AND LOCAL AGENCIES. IT'S A THREE-PART PROCESS. WHEN THERE HAVE BEEN CRISIS THESE, DEATHS, CERTAIN ISSUES. YOU SEE THE NATOMAS COMMUNITY COME OUT. IN SUPPORT THE NEIGHBORS. YOU CAN TELL BY $10,000 IN OVER A DAY THAT OUR COMMUNITIES ARE ALREADY RESPONDING.TAFF MEMBERS, COMMUNITY MEMBERS, ALUMNI. YOU CAN SEE THEIR NAMES FOR THE DOLLAR AMOUNT DONATIONS AND THEY REALLY WANT HELP. THE ASKING THE BOARD TAKE ACTION ON THE RESOLUTION THAT WOULD ALLOW US IN THE UNPRECEDENTED TIMES BECAUSE OF THE PANDEMIC THIS IS NOT SOMETHING WE RECOMMEND APPROACH OR DO. BECAUSE OF THE PANDEMIC A LOT OF FOLKS ARE HAVING A HARD TIME MOVING IN WITH OTHER FRIENDS OR FAMILY WE HAVE MANY MORE THAT ARE COMMIT 300 MORE OR SO IS ABOUT THE NUMBER. THEY DON'T HAVE A HOME OF THEIR OWN, BUT THEY MOVED IN WITH FRIENDS OR FAMILY TEMPORARILY AND THEY HAVE SHELTER. THESE ARE THE ONES MOST EXTREME AND DON'T HAVE THE SHELTER. AND BECAUSE THE PANDEMIC IN THESE EXTRAORDINARY TIMES, WE ARE ASKING THE BOARD TO STEP IN AND HELP THEM GET BACK ON THEIR FEET TO OUR STUDENTS CAN GET BACK TO LEARNING. >>LISA KAPLAN: THANK YOU SUPERINTENDENT EVANS. JUST KNOW THAT THESE ARE FAMILIES WHO HAVE LOST JOBS, CAN'T GET JOBS, THEY HAD KIDS SLEEPING IN CARS. A CHILD CANNOT LEARN UNLESS THEY ARE WARM, THEY ARE FED AND THEY FEEL SOME SHELTER. AND WE HAVE AN OBLIGATION AS A SOCIETY IN A SCHOOL DISTRICT AND WE ARE UNDER LEGAL OBLIGATION AND FEDERAL OBLIGATION TO EDUCATE AND GIVEN APPROPRIATE EDUCATION TO OUR HOMELESS CHILDREN. THEY CANNOT LEARN UNLESS THEY HAVE THAT SHELTER OR THAT FOOD IN OURNUTRITION SERVICES IS THERE . THIS IS NEAR AND DEAR TO MY HEART. AND SO I HOPE AS WE HAVE ALWAYS COME TOGETHER AS A FAMILY, THIS IS SOMETHING TRUSTEES WOULD BE WILLING TO SUPPORT AND USE OUR FUNDING TO ADDRESS THE CHRONIC ABSENTEE IN HOMELESSNESS ISSUE AMONGST OUR MOST NEEDY STUDENT. AS WELL AS ASKING OUR COMMUNITY TO SUPPORT THAT. AND SO MANY COMMENTS OR DO I HAVE A MOTION? >> MOVE APPROVAL. >>LISA KAPLAN: MOVED BY TRUSTEE HARDEN. SECOND BY TRUSTEE HARDEN. ROLL CALL.RUSTEE BAINES. >> AYE . WITH A BIG THANK YOU TO SUPERINTENDENT EVANS AND EVERYBODY ELSE. >>LISA KAPLAN: THANK YOU. TRUSTEE GRANT. >> AYE. >>LISA KAPLAN: TRUSTEE HARDEN BOY AYE. >>LISA KAPLAN: TRUSTEE HEREDIA. >> AYE. >>SCOTT DOSICK : >>LISA KAPLAN: TRUSTEE KAPLAN AYE . THANK YOU. MOTION PASSES. TRULY APPRECIATE IT. 5/0. >> I'M SO SORRY. I WANT TO NOTE FOR THE RECORD WE DID NOT RECEIVE ANY PUBLIC COMMENT WITH A ACTION ITEM ON THE BOARD MEETING TONIGHT. >>LISA KAPLAN: CORRECT. THERE WERE NO PUBLIC COMMENTS ON THE ITEM. THANK YOU FOR THE RECORD.F WE DO RECEIVE ANY TONIGHT, WE WILL MAKE SURE THEY ARE REFLECTED IN THE MINUTES. AS ALWAYS IF THERE WAS ANY LAST-MINUTE COMMENTS THAT CAME THROUGH DURING THE BOARD MEETINGS THEY WILL ALWAYS BE REFLECTED IN THE MINUTES. AND SO AT 8:09 PM I CALL OUR SPECIAL BOARD MEETING ADJOURNED.
